Xers***FRIDAY (finally)****

katie- The 1800 freaked me out too! With the muscle building I found that I needed pretty darn near 1800 to actually feel stong enough to lift heavy... The GREAT news is that after a few weeks you see how much clean food you can eat and still get the results you want. The book also says that 1800 will not be right for everyone. I started increasing cals gradually in phase 1. I usually added an extra couple of ounces of protein in Am & Mid day meals... Protein / Recovery shakes are also good for adding calories (right after workout). If you are a 1400 dayer now just add 100-200 a day for weeks 1 & 2. Dont freak at scale... New muscle growth will generally make you look & feel bulky for just a bit but that starts to decrease as your body becomes healthier. The muscle growth is what finally gave me freedom from 6 days a week of 1-2hr cardios. My body LOVES muscle to burn fat.... Others will have their experience to share. My best advise is to do what you can with the food plan- its strict... be aware of nutrient & %'s (sparkspeople.com makes it easy & free to track that)- then stick with it all. Magic happens in phases 2 & 3 for most people.

Katie,

About time it arrived! Dh and I are doing the classic version. I'm so very tempted to add an hour of steady state cardio in week 5 though. I'm not a nutritionist. I eat around 1400 to 1500 calories a day. I think you can balance your portions within that range. Not saying that I do though. ;-) If you feel like you don't have enough energy, increase your calories by 200 and see if that helps. They discuss portions and calories amounts in the book.

Debra: Speed read. It's a boring book!

Traci-X and Lea: Thanks for the compliments on my writing. I cringe whenever I read my posts, especially after reading "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White. Professor Strunk loved the beauty of brevity! Sorry, Traci-X after my kids are grown, I'll be too busy to write a novel. I'll be visiting each of them on their own respective continents. My oldest has dibs on Europe. ;-)

Oooo, Look! Dh came home with a peace offering in hand. He brought me a large coffee with extra cream. You can count on him telling me that I'm already sweet enough! LOL

Wendy

I'm a pro at tracking my calories and food ratio's. I do the BFFM ratios of 50% carb, 30% protein, 20% fat. I'm just trying to figure out how I'm going to eat 5 portions of protein a day and only 1 portion of carbs. I also don't really understand how you can come out with a 30% carb ratio when you're only eating 1 portion a day. I am so going to miss my Flaxseed cereal and Shredded Wheat in the morning.

Katie

Hello again everyone,

Man you all have been very chatty today. :) You know how hard it is for me to keep up.:( I just finished my workout and now I want some food. Thinking of getting myself some cottage cheese and strawberries. :9

Traci, Congrats on the AFPA Certification.

I'm starving, and I hate this keyboard at home!!!!!! BBL

Laurie

Okay..I'm back again...still putting off my workout...Not feeling all that great today...ttom is here...not that it's bad for me but I always feel lethargic. And I'm feeling a little bloated, too, just because I was a great big fat pig at lunch.

Katie...Try to get you calorie intake up a bit. You will need it for these workouts. Your body will go into starvation mode and you will not see the results you want. You need all that protein to gain muscle. I don't remember what the ratios are...but it may have been talking about later eating phases, since more carbs are added later. Also...keep in mind, if you are feeling too energy sapped by limiting your carbs in phase one you should just go on to phase 2...even Tony says so.

Wendy...Your poor pup! I hope she is feeling better..I hope your DH is also making it up to her...what did she get from him? Glad you twins seem to be catching up...I just THOUGHT I had a nightmare pregnancy...yours was much worse! You are so lucky that everything has turned out well for you guys, and you little ones too, of course.

Traci...Tell your DH to get a universal remote and have it programed for all of those crazy remotes so that you don't have to have them scattered all over the place...Crazy man! Those DHs get so excited about their toys! And no, my fish tacos were not homemade, but it would be easy to do. Also...I did not get close enough to the Easter Bunny to rub his ears...there was a 2 hour wait!!!! I no bunny is worth 2 hours. People were in line before the mall even opened today. We rode the carousel instead.

And Sandra...Forgot about your question about sushi...If you are not a big fish fan I would be surprised if you liked raw fish...but that being said...don't get it at the grocery store...you must go to a nice sushi restaurant...even if you just want to try it...Also...I promise to be back with berry crumbles later.

Is that it for now? I guess I actually have to go hit play. Bye.

Debra

Hi all,

Upper body done, and some pull/chin ups added in. I am happy to say that I haven't lost any upper body strength. All of the pushups have really tightened my core and I haven't done any other core work in 3 weeks. Plus I've probably lost a couple of pounds, not intentionally though. Is anyone familiar with the fine tune of the zip and hollow pilates ab move? I found it while looking for back info and it has made a huge difference in my ab control. It helped me to really activate my lower abs, the transverse ones, and not use the ones on the sides to control the lower ab pouch.

Jeanette – Well, I was up for at least an hour last night and couldn’t sleep. I didn’t get up because my back is really stiff in the morning. My son started with a Suzuki Samari and it has lockers and all sorts of modifications on it. He has now fabbed a new frame for a rock crawler. He is about ¾ finished. Unfortunately, we live in the wrong part of the country. Good luck on your entertaining tomorrow.

Laurie – You did good at Mickey D’s. About two years ago, my kids gave up fast food, so I don’t have to deal with that anymore. How is the doubles going? L & B and a run is pretty intense.

Monica – I hurt my back from lifting and over use; probably too heavy of weights too often. I am slowly getting better, but it is slow. I had some issues with my Achilles a while ago because I was pushing too hard with the yoga. I was trying to stop checking in at work too. Now I go to the page, copy all of the posts, paste them to a word document, and then sign off quick. Then I can read them without actually being online.

Sandra – Sounds like an intense workout! The references are really a no brainer, but time consuming and a pain in the A$$. Do you make your lentil and bean cakes? I thought about making black bean cakes, but never have. Glad your eating plan is working. I'm sure you are feeling good about that.

Debra – Thanks for the well wishes. I think that herniated discs are fairly common. According to the internet, about 50% of people have had herniated discs. Some never know it, but in others like me it irritates the sciatic nerve, and sometimes the piriformis muscle, and causes severe pain down the leg cramping and shortening all of the muscles in the glute, hamstring, and calf. Recovery is 4-8 – 10 weeks. It’s definitely getting better. I can actually sit on the floor with my legs straight out. Stretching and light aerobic activity are suggested. Sorry about the Easter Bunny. It's amazing what people will wait in line for and how long. Luckily you were able to find an acceptable alternate.

Wendy – We’ve had dogs at our house get locked into the garage for the night. It’s not as cold as outside, but they are devastated. Sorry about the dog incident. If dogs aren’t used to kids, they sometimes feel threatened by them. I have a Doberman that I can’t trust around many people of any age.

Traci – My SIL was commenting on how miserable the remote /tv/ situation was at her house and that there are at least 5 remotes on the coffee table. Her friend came over and saw them all and just said, “I’m sorry.” As much as the tivo was a nightmare for us to set up, are dish wouldn’t take a splitter, it really is great to have. Congratulations again!

Katie – So happy that you got your DVDs. I did the classic, and only loosely did the eating plan. Mainly I cut carbs and increased my protein intake. I was eating 3-400 more calories than usual and actually lost. I think that you get quite a few hidden carbs in foods other than those actually listed as carbs like the bars etc.

Deb – How was the yoga and L&B?

Steph - Check in when you can.

Tracy

How many of you used their supplements (bars, recovery drink, vitamins)? I was skeptical at first at the work "supplements", but I already drink protein shakes and eat protein bars. Can I substitute mine or should I invest in theirs?

Gee, is it still only Friday? It feels like a Sunday at my house.

TraciX - first things first: Your news is very exciting! I'm so happy for you, envious of you, proud of you, and have complete confidence that you will get your certification without a hitch, because you love the topic so much. I can't think of a job with a better fit for you. This is a big step, and of course there's always the chance that you'll "fail", but there's also a chance that you'll get hit by a car the next time you go outside. In other words, everything has a potential downside; just don't look down, and you'll be all right!

I cracked up when I read about your Magically Hips experience. Here you are talking about sweet nectar and hip juice, getting all excited, then I unintentionally make suggestive remarks about shaving peach fuzz, and then I was in tears from laughing. We're weird.

Nope, I never mentioned the eye fungus. Actually, it's just a small rashy patch beside my right eye, not actually in it. Like I said, the cream is working. It took me 3 months to finally realize it wasn't going to go away on it's own. I know, I'm a dufus. Nope, don't know how we survived on so little before. Maybe because I compensated by snacking and nibbling all day long, then overstuffing on occaision. Terrible. You're too sweet about your "world needs more moms like you" talk. Save it for Mother's Day, please, because no one around here will think to say things like that :) I can't imagine your frustration about the high-tech gadgetry required to turn on the tv. I guess your motto needs to be "Just keep pushing Button A, B,C, dial N, wait 15 seconds, call the DH, then press play!"

TracyX - So glad you're still getting in your push ups. I can always count on you for a good pump! Enjoy your sweet nectar hip juice, or whatever the heck TraciX was talking about.

DebraX - GS BSB is fabulous! I really like the music during the rows at the start. Enjoy! Nothing I'm eating this weekend will fit into my "healthy eating lifestyle", so what's one more thing? At least I'm not making cheesecake <casting a glance your way, Wendy!>. That's HILARIOUS about your former neighbours!! Did it make you and DH a little self-conscious??

Wendy - Anne of GG was (still is) one of my FAVOURITE books of my childhood. Just love, love, love those stories. Yup, I understand what you mean about developmental delay due to their premature birth. Makes perfect sense. So glad that they're healthy and doing well. DH's grandmother delivered identical twin girls - 8 lbs each!! Big babies run in his family. Can't imagine carrying 16lbs of baby, though! Very scary story about the dog! I'm glad the owner finally saved you.

Katie - YAY!!! You got it!!! I'm sure many people suddenly find themselves sick on the day their P90X arrives ;) I did the Classic, and the portion eating plan. Yes, the eating plan is rather finicky. Based on how you're eating now, would the changes be substantial? Oh, and DO NOT FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO DO THE PHASE ONE LOW-CARB PLAN!!! If you ever watch the "behind the scenes" of the Making of the X, the nutritionist clearly states that the reason for the low-carb phase is simply to create a sudden weight loss for people, to make it appear that the program is working! She felt it would be motivating. There is no solid basis for doing the low-carb phase, in terms of growing muscle. And apparently you lose weight quickly because without the carbs in your system, your body drops water. So, you're not even losing fat. The scale goes down, but not for the reason you want it to. They also encourage you to increase your carbs in the next 2 phases, because it's what your body needs when you're so active. So, if you're not comfortable with it DON'T DO IT! Eat healthy, clean, and get upwards of 1800 calories a day. You need the calories to grow muscle. You really do. They don't grow on air; they need fuel. Traci's advice about gradually increasing is excellent.

The Neglectful Mother Strikes Again. Went out for my run this morning. The temperature was a low -7C, with a *strong* wind blowing at a nasty -15C. Brrr. Loved the run. The wind made me run faster. Got home 30 mins later to learn that the baby had decided to follow me out the door - and neither DD nor DH noticed, until she walked back in again!!! DH said she wasn't very cold when she came in, so probably wasn't out there long. But jeepers! Why doesn't anyone around here ever pay attention to this child?? How come you guys haven't called the authorities yet? Can't you see this baby needs rescuing?!?

After my lovely run I did the Butts 'n Guts Leg Blast premix, and interspersed the Legs & Back pull/chin ups. AWESOME! Great workout! I always do best with the pull/chin ups on Fridays, I guess because my other upper body parts aren't already fatigued. I finished with the BG weighted core work, and stretch. OUCHA! Yes, I'm already feeling it. I feel worked from head to toe. Not sure what kind of workout I'll be capable of doing tomorrow. I was planning on Saffel's StrikeZone, but think the drills at the end might be too much for my poor tushy.

Okay, I've got to get some groceries for all this eating we're doing this weekend. Cheers,
SandraX
- still feeling all smiley inside from Traci's news

Sandra - Where did you see that behind the scenes footage? Is that really why they have you drop your carb intake? Wow. I know that Tony says to go to Phase 2 at any time if Phase 1 leaves you feeling energy drained. I just wonder if I'll get results as good if I stick to my BFFM eating plan vs. the X eating plan. I have been doing BFFM for awhile now and it really seems to agree with me, but at the same time I want to maximize my results from this program. I'm kind of torn.

Katie

The behind the scenes footage is fascinating. Ages ago a former check in member found a link to it. Frankly, I don't know how to find it from their website. It is extremely long, with tons of video clips that were filmed as they went through the whole process of making the series: from the conception of the idea to the finished product. It takes at least an hour to watch and read it all. But it's fascinating, as I already said. Hopefully someone can find the link again. I'll try to find it if I have a chance.

We discussed the need to follow the diet quite extensively as we went through Round One. Everyone had to kind of struggle to find what worked for them. One thing we sort of agreed on was that BeachBody created this complicated eating plan as strictly as it's written, so that if people complain about not seeing results, BB can claim they didn't follow the eating plan close enough. This is only our cynical opinions coming through.

As I said before, I followed it almost to the letter for Phase 1. I did indeed drop a few pounds, but started off the first few days STARVING, despite my daily calories having gone UP. By the end of the first month I was not feeling very energetic, and it was Christmas. With no latitude to adjust to the holiday season, I blew it big time for a week and gave up on it altogether for phases 2 and 3.

This time, I'm just sticking with eating 1800 "clean" calories a day; that includes a comfortable level of carbs. I think you should stick with the BFFM program, if you are already comfortable with that. I'm not familiar with it, so can't comment on how it differs from the X plan. The X plan, Phase 2, is actually very well balanced and more typical for a well-rounded eating plan. I'm probably eating very much like that right now.

Tosca Reno put out a book in January called "The Clean Eating Diet" or something like that. Many of us bought it. If you follow her loose guidelines on how to eat, it shakes out very much like the X plan, Phase 2.

Essentially, IMO, if you eat healthy and frequently, and you will do just fine.

Sandra

Report Card for Day:
Completed yesterdays Yoga & ARX (with additional abs )
Completed Todays Legs & back + Viper Modified to suit my mood (65 minutes) ...... OUCHA already just like Sandra X! Feel very good- I took it all in phases and ate fairly properly today so I actually feel pretty darn good for 6pm (AKA: Bedtime;-) ) All you NEW Xers please take note- DO NOT MISS A DAY OF X or there are penalties! }(

DH & I made up after he had a minir accident this afternoon... Was taking the riding mower to his moms when it fell out the back of his truck just before getting on the freeway! I was so freaked out when he drug he tar & oiled body in the door that I just melted into tears and made him his favorite meal. Thank God he and no one else were hurt.... We live in the 4th largest city in the country so the odds of causing an accident/death were very high...I told him his angels were with him today.

I need to go eat as I'm starvin' marvin .... If DH stays asleep in chair I shall return with all the responses to all your personals that are so inspirational & motivation for me. I just adore you dear ladies....and ya 'll make me laugh every single day!

One quickie for Katie: If BFL eating is good for your body I say STICK WITH IT! Its a very healthy plan and I love all their recipes! Just do that and make sure you get you increased protein. You'll be just fine.... I really think lack of success has more to do with brownies, chocolate cake, choc easter eggs... You get my drift! :7

Thanks Sandra. Basically I eat clean foods at a 50% carb, 30% protein and 20% fat ratio. I eat 5 to 6 small meals a day and when following it strictly, allow myself 1 cheat meal every one to two weeks (Tom Venuto actually recommends 1 to 2 cheat meals a week to keep yourself from feeling deprived, as long as you eat it in moderation) where I eat WHATEVER I want. It worked well for me while doing Cathe. I want to stick to the plan to see if I can get the results I'm looking for, but at the same time I know that if I restrict myself TOO much I might snap and binge. This is something I know very well about myself. I also hate to think that for the next 90 days I can't have a glass of wine every now and again. I think I'll just have to take it one day at a time and see what happens.
Thanks for all your help Sandra! I'm afraid that I'll be asking for a lot of advice during this process.

You can now officially call me "Katie X" :7

Sandra..OMG...your poor child..Hopefully your neighbors haven't called child services on you guys yet! I'm surprised you DH even told you about it when you got home...mine would have left out that little tidbit when I returned!

Okay...on to the crumble...

4 cups of berries (fresh or frozen)
1/2 cup of sugar
juice of 1 lemon
2 tbsp of flour + 1/2 cup of flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 stick cold butter

Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Combine berries, plain sugar, lemon juice with 2 tbsp of flour and pour into a deep dish pie plate.

Blend 1/2 cup of flour, brown sugar and butter. It should resemble pea sized crumbs when done. Sprinkle over berry mixture.

Bake for 30 minutes or until bubbly. It may take a bit longer if you use frozen fruit.

Okay...I'm off for now!

Hi there ladies..I have yoga on the books tomorrow...I will probably be feeling the nectar with Eion in the morning. My left hammie is still really tight and much less flexible compared to the right. I am hoping my tragic hips will continue to loosen. I am also thinking that I will increase my rotation by a day to add an extra day of yoga or pilates. I am not quite sure where to add it in, but I am really feeling like I need to. Just here signing off for the night...let's see who did I miss?

Traci...Glad you were feeling well this evening...I bet after you ate you went to sleep right next to DH!

Katie...Just have to say..you are right..everything in moderation! Do what feels best for you. I will chime in with the others..Keep your calorie count around 1800 or so...and add those extra calories in lean protein. I'm sure it will become clear what you need once you start.

Tracy...It seems you are taking this injury in stride. As usual...hope you are feeling better. Please let us know where you found the info on the zip and hollow...or if you can just explain it to me in your own words!

Okay...Hope you ladies have a great evening!

Good Friday Evening,

Had a nice time out with DH and the dogs out in the woods. I was driving and almost got stuck in some mud, so we quickly backed out of that area and got to an area that was drier. The dogs had a fabulous time running around, with the dachshund running her little short legs off trying to keep up with the Shorthair. They are soooo funny to watch. I sat in my chair reading magazines for a while, then curled up with a blanket on the ground and dozed off. DH tromped around and found about 3 cord worth of firewood trees to cut later on. It was a nice afternoon/evening. Tomorrow will be busy with housecleaning and shopping, getting ready for my papa's birthday.

Sandra, LOL, Martha Stewart I AM NOT! I am probably the least domestic lady on this whole board. I rarely cook any more at all, unless it's for a BBQ or special event, or making a cake for my boss, which by the way, turned out well and everyone seemed to like. Glad the cream is working on your eye. A few years ago, I kept getting this sty-like things on my eyelids and below the skin on my eyelids. Turns out they were plugged oil glands. Took a long time for those to go away. Hot, moist compresses helped a lot. Glad those are behind me. Debra is sending me some Baron yoga so we'll see how I like him. Change is always nice though. Hey, do you know where your DD is right now? LOL! You sure make me laugh!

Traci, so glad you enjoyed Eoin Finn's yoga. I really like him too. Love his laid back attitude and the dog is a crackup. It was never really an erotic experience for me, but maybe you have more of those hormones than I have. I am soooo excited for your soon to be (I'm sure of it) certification!!! If I could pick a trainer and someone for advice, I'd surely pick someone just like you! You will be awesome helping and training others. How in the world did you keep that secret so long? I'm really excited for you girl!!! I could never understand the starvation response thing with anorexics either. Why don't their bodies shut down and quit losing weight? I hear you on the remote thing. My DH gets so frustrated with ours. I'm the techier one of us two. We have one for the satellite, one for the TV and one for the DVD player. I know there is a universal code that you can put to combine but heck, I don't know how. Think I tried it once but it didn't work. Oh, how awful about the lawn mower falling out! Glad no one was hurt. Bet your DH was shaken when that happened. Bet you aren't mad at him about the remotes any more.

Tracy, glad you got the MRI done and over with. When will you have the results? If you ever have any pictures of your son's rock crawler, I would love to see them and show to my sons. They love all that kind of stuff.

Debra, I love to sleep late, but since I'm back working 5 days a week, no more of those lazy Friday mornings, and still being in my workout clothes and without a shower till noon. I miss it, but don't miss getting up so early to workout. But hey, I was up at 2:30 this morning anyway. I am enjoying my job immensely. I am pretty busy most of the time, on the phone a lot, but it's much more rewarding than my last autopilot job. Don't think this one will get that way for a while, if ever. Hey, no hurry on the DVD's. No Sherlock tonite either. I should probably send it back to Netflix soon and get something a little more stimulating (like Eoin Finn's yoga?)LOL! Hope you feel better and that bloated, yukky feeling passes soon. Why, oh, why do we have to endure this?

Wendy, yes, I did make the cake from scratch, but cooking is a rare thing for me anymore so don't be too impressed. It was an apple cake that is really, really moist and good. Had cream cheese frosting too. You were so right with Jari Love's voice not really matching her words. She just doesn't have that spark and genuineness that Tony or Cathe have, but my workout this morning was tough. Shoulder work is always hard for me and there is a bunch of it in GRTTC. I'll be receiving (I think) S&L from Debra. All right, could you please send me the Chocolate Stampede Cake recipe? What kind of dog is Baby? That has happened to our Shorthair who is pretty mild and quiet when left outside. The weinie dog throws herself against the door until you respond. WAM, WAM, WAM! No way could you forget she's out there.

Katie!! Hooray!!! Your P90X has arrived! So sorry you aren't feeling well. I think you are smart to wait until you feel better as it is intense and you have to be strong mentally too. I followed the portion plan myself. I also did the Classic rotation. I would maybe do the Lean rotation the next time. I don't have the energy for Doubles, not with my cycling too, unless you counted that as the Doubles (duh).

Got to finish reading the forums...

See y'all in the morning,

Jeanette
