WTF? I don't believe it!!

I just saw a commercial on TV for "Pepto Bismol" FOR CHILDREN!! So when kids get a sore tummy, instead of changing how they eat, just give them some drugs!! Guess drug companies want to make as much profit as possible, and children are an as-yet untapped market!

Scary, for sure.

This is why I'm okay that I haven't had kids yet... I don't see how I could possibly protect them from all this scary stuff!!

Dh bought caramel Ho Hos yesterday at the store, and I started wondering how we could ever have healthy kids... and teach them how to eat good foods... and not to eat trans fat...

...or get a tummy ache and take scary medicine.

That's strange. I've never seen the ad but as far as I know Pepto Bismol contains salicylates and should never be given to children due to the threat of Reye's syndrome.

In some instances, a child might be in such total discomfort that changing the way he or she eats is a solution that would take a while to work. There are also times, such as birthday parties, when lapses from healthy eating occur. I am all for helping children develop healthy eating patterns, but, in certain instances, I think that it is okay to give a medication that would help ease the pain right away. I would only give a medicine that my pediatrician okayed.

I agree with Caitlin...use only pediatrician-approved medications when needed and you should not administer them "like candy" but when they are neccessary I do not think one should hesitate to use them either.

As for whether Children's Pepto is "safe" or not, I really do not know but I am also pretty sure that it's not meant for infants so it's not a concern for me yet...I'm sure the formula for children is different than then one for adults though.

Pepto Bismol has been used for years for kids,(before the reyes syndrome was discovered, yes, I am that old! :). And the reyes syndrome is an excellent point to keep in mind, but this must just be a new ad campaign. and I have a daughter who would get upset stomachs NOT due to what she was eating and needed Mylanta for kids. So sometimes meds are needed!

I'm old too. I remember my mom giving me Pepto Bismol and Bayer Children's Aspirin:eek: . Did you know that Pepto Bismol was actually developed by a doctor specifically to treat children with Cholera? Of course, that was before they knew Cholera was caused by a bacteria. I just thought that was an interesting bit of trivia.

By the way, I agree with those of you who feel it's okay to treat sick kids with pediatrician approved meds.

I officially take back 1/2 of what I said.......in my latest pharmaceutical journals the new pepto for children is a 400mg calcium carbonate chewable tablet in bubble gum and watermelon flavors (no salicylates this time)...it sounds like a good deal. I just wish they weren't pushing the pills so much ...but at least the children get calcium out of it.:) I would have no problems recommending it under the right circumstances. They really should have changed the name!!

Hi Robin,

I'm an RN. I had no idea they came out with a children's formula! I agree, they should've changed the name.
