Hi can't answer your first question but for the 2nd one I use both dumbells and a barbell. If you just have dumbells then it is ok just to use only dumbells. It is nice to have both because it benefits in different ways for instance you can go heavier with a barbell. Sometimes in some of Cathe's workout when it calls for a barbell I do subitute with dumbells because being lazy on my part not feeling like changing the plates, LOL.
