Working out in the AM

A question for all you AM excercisers --

I've just changed my schedule that I'm working out before going to work. I get up in the morning and just go. I'm wondering, do you guys eat anything before the morning work out? Currently I don't - I don't seem to have time - If I eat something, won't I need to digest it before working out? Any good tips on easy morning fuel?

Thanks!

I work out from around 4:30 a.m. to around 6 a.m. during the week. Since it's so early, I never eat anything and I don't have any problems with running out of steam. On weekends, I work out a bit later so I do usually eat something small first (a bowl of cerial or fruit with yogurt). I usually wait up to two hours before I do my workout after eating. I really don't see a difference in energy level or strength when I compare my weekday/no food workouts with my weekend/eat first workouts.

I only do my cardio early in the morning--usually around 6--& I don't eat anything (other than the few obligatory gulps of strong coffee). I work out mid morning on the w/e & do lift--I ALWAYS eat something immediately before and after these workouts, which are about 2 hours long.

I roll out of bed and workout at 6. I don't eat anything, just drink lots of water. I've tried eating, but it makes me nauseous. (sp?)

Hi!

I just started working out a 5 a.m. this week. I do not eat anything (no time also) but I drink tons of water, usually whatever I can gulp down. It does not seem as bad as I thought...only the first day was the toughest. It seems to be getting easier. I usually end up eating breakfast at about 8 a.m. roughly two hours after my work out and that seems to be fine.

Good luck:)

I get up at 5:15 A.M. in order to get my workout in before my children awaken and the hubby leaves for work. I never eat anything before I exercise. Not only does time not allow for it, but I can't stomach food before a workout. If I am going to do strength training after my morning run, I will have a small glass of orange juice before I start with the weights. Also, I learned from my racing days that a carbo snack before I go to bed, helps as well with early morning workouts. Usually I will have a couple of graham crackers and 1/2 a banana, or something similar.
You are going to have to experiment to see what works for you.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! I just thought I was doing it 'wrong' by not eating before. I'm glad to hear other people don't also. The eating a carb snack before bed sounds like a great suggestion! I usually have a very light dinner and tend to wake up with that hollow, hungry feeling. The snack will probably help that!

You are welcome, Ruppie. I hope the p.m. snack is helpful to you. It's nice to know there are other diehards like me, working out in the pre-dawn hours! :)

I am trying to psych myself up for a change to morning workouts. It would be 6 to 7 am, so not bad...but this am I woke up by accident at 6 am (I wasn't trying...like I said, I am psyching myself up still!) and thought "Oh, Lord...it is still DARK!" HOW DO YOU GUYS DO IT!!!

I keep starting over with early am exercising, then something will throw me off. A couple of bad sleep nights, or the fact that dh gets up at 5:45 to exercise, so I would have to get up at 4:30 to even get done so that he could have the workout room and TV. I was doing 5 am, but 4:30? Jeez. I don't mind the getting up---I'm naturally a morning person,---but I hate to go to bed early enough to get up. Especially like now when my sons are home from college and I only have a few evenings left with them. I have been really off the normal exercise times lately.......

My alarm goes off at 3:50am and I am up by 4:00am and by 4:15am, I am working out. It is tough. I have to be in bed by 9:00 each night. I am usually doing my abs as it is just starting to get light outside. Then I get ready and it is off to work. I do more in the morning than some people do all day! No wonder I am so exhausted at the end of the day.

Hey Cab, maybe I have become less obsessive with age, but you do what you can, when you can. You can always get your workout schedule back on track. As a mother of 3 young boys myself, I say enjoy those last, precious summer evenings with your sons. You can't get those back ;-)
