Working out alone

I have a weird thing, I rather work out at home and when no one is home to see me. I guess I feel more comfortable that then having people stare at me working out, in a way in case I mess up a step or two LOL does anyone do the same?

I organize my days around when my family will NOT be home so that I can exercise in peace with no one to watch me or bother me. I am pretty self-conscious when I work out and unless I'm at a gym where everyone else is doing the same thing and making themselves look silly in classes, I really prefer to be home alone when I workout. It makes it more "me time".

I almost had a nervous breakdown before the road trip and just about canceled at the last minute precisely because I was terrified of working out in front of people.

Well if I'm home doing my Cathe stuff, then yeah, I do like to be alone. I also belong to a gym though and don't mind in a class setting from time to time. Depends what I am doing. I also don't mind being around others if I'm on the tread or whatever. I don't like going to the gym to w/o with someone. I do prefer to be alone in that sense.

I can't imagine working out at the gym anymore. It's not so much people seeing me, it's just I don't want to be bothered with the whole thing (see Shelley's low maintenance thread). Not that I got dressed up to go the the gym, but my workout clothes had to cover more when I did. I love working out in a sports bra and shorts - one pair has a hole in them...do I care? Of course not...I work out at home, get the point?:)

I also like that, if I get confused about a step, I can rewind to my heart's content, until I get it, or just get fed up.

I think I got off the subject...sorry. It's Monday and I didn't get enough sleep last night.

I'm with ya Lesliemarie! DH has wanted to work out with me a couple of times and I have avoided it. My exercise time is my sacred alone time. I also feel like I look silly :)

I feel pretty goofy also. I do not even like it if someone walks though the room. Especialy if I am doing a move I am not very good at like push-ups.

I don't like being around people either. I get nervous thinking and starting wondering if the person next to me is competing with me or thinks I'm trying to compete with them. (I know it's silly!)

I worked in a gym for a while as a personal trainer and STILL never felt comfortable working out in the gym. I could totally relate whenever one of my clients would tell me how uncomfortable they are.

I don't mind Jazzercise because I am in better shape than a good number of the chicks there. I would be nervous going to a bootcamp class or the like at a gym.

I don't know, I like both, depending on what I'm doing, my mood & my schedule. I have a training partner I lift with at the gym & while the sessions actually last longer they seem to go faster b/c we're good friends & we have a lot of fun together. On the other hand, sometimes when our schedules don't mesh it's kind of a relief b/c I get home at a much more reasonable time.

But when it comes to cardio, whether I'm at home or at the gym stay out of my way & leave me alone.........I don't want conversation slowing me down & messing up the effectiveness of my workout.

:D This is me to a tee Tete. I throw on whatever to work out in at home. As long as I'm comfortable, I don't care. I already put enough pressure on myself. I don't need the additional pressure of working out in a group environment. I work out when my husband is not home mostly. If he is home, I let him know that I'm about to work out and he won't bother me.

It depends on what workout I do. If it's kickboxing, Turbo Jam, or hi-lo I prefer to be alone because I feel rather silly flailing my arms and legs around. However, for stepping or weights I don't mind having an audience. My DD's are young and have been watching me workout to that "Cathe person" since they were babies, so it doesn't even phase them to watch me. DH has no interest in watching me and usually ignores me if he's in the room.

When I joined a gym years ago I hated working out with others because I don't enjoy making small talk, or being stared at.

I went to use the treadmill at our gym last weekend and it felt like it took more time to pack all the "junk" I needed than it did to workout. (ie. towel, water bottle, lock, heart rate monitor, clothes, shoes, socks, toiletries)

I have to admit though that it is more fun and motivating working out with other people around. :) It's just something I don't have the time to do every day.

I enjoy the camaraderie of others when working out, IF, they are working out with me or near me. However, what I don't like is someone just watching me and not working out themselves, whether at the gym or at home. If it's at home, I ask the person watching to either work out with me or leave the room ... it's not a show for their entertainment! I think watchers at the gym are usually transient who are looking to see if they're interested in taking the class. I don't feel as tho I'm in competition with others -- even if someone else feels competitive ... it takes 2 to play that game.

I hated working out in a gym. I'm kind of a loner and like to spend time in my own head. I didn't like people chatting with me when I was exercising. Of course, if I was exercising with a good friend, that would be different.

I'm the same way when I go to my daughter's tae kwon do class. I like to wait for her while doing a Sudoku or reading a book. There's this woman there who ALWAYS talks to me. She's very nice, but talks a lot. And too loudly. I don't like to be a distraction for the class. Last night, my daughter told me I was too loud during her class. I was like "It wasn't ME!!!! I wanted to read my book!!!!"

i like working out at home
1. I can do a DVD when i want to
2. I can get it done in less time than going to the Gym
3. I dont even have to bush my teeth or do my hair and i can workout in my underwear and nobody cares<--i dont really do that
4. Its the only time of day where i dont let people bother me

I like working out at home, but if my DH is around, he will inevitably try to strike up a conversation with me as I'm huffing and puffing away! I like it when I'm ALONE at home better than working out at the gym when I used to do that. The drawbacks to the gym for me were: class times may conflict, appropriate dress, & travel to and from.

I agree Doreen although I think I would have the biggest issue with appropriate dress. Trying to make myself look presentable just to go get all sweaty is not appealing to me. I used to go to a gym years ago and some of the women would come in wearing full make up. What's the point really? You're just gonna sweat it off and look horrible. When I have been forced to work out at a gym (usually at hotels), I really hate it. Treadmills make me dizzy and ellipticals are too repetitive. I hate doing the same repetitive motion for what seems like forever. Aside from the fact that I actually like being alone, I just get more variety from my videos than I do from a gym.

Funny thing but I LOVE to workout when my DH is arround! We actually work out at the same time in the same room.He does weight trainning and I do whatever is on my Cathe rotation. He helps me with my posture and he keeps saying things like: " Oh! You are doing so good!" or he cheers when I'm doing Imax 3 and I'm able to do the entire thing without dropping dead! :p I like the support! And when I'm about to give up, he stands by my side and says: "Cha, cha, cha!!!" (That's his Cathe impression):+ It cracks me up!
I do not workout at the gym because I don't have time or money. Home is just convenient.;-)
