Working a different body part each day

I have heard great things about your videos and have been looking at the different videos on your website to purchase. My question is probably a simple one . . . is it really necessary to work a different body part each day? I have used the "Firm" workout videos in the past two months that combine both aerobics and total body weight training in the same workout and I'm wondering if I should not have been doing those every day either (especially considering I haven't seen hardly any results with them . . . which is why I'm here!!) Basically, is it more effective to do separate strength training and cardio workouts on opposite days as opposed to doing the videotapes that combine them in the same workout? Considering I only have about an hour each morning to work out, I don't think I could do BOTH in the same morning after looking at your tapes, unless I'm missing something? How often would you suggest weight training as opposed to cardio for a "beginner" and could you suggest your favorite "beginner" tapes?

Hi, I'm not Cathe and will just try to touch upon one of your questions- stength training. I used to skip around with weight routines a lot (ex: doing gym machines one week, Cathe tapes the next), and I never got any results. I just joined a new gym and the trainer set me up doing chest/shoulders/triceps one day, then back/biceps, then legs another. This way you can really focus on the muscle and do more sets/exercises instead of flying through your reps because you have so many body parts to train. I get so sore! So I'm going to try split routines for awhile.
Good luck!

missyb70,

Have you checked out the "For Dummies" series? I think they have them at KMart. Once you get around the awful name:), they are really good beginner tapes. They are easy to follow and very safe! I would recommend doing cardio and strength training on separate or alternating days and shooting for 4-5 days of cardio and 2 days of strength. Of course, you will find how and what you like and what suits you as you progress and you can "tweak" your routine. Cathe has a video called the Wedding Video, (which I have ordered from half.com but have yet to receive)which is highly recommended for beginners as a first Cathe tape.. When you have some experience under your belt check out the Cross Train Express which does daily cardio and one body part strength training per day and is awesone!

There are so many excellent tapes out there! Good luck!

I was thinking CTX also when I read this post!! It's not really a circuit workout except for Power Circuit, but it still has the one body part after the cardio (back and abs). This is a 6 set series and each workout only last an hour. After I used this series, I went back to BodyMax (my all time fave) and I found the workout to be alot easier. I haven't done Cathe's strength tapes in a while, due to being on a program that I made up for myself. And honestly, I miss them. If you want to alternate weights one day with cardio the next, then I'd suggest PS Series with IMAX, MIC, and Power Max. Just my little ol' 2 cents:)!!

I have mine set up for cardio 3 days per week(Sun., Tues., Thurs.) and weight work Mon., Wed. Fri.
There are a million ideas on how to work out. My splits are chest/triceps, back/biceps, shoulders/legs. Abs all 3 days. You really should put back and bis together and chest and tris together. Virtually all chest exercises work tris secondarily and virtually all back movements work bis secondarily.
My cardio is intense mostly..........spin class on Sun., on my own on Tues....usually interval work on some type of machine, and Spin/Pump class on Thurs. I rotate Cathe in when I need to switch up for something different. It's just been very hard to exercise at home and try to watch our 1 yr. old when my wife works.
This works for me........and my workout time is very constrained during the week.
Trevor :)
