I have it, and it's a syndrome, not a disease.
It's an extra connection in the heart that can cause extra heart beats. With some people, it causes their heart to beat so fast it can be fatal (when I was first diagnosed, before I had a stress test and EKG, both ER and Chicago Hope had episodes about WPW patients who were "going to die" if they didn't get operated on right away!!!).
My stress test showed that my extra connection doesn't function after my heart gets above a certain BPM, so the cardiologist said I don't have to have anything done about it.
Mine is usually asymptomatic, but every once in awhile, I'll get some extra beats (and I first got it diagnosed when I had a two-week period when I was getting them: kind of felt like a scarab beetle flittering around in my chest).
It doesn't make using heart-rate monitors work very well.

I do not believe it is hereditary, but, as Kathryn indicated, it can be VERY serious. If you'd like to know about my husband's cardiac arrest from it in 2006, you can go to our website at [email protected].

ETA: My husband required three attempts to completely ablate the pathway, but now he is "cured." He works out, runs, bikes, etc., and has for many years.

Thank you all for your help & concern!! The Dr's visit this am went very well. He said everything is A ok!! A healthy young man. No worries.

Tami, were you self diagnosing on the Internet?!? You are so busted!
We do have a friend who had WPW, he had ablation about 15 years ago and has been fine ever since. Just for future reference!

Not self diagnosing (although I have done that) history in family.
