Why internet research is dangerous!

Geez, . . . lately I've had some shortness of breath. I'm sure because of stress, . .still morning the loss of my MIL and I type in shortness of breath on a google search sheez some of the stuff I've read "heart attack" "pulmonary embolism" "collapsed lung." I got shortness of breath freaking out reading about shortness of breath. When my FIL was diagnosed with Lymphoma the Dr. said what ever you do don't look this up on the internet. I mean I love the fact the internet exists for some things e-mail, this forum, craft blogs, but sometimes, you just have to be careful about what you read.

I totally agree 100%! My mom thinks she has every sickness under the sun because she googles EVERYTHING. I told her to stop because she is becoming obsessed and turning into a hypochondriac! The internet has some valuable info but the best bet when you're worried is go the old fashioned route and get checked by a doctor. Some people (ie, my mom) think if they can self-diagnose then they are ok but that mostly winds up freaking them out even more.

Yes - so true! You can figure out some great stuff, and you can also totally freak yourself out. I did just read an article in a magazine about a lady who started getting a pain in her neck when she had alcohol. It kept happening, after a glass of wine or such, so she googled "weird alcohol pain in neck" (or something like that) and that is a rare symptom of Hodgkin's lymphoma (I think it was - I'm not much on facts here, am I?!) Anyway, she went to the doctor and sure enough, she had it, was treated and totally cured because it was caught so early, thanks to her weird symptom! Most people, though, need to stay off for medical stuff, or use it to educate, not figure out what might be wrong.

Janie - I had shortness of breath for years and complained to every doctor, only to be told I needed to get in shape (ummm, nope, not the problem) When I was finally diagnosed with asthma, I was not far from that doctor sending me straight to the emergency room as my breathing was only points away from what she called the red zone. Because I don't wheeze, no doctor went any further to investigate. Yours is probably stress though - you have been through a lot. Have you tried some yoga? For some strange reason, peppermint Altoids help me sometimes too.

I agree.
When I was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, and before I had a heart stress test for it, I did a bit of research on it, and it seems like the 'worst case scenario' is always what stands out the most!

It didn't help that--no kidding!--within the two weeks I was waiting to see the cardiologist, ER had a patient with WPW who had some complications, and Chicago Hope had a guy --played by Richard Crenna-who had to have an operation for it--by Barbara Hershecy-- "IMMEDIATELY, OR HE COULD DIE!!!!!".

I also tend to be a bit of a hypochondriac: when I hear the symptoms for such-and-such disease, I often think I have at least some of them!

Hi there Shanna. peppermint Altoids? Really. Okay, . . I'm going to try that and the yoga. I've been thinking I don't do enough yoga.
Asthma, . . how did they finally figure it out? I've always gotten anxiety attacks when stressed so I'm hoping that is my problem. Every time I see a Dr. they tell me to stop drinking coffee and that it is because of stress. If you can believe the breathing through a paper bag thing actually helps and usually makes it go away but for some reason it has stuck around. Like you said it probably is just stress. :(

The biggest problem with researching symptoms is that if you look at one symptom (or even several), you get thousands of possibilities! Only a doctor is qualified to review your symptoms and determine a diagnosis. It takes more than just saying, "oh, I'm having shortness of breath. I must have asthma or emphysema or congestive heart failure!" You need a series of tests and to determine that.

I think the worst things ever created are the medical websites!
