For me, I have to say "self". I don't want to look "average". I want to go beyond. I want to push my body to the point that I can change it to the degree of what I want it to look like no matter how impossible it might seem to someone else. My body...my challenge...MY LIFE!
If I want something, I will get it, and I am going after it...barbells and all. ;-)
In saying this, hope everyone has a really great workout!

I'm a toss-up between self and society. I want to have a killer bod and at the same time I make myself proud by being part of that small percentage of the American population who take care of themselves properly (and I'm not talking size here people so please don't get mad! :) I'm just talking diet, exercise, vitamins, water, getting off the couch, eschewing fast food, etc.).

I love how it makes me feel and that I am aging youthfully. Does that make sense? :) My head may look 42 but I am slim and strong and more energetic than many younger non-exercisers. The difference between myself and the mothers who have gotten more plump in their 40's is even more marked. (I am still deeply involved in the Elementry School scene, the Middle School and High School scenes, as well, because of the age spread among my kids.) They seem more "matronly". My diet and exercise program are largely responsible. The bonus of stress reduction when life get's crazy is high on my list too.

Maturity is the ability to do a job whether or not you are supervised, to carry money without spending it, and to bear an injustice without wanting to get even.

It's sad that taking care of ourselves puts us in the minority isn't it. I am a nurse practitioner and have patients everyday ask how do you stay so slim? When I tell them healthy eating and exercise 4-6 days a week, many are like - Oh. I guess they expected an easy answer. I am happy to say that I have inspired some to start programs. Frankly I am better educated to teach people how to take care of themselves since I've started this journey two years ago. We are all setting examples for others to follow!!!

Agreed, Catherine--there's no magic pill, but everyone is always looking for it anyhow. I workout because I love the the physical results and also the mental results--it improves my mood and my self-esteem. The day just doesn't feel right unless I get a workout in (or at least a stretch on rest days!).

It's funny, because when I first started working out, I sort of just did it--I never really thought that I could even have a chance at getting anything close to getting muscle definition. But I knew that you were "supposed to" workout at least 3 times/week, and so I started doing it. It still amazes me that I've transformed my body. I work in an office full of 20-somethings, and I am about the same size as most of the women. They all think I'm about 35, but I'll be 46 this spring. :) Love it!

I also workout because it keeps my weight down and I can wear very small clothes sizes............Rhonda

I work out b/c it makes me feel good both mentally and physically, because it makes me look better, and last but not least...I must admit...so that when I want that piece of cake or that extra serving of lasagna, I can eat it with out being afraid b/c I know that I will work it off!!! :p }( :p

Have a great work out!

I didn't vote, b/c the reason I started working out was purely vanity. Now I do it out of habit.

The person I'm trying to impress is ME. I love how exercise makes me feel about myself. I truly believe beauty starts on the inside, & when I feel beautiful I think other people see it too.

I think that is often the case. That is why I started working out as well, but since then, like you, I have come to realize so many other benefits of it! :)

Have a great work out!

I know "self" covers just health/longevity, which I voted for. But I'd like to add, if I may, fulfillment/a sense of accomplishment. Such as when I finally get Cathe's choreography (after weeks of trying) or when I finally match her weight in an exercise.

I voted self because I really don't like how I look or feel when I don't workout. When I stay consistent and start to see results, it seems like my whole life improves.:)

I voted Self. I do workout to be healthy and fit, but, I workout six days a week for vanity reasons.

I voted "Self," too. I started working out for a lot of the reasons already posted, but I stick with it because it is probably the SOLE activity that I do just for me - not for the kids, the house, the job, the boss, or anyone else... just me. :) I am not 20 and will never look it, but I will tell you, most of the time I feel fantastic about myself, and I know working out regularly is a major part of this.

Cheers,
Marie

i voted self, because i need to lose weight for myself and my health, and i want to look good for myself when i look in the mirror. plus fitting into something less than a 14 or 16 would be nice.

There is no doubt no one in my life has ever prompted me to work out. No one has ever motivated me to work out.

I do this for myself. It is something I can do for myself and make myself happy. Also, It makes me a better human being all around.
I try to impress no human being.

I work out for myself. To keep myself sane. If I have to miss a day or two, I can tell. I'm not fun to be around. It's my "me" time, my time to think and plan and let all the thoughts I don't normally have time to think go running through my head.

I also work out because my family health history is pretty bad. And I want to do the best I can to be here as long as I can, and to make that time quality time.
