Why do some people think weather is so important??

My only concern with the weather is when our government tries to balance it with federal payouts for weather disasters.

Pretty much people choose where they live, no one is forced to live anywhere. Why is it some states gets bailouts for weather emergencies that come with their locations and others not?

I've watched my federal tax dollars pay for disasters in hurricane states that are coastal and get hit by hurricanes on a regular basis. Likewise with earthquakes and tornadoes. Shouldn't those states and taxpayers be buying insurance for what they know is going to happen?

I live in Vermont. Our state and towns have to pay their snow removal costs. When we have cold snaps, (one year never going above zero for the whole month of January), there is no federally subsidized fuel assistance. Well, Venezuela is donating fuel.

I know,it's political, we only have 3 electoral college votes.

Personally, I like my weather, one of the reasons I chose to live here. I just get tired of paying for other peoples bad weather, over and over again.

As Charles Darwin said, when confronted with adversity, an organism has three options, adapt, migrate or die

My husband is from Tennessee and we live in Georgia now. I absolutely hate the South! Whenever I bring up the subject of moving his response is "it's too cold" or in Washington's case "it rains all the time". It gets plenty cold in Georgia. Overnight temps have been in the teens and 20's the past few days and morning temps have been at or slightly below freezing. He has the thinnest skin when it comes to cold weather.

Do I enjoy cold weather? Heck no! I'm from the Caribbean so I'm used to tropical weather, but there are a lot more important things to consider about a particular location than the weather. I also hate the stifling hot summer weather here but it comes with the territory. It's not a reason to rule a place out.

Of all the places I've lived in the US, I enjoyed Alaska the most. You just can't beat the scenery and it's just a beautiful place. I also don't mind the snow. People tend to think that Alaska is buried in snow 10 months of the year. That is not the case. It snows infrequently but when it snows, you get a good bit. The plows are on the street before it even starts snowing. I get the same reaction from people when I mention I used to live there. Isn't it cold? Isn't it dark all the time? Yes and yes but, you adapt.

I grew up in South Florida and moved to Ohio for college and have lived here ever since. When I would tell people that I moved here from FL, I always got the same question "why are you here?".

I love living in the midwest compared to S. Florida. I love the changing seasons and I love winter most of the time. I don't miss the heat and humidity all year round at all. I have absolutely no desire to move back at all - I'm so content where I'm at. Even today when the forecast is cold and snowy and the kids keep getting snow days!:p

Florida weather is not for wimps, if it were the snow birds (northerners with second homes in Florida) would come stay May through August and not December through March.

It gets blasted hot here! Try doing Cathe workouts six months a year in 90% humidity and average 85-90 degrees :)

Agreed! I admittedly don't know all the particulars but I am disgusted by our tax dollars bailing out millionaires foolish/stubborn enough to build homes in hurricane areas.

Weather Shmeather. We're all so different, but for me, it's not about the weather. I could be happy living in any big city, no matter what the weather. It's just my personality. Dependency on a car makes me feel lonely and alienated. I like to walk everywhere, see people and dogs I know, and feel in touch with my neighbors. Put me in the suburbs, and I just can't adapt at all. I immediately become lonely and depressd. But weather? I can always adapt to weather. Rain, snow, sunshine, whatever. Bring it on. I can always shop for more clothes. }(

Well, is it really about other people's obsession with the weather, or is it a touch of oversensitivity to criticism of our lifestyle choices?

For me the weather is interesting right now just because... it's interesting right now. But in the long run, I don't care where anyone else lives and what the weather is like in those places. I think people make choices, and if they live in a place, there must be some good reason for that. I like where I live (NEPA), but I could take the weather or leave it. The fall and spring are lovely, but it's just as hot here as some other places in the summer, and cold is cold no matter where you are.

I do also think that it's a bit judgmental to make the assumption that everyone getting "bailed out" by the government is an "uber-millionaire." Many people live in less-than-ideal locales because they can't afford to move or don't know any different. Just look at the results of Hurricane Katrina last year. The people who suffered were definitely NOT the wealthy, who had other options.

I'm a tried and true native New Englander and wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world. I disagree with the fact that people pay more to live in warmer climates because where I live in CT, it's one of the most expensive places to live in the country, and today it's in the low 20's! I don't mind though. I love the changing of the seasons. Most of my friends feel the same way. We discuss parents who have migrated to Florida and the consenses is mutual. We have no desire to live in an area where it's hot 360 days a year. Of course, we may feel differently as we get older and our blood gets thinner, but right now, we're very happy living in the frigid north!

Its good to know that us midwesterners are not the only ones who take the heat for living in 'horrible' weather conditions - LOL -

Everyone is right here - - I should not take so personally the "weather" comments I get from my friends and family in the warmer climate zones, I guess over the years I have grown more sensitive to them bc its just assumed that I must hate the winter! On the contrary, I love it! Took the nieces and nephews sledding the other day and we had a blast!

Anyway, thank you all - I enjoyed all the perspectives and its nice to see that on this forum we have such a wide range and very diverse crowd - from the southern californians, to the great lakers, to the Florida keyers - and the midwesterners - - - FANTASTIC!

Have a great day!

I love the weather. It IS important to me, because I love to be outside. I'm a southerner, so I have plenty of hot weather, but I actually prefer the cold stuff. I'm one of those who worships the weather forecast, especially when I'm at home and have a big day planned outside!

Not to one-up anyone, but I'm Canadian. A fair number of Americans seem to believe that we live year-round in parkas, driving dog sleds and residing in igloos. Last summer it was 105 degrees here. Yes, some of us do get lots of snow in winter, some more than others, but we also have places that are more temperate.

And for the record, I don't own a parka, my dogs wouldn't know what to do with a sled, and my house is stone and siding;)

I live in MN, grew up in Chicago, and I always look forward to Spring and would love to move where it is warm all year. Now, my DH, loves winter. We were in LA a few weeks ago when it was cold there visiting DH's sister. Their house was freezing the whole time we were there (I had to wear my jacket in the house). At least here in MN we know how to keep our house warm :)

Sometimes I think the only reason people bang on and on about the weather is just so they will have something to talk about, when otherwise they'd have nothing to say! ;)

I'm from Australia and living in Scotland, and this time of year whenever anyone hears my accent they say, "Why are you living HERE!? Don't you want to be back in the SUN!?" Arrrgh!

But I guess if we didn't talk about the weather it'd have to be football or politics instead, hehe :)

This is a huge pet peeve for my DH. He is from WA and anytime we tell anyone that, they go "Oh, it rains there a lot". It's a BIG state, but everyone assumes the entire state has Seattle's weather. My DH is from Spokane and they have almost the same weather we have here in PA. We are always having to explain to people that all of WA is not a big rain soaked mud puddle. ;)
