Why do old threads get pulled up

and acted on like they're new? I understand pulling up old ones to update progress, etc. But there are some in the ask Cathe forum that are a few years old. Is there a reason for this?

i noticed that as well, and the recent messages just say bump. i don't know maybe somebody is making a statement.

Right - I understand that, but if you're new, how do you get to a thread that's 2 years old?

By doing a search for specific words, I suppose.

(And it's almost 3 years old! I put a note on that old creaky thread that was brought up, warning about how old it was).

I hate it when people 'bump' anyway. If you want more info on something, you can at least add your own short message.

I've almost been guilty myself. I've searched for a topic I was interested in then found a post I wanted to comment on. You have to remember to check the date or you end up unknowingly replying to a very old post.

There is no tragedy to bringing up an old thread, and, if you dislike something, the best thing to do is to ignore it. Most people forget this little bit of psychology.

While I agree it can be a shock to be into a thread that turns out to be old (esp. when you stumble on your own ancient post deeper in:)), I just don't get why people get so riled up about old threads rearing their ugly heads. And if it's a short thread (not several pages long so you have to hunt down your old post) like the one I encountered in another section, then I see no major problem.

Now I'm not in favor of reviving every and any old threads. But some are worth it and as long as it's not overwhelming the board, I see no reason to get upset. (Maybe because most of us have other things in our off-line lives that are bigger concerns...)

Maybe the solution is to ask the same questions over in new threads...but people have been known to get upset because it seems the same questions come up over and over....

Kathryn is right...if you're going to bump an old thread, please elaborate or explain why you're bumping that old thread. I'm not much in favor of just plain bumping anyway...
