Why do I still get winded climbing the stairs!?!

Can someone explain this to me???

I have no problem finishing IMAX3 on an 8" step, or completing MIC (Well - it's tough but I CAN do it). So why is it that every morning when I get to work and climb 2 lousy flights of stairs, I'm winded by the time I get to the top? Does anyone else experience this? I thought it was supposed to get easier?

It's called exercise-specificity. You become efficient at whatever exercise you do. So, just because you get winded climbing stairs doesn't mean you are not in shape. You're just not in shape for climbing stairs.

For me, running 6 miles in under an hour is easier than doing a Cathe step tape. PowerMax almost killed me this morning.

I am the same way with stairs. I have just attributed this to my asthma (I have exercised induced asthma) in the past.

I have the same thing happen to me too. Here is what I think happens:
When we do any type of exercise, the body immediatley responds to the activity by raising the heart rate because the nervous system has been trained to do this. The body says "oh, she is exercising again, get ready". And there is an immediate response. The real indication of fitness is how fast you recover. When I climb up the stairs, I recover very quickly.

You should see me going up two flights of stairs & trying to eat my breakfast. You'd think I was ready to code. But I refuse to take the elevators like most people I work with.

I am the same way, too! I attribute it to the fact that I usually take the stairs 2 at a time or run up the stairs pretty quickly. It bothers me that I can finish Cathe's tapes, but not a lousy flight of stairs!

I climb 5 flights every day. Today I was so winded and wouldn't you know I ran into one of the SVPs at work and had to try to carry on a conversation. So embarrasing !

Hey...just to let y'all know...I think this sometimes has to do with overtraining or at the very least regular Cathe workouts in addition to climbing stairs cuz I tell ya......now that I don't work out much, climbing stairs no longer makes my legs burn or feels so hard....

Go figure!:)

I was even considering calling my doctor. My solution was to run up and down the stairs a few times a day. I guess you could call it "stair training." I also never take escalators or elevators (Except at some of the Washington, D.C. metro stations because they are the definitely the "stairways to heaven").

Especially the DuPont Circle exit!! You have to walk up those crazy stairs for like 20 minutes!

I get winded on stairs and always have. I think part of it is that when I work out at home, I breathe with an open mouth, but when I'm in public, I try not to do that, so I don't get enough oxygen. It's a possibility.
