Why do I keep gaining weight??

RE: I forgot to ask him that!!

Can you still take thyroid medicine while pregnant?? It won't harm the fetus? Just curious.

RE: I forgot to ask him that!!

Synthroid is safe in pregnancy and has failed to demonstrate any risk to the fetus throughout the pregnancy. :)

"I guess if it gets out of wack during pregnancy,it can cause miscarriage or premature labor. "

Becky, not only can it cause miscarriage or preterm labor, but it can also cause mental retardation!! It's extremely important that hypothyroids who are pregnant or who want to conceive pay particular attention to their TSH.

Aimee, I wanted to let you know that I had postpartum hypothyroidism that was diagnosed about 9 months after my son was born. I had also gained a significant amount of weight unexpectedly (20 pounds in 4 months). Not only did it cause me fatigue and depression, but it caused violent mood swings and severe joint pains. I consulted only when my joint pains started, because they were so severe, I couldn't climb up the stairs, pick up my baby or change his diaper! It took me about 2 weeks after starting taking synthroid to feel a bit better, and I was back to my normal self within 6 weeks. I lost 15 pounds in those 6 weeks, just to give you an idea (without changing my eating... just working out).

Hope all goes well for you!

RE: I forgot to ask him that!!

That is very true. My doctor has tested my TSH every other month during this pregnancy. Also, I had my TSH tested the month before my husband and I started trying to become pregnant because I know that it can greatly affect conception. So much to think about, but boy does it make a huge difference!

RE: Wow!! So much to think about!!

My husband and I are leaving things in God's hands, if you will, but now I'm concerned. Maybe we should use contraceptive until I know my thyroid levels are normal??

Aimee, I didn't mean to scare you!! You said in a previous post that your TSH was very high I believe?? Anyways, if that is the case, there's a good chance you couldn't even conceive right now. However, it might be safer to use some form of contraception (not oral contraceptives for you though) until your TSH is closer to normal. Since you are seeing your doctor in 6 weeks, you should ask him about this as well when you see him (another suggestion: write all the questions down on a list, bring it to your appt because we tend to be very "forgetful" in the MDs office!).

Take care!

You can say that again!! I always forget something when I'm there. Good suggestion. I'll do that. I just had the Noplant taken out in Aug. Maybe, low thyroid is a side effect from that too.?
