Why can't I wear heels?!

I wore 1-inch, well made, cushioned heels today to a meeting with a client and my feet are just killing me. Plus, my back was killing me just from wearing my heels while sitting at my desk. I wear clogs most of the time--I guess I'm spoiled by them. But I really would like to look professional when I need to, and not always wear round-toed, flat clogs. Plus, I have a family function coming up next month, and I really wanted to wear these shoes and not my usual dorky-looking clogs. Are heels always this bad? !

Some people are more sensitive than others but I don't have any science to back it up.

I once saw on some "Prepping for the Red Carpet" show that the actresses often go into the PS office to get injections in the balls of their feet so that they can tolerate the higher heeled shoes!

I don't know if it is something you could work on getting use to or not!! I would definately wait for a better response than mine before trying...since you mentioned back pain!!

Wow! That's really unbelievable.

Anyhow, I wound up talking to a friend of mine about it last night, and she recommended these. I'm going to give them a try.

I have a hard time with heels too. I wear sneakers most of the time. When I do wear heels, I like the ones with nice wide "chunky" heels and rounded toes. That way I have a nice stable base and plenty of room for my toes. I can't do skinny heels and pointy toes without tipping over but the chunkier shoes, I can wear for hours.

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good

I can't wear heals that well either, but I have to wear them every day at work. And of course pointy toes are what is in style now. I don't understand how people can fit their toes in there comfortably. I am wearing pointing heals right now and they are killing me. I also get HORRIBLE foot cramps at night if I wear anything other than 1 inch heals. And I think my toes will be forever disfigured from these pointy toed shoes.

Anyway, I always wear mine with stockings and also have inserts that prevent my foot from sliding all the way to the front of the shoe. These things seem to help.

Bunbun, if you try these inserts I hope you will post a review. I have a terrible time wearing heels because of the pressure on the balls of my feet. I'd be really interested in knowing what you think of the inserts.

I refuse to wear heels, I don't care what the occasion is. They destroy my feet, and those pointy-toed things actually make my toes go numb. I've heard bad things about how high heels can throw off your spinal alignment, but I don't have any documentation on it. I actually buy clothes so that they'll go with the flat, wide-toed, boxy type shoe that I wear. My personal opinion is that I'd rather feel good than look good when it comes to shoes.

Can you tell I feel rather strongly about this? :p

I'm with you!

I will occasionally wear something with up to a 1 1/2" heel (some PT...Peggy? Brill...wrote that short heels are actually better than flats for some reason). The last time I wore higher heels was when I was interviewing for jobs 16 years ago, and by the time I interviewed where I actually work, I'd decided to ditch the women's suits and heels (which I don't wear anyway!) and dress more like I really would. Didn't seem to hinder me in any way.

Lately, I've been wearing Earth negative heel shoes, so I go even beyond flats!

I wear heels every day and love them... the pointier the better!

I can think of a couple of reasons your shoes may not feel good, and no offense intended, but...

1. Were they cheap? Cheap shoes are... cheap! They are made out of crappy material, they aren't fitted correctly, and they certainly do not wear well. I buy 1 or 2 pair of really good shoes a season now instead of the racks of crappy stuff I used to purchase.

2. Are they the right size? Get your foot professionally measured in a SHOE store (not JCPenneys or a department store). I bought shoes .5 size off for years and really suffered.

3. Well-made pointy shoes actually have space at the tip so your toes should not be crammed in up there.

Another tip is to wear them around the house with trouser socks for a few days so that you can break them in some.

Good luck!

I saw the title of your post, Bunbun, and was ready to respond that I can't wear heels either. But a one-inch heel doesn't bother me. Have you tried Aerosoles? Some of their shoes are super comfortable, and they have stores all over the city.

I will absolutely post a review of theinsolias when I get them. Another woman in my office is trying them, too, so I will let you know what she thinks.

As for the shoes that hurt, they weren't cheap--Ann Taylor. Do I have to go to, say, Sacco, and spend $185 to get shoes that don't hurt? I also recently bought a pair of Aerosoles with tiny heels--maybe half an inch. Don't know if those hurt yet, though, cause I haven't worn them.

I'm pretty certain that I've read that heels throw your spine out of alignment, too. I spend 95% of my time in jeans and clogs--I work in a casual office. But there are days when I have to wear a suit and show up at a client. I have some "dressy" clogs, but they're really not making the right impression for clients, especially if I wear them with a dress. Ugh.

Marie,

Do you have a favorite brand/designer for shoes? I live in the outback of Ohio and we have crap for shopping. It's hard to find moe than 1 or 2 pairs of high end shoes.

I hate heels and don't ever want to wear them again. I wear Merrell shoes and that is good enough for me other than my Birkenstocks. Of course, I do not wear dresses either just pant suits!

Michele:

Brands I have had particular luck with (my foot is very narrow) include Franco Sarto, Nine West, Atienne, and Anne Klein (big splurge but they feel sooooo good). Franco Sarto in particular put out some great looking heels that are comfortable and not so unbalanced as some other brands. (My every day black shoes are almost invariably a Franco Sarto.) Check out zappos.com. I usually buy there (price break and they have a better style selection) although I do try shoes on when I'm in the store just to get a feel for the fit.

Good luck and tell me what you buy!!! I love shoes!!

Wearing high heels is bad for your calves, and it can shorten that muscle if you wear them too much. They can also throw off your balance ever so slightly and put pressure on your knee and hip joints. Why do some men think they are sexy? Why do some women?

I wouldn't worry about not being able to wear heels. There are so many cute flat shoes around.

I love wearing heels, but I do have problems with certain brands. For example, Nine West shoes always hurt my feet no matter what size I buy. However, Enzo Angiolini (sp?) shoes are comfortable to me, and a former co-worker told me brands are owned by the same parent company (I've never checked this out so don't quote me.). Kenneth Cole shoes are usully pretty comfy as are Bandolino shoes. I also like Gianni Bruni, Antonio Melani, Franco Sarto for work and church, and BCBG and Nina for special occasions. Have you tried Easy Spirit? I have a few pairs of Easy Spirit shoes that I mainly wear when I know I'm going to do a lot of walking, and they're extremely comfortable. I hope you find a comfortable pair. There's nothing worse than an uncomfortable pair of shoes. I won't wear them if they hurt, and I almost always wear heels -- even when grocery shopping!

Good luck,
Pamela

I live in heels b/c I'm so short. They must be 2" minimum (except in summer when I wear flat sandals w/dresses). What makes your feet hurt is that the ball of your foot is bearing your entire body weight instead of the whole foot. But wearing them day in & day out over the years, I guess I've adjusted.

I actually have more of a problem with flat shoes, especially sneakers. I have no arch at all & my feet cramp up with flats b/c usually they have high arch insets. I cut out the arches whenever possible.

Diane, I am LMAO at your comment about fitting your toes into pointed shoes. Pointed shoes are made longer, so really your toes should reach a spot that is not too narrow for them. One of the things I do w/pointed shoes is go a half size up, they're much more comfortable when you have that extra room.

The most comfortable brands I wear are Donald J. Pliner & Stewart Weitzman (these are fabulous shoes, stylish, great quality, and unbelievably comfortable--a little pricey but sometimes you can find them for >$100 on ebay).

ETA: you can find Pliner & Weitzman at Zappos too.

Nancy, Aerosoles also has its own website (www.aerosoles.com). And I agree they are very comfortable--I have some great casual boots I bought from them, on sale for $49, & I wore them almost every day this winter. They're still in good enough shape for next winter too (although I think they might need to be deoderized :p ).
