Why can't I jump rope?

I've tried to turn my routine into one that's very martial arts & boxing oriented, but I just cannot for the life of me jump rope! I've been practicing for 3 months now & I'm still doing the double hop for each turn of the rope. Whenever I try to speed it up I might get in 3 rotations before I trip over the rope. I'm still using a weighted rope b/c I don't think I can do anything at all w/a speed rope.

I'm extremely uncoordinated, def. have 2 left feet, but I figured if I tried hard enough & practiced long enough I'd pick it up. I guess I was wrong b/c I'm so frustrated I'm ready to give up. I'm thinking no one can be a true boxer without jumping rope, so I guess I'll just have to be a psuedo-boxer.

I suggest continuing to speed up, even if you trip. Eventually you'll start clearing the rope and timing it well, and you will trip less and less. In addition, try not to jump too high (almost everyone does that in the beginning). That throws off your timing, and it's unnecessary ~ you don't need much space to clear the rope.

It took me a few weeks, but most of that time was spent tripping and getting smacked in the back of my head with the rope as it came around. I stuck to it, and now I jump really well. I can even do a little bit of footwork.

Hang in there. It's worth learning! :)

Laura,

I have jump snap the ropeless jump rope because I for one, do not have high enough ceilings to jump rope in the house. Check it out, it may be just what you need.

LOL Laura I make my bootcampers jump rope all the time. I mean ALL THE TIME. Thank God I don't have to jump with them!!! I'm a complete double jumper too. I do know that I've done single jumps a couple times, almost without meaning to. I don't know how I did it!! I had to relax once I realized it mid-jump and focus just on my breathing to keep it up.

I actually think maybe starting slower would help; resting instead of double hopping and swinging the rope around a tad slower, just to get a feel for the rhythm required with a single hop. Just an idea.

It's something about my hand-eye coordination. I've tried slower but somehow I just cannot get my feet into the same rhythm as my hands. Weird huh? I seem to remember being a very good jumper when I was a kid. Now I couldn't do it to save my life.

But the double jump/single turn still gets my HR in the 160s, which isn't too shabby. :p

Laura I didn't even know such a thing existed--right now I do it in my garage b/c like you, my basement ceilings are too low. I will def. check it out, thanks! :)

LauraMax - Check out the clips from Buddy Lee jump rope seminars on the CrossFit site. They helped me alot...I'm even getting into double unders.

One of my biggest problems was that my rope was too long! I think the Intro clip shows how to properly size your rope. It makes a big difference.

ETA - Once I sized my rope right, I had no problems with it hitting the ceiling in my gym...which is only about 7' 3".

I think a big chunk of the problem is the ropes. I was hanging with a kid at work yesterday and he was jumping rope outside. He was having all kinds of trouble and he's 23 and fit. His "rope" was plastic and bent all over the place, as was the one I had all kinds of trouble with at home, which is why I gave up on it. When most of us were kids we used actual ropes, which are weightier and can, thus, cut through the air more efficiently. You didn't have to fight the rope. But these newer one's are just too flimsy and light to move cleanly so you end up having to use so much force just to get them to move. I wish they'd bring back REAL jump ropes.

Hi,

Have you tried any of Micheal Olajide's boxing/ jump rope Dvds? I used his workouts and my jump roping skills greatly improved

I have the same thing.
If I tried to jumprope (even if I could...not sure if I can!), I'd be ripping a low-hanging light out of my ceiling!
