Whole grain/ whole wheat bread help

Can any of you recommend a good whole wheat or whole grain bread brand? That stupid corn syrup thread got me looking at my whole wheat bread. Why is practically everything that is labeled "healthy" around here full of so much crap? ACK! I bought a loaf of organic whole wheat by the Vermont Bread CO and it's leaving a weird taste in my mouth. Blech. I hate wasting money. Okay, suggestions please :)

Debbie,
You'll probably get the Ezekial brand bread recommended to you, and it's great bread, healthy and delicious. It is made from sprouted whole grains and baked at lower temps to preserve the bioactivity of the sprouted grains. However, it can be a bit pricey and chewy if you're not used to it. You also have to keep it in the fridge/freezer.
I can't use it b/c it has malted barley syrup in it, and one of the best supermarket chains in upstate NY (Wegmans) has their own brand of "health" breads that DH and I enjoy, or we buy "Monk's Bread" which is great, all natural ingredients and has been around for quite some time.
Most of the time though, I just make my own. With my KitchenAid mixer it takes me about 5 minutes to get all ingredients out, 2 to measure and dump, 10 to knead, then it's just babysitting the rising dough, and baking.
I've experimented with quite a few recipes and my favorite incorporates the new "ultragrain" or "white-whole wheat" flours that are out now. With a mix of whole wheat, flax, oat bran, oatmeal, and vege-boost protein powder. I make several batches on a weekend, cut and freeze, and then am set for several weeks. Much easier on the budget:)

I'm curious after reading the threads on high fructose corn syrup in products. Doesn't anybody make their own bread anymore? No one has suggested that solution that I can remember. With today's bread machines it's easy and you know what's going into your bread. We use our bread maker a lot.

Big problem w/ home made bread - it's way too good, and I eat too much of it. I stopped making it! The bread maker sits by its lonely self on the pantry shelf unused.

I don't have a bread maker nor the desire to get started with that right now, especially with a toddler. Maybe in the future I will. Where can you buy ezekiel bread? Trader Joe's or something like that?

Mattea-

What is the brand of the bread that you purchase from Wegmans? I shop here weekly, I would like to pick it up.

Debbie- My Kroger & Randalls (regular old chains) carry it in refrigerated section of Health Foods area- small area but there none the less! Its with the AMYS Products & Soy products in my area

I make my own bread. I can put in it anything I want. It can be from a machine, to hand made. I prefer handmade. I haven't bought a loaf of bread for years. Everything in it is healthy. My specialty is sourdough brown bread. Yummmmm!:9 In my picture trail, you will find under intrrests, pictures of sourdough bread.

The only thing about homemade bread though, is it takes a little more time and most working people don't have that.

I just tried some of that Ezekiel bread, found it at Kroger in the freezer section, wouldn't have thought to check there, it is really good and filling. I like it toasted with some Peanut Wonder (just tried that stuff too, pretty yummy) on it. :9

Cakebaker,

That's EXACTLY what I was going to say! I used to make my own bread, every weekend, no bread machine, just my own hands. It was soooo good that when it came out the oven, DH and I would eat practically a whole loaf within an hour. I swear, in two months, we'd both racked up about five pounds each!

I'm considering doing it again. I loved the kneading and the smell and how good it tastes right out of the oven and...oh, man, I'd better not!

It's great exercise for the hands and grip as well!

I know I found many good whole Wheat breads at Trader Joes. I even bought whole wheat hamburger rolls. I, too, made bread by hand, but ate it all when it came out of the oven. It was like cake to me!

Debbie, I agree that Ezekiel is good bread, but I also like Pepperidge Farm Natural Whole Grain Breads -- there's more than one kind and I alternate between the 100% WW and the 9 Grain. They don't contain any HFCS, however they have 3g of sugar per serving from unsulphured molasses and raisin juice concentrate. They also contain 2% or less of sugar and/or honey--a negligible amount IMO.

ETA it's a great sammich bread and I know how you like your sammiches -- lol!

Hi Jennifer,
They are smaller loaves, one comes in a White/Orange wrapper and is 100% Whole Wheat Bread. A few years ago, before I became vegan, I used to also purchase the Omega 3 bread (I think it might have been 12 Grain? Seven Grain?), but it has a fish oil supplement in it.

I also have a bread machine, but actually found it more trouble and time than just using the KitchenAid. And yes, if I do anything "fancy" with it, the bread is almost too good to not eat right away, but if it's the basic whole wheat, and you slice and freeze as soon as it is cool enough, you can keep it out of the peanut and your mouth, LOL!

oooh micheleemoo, you know me! ha. I will check out the pepperidge farm today at the store. Thanks!

FYI Arnold's is the same as Brownberry--they're the same company. If you can't find Arnold's Double Fiber 100% Whole Wheat Bread, look for Brownberry Double Fiber 100% Whole Wheat Bread. It's the exact same bread.

Mattea,

Your homemade bread sounds AWESOME!! Would you be willing to share the recipe you use with us? I would love to try it out instead of buying bread at the store.

Thanks!!!
