Who recommended "The Outlander Series"

I was at the Used Bookstore and they had the whole series in some but when I saw how "BIG" they were I instantly hesitated and left without them. Whomever has read this series could you give a little insight to this series w/o giving to much away.

I am basically wondering is it drawn out a lot, what style of writing do they use, are there a lot of characters to remember?

Thank you very much.

I read the 1st one, it was ok, but it didn't leave me jumping for the next one. A decent amount of characters, but nothing too complex. Some political intrigue, romance, a bit of loose history, the writing style is easy to read. The Highland character talk in a highland accent, so that is a bit odd until you get used to it. I read it in 3 or 4 days. I'm pretty sure I read the sequel sometime ago, before I knew it was a sequel to something, and I recall being a tad confused, but that's prob bc it was a sequel and I didn't know it. I may reread the 2nd one. As a whole, it was a decent book, but not on my re-read list.

ETA - I wasn't the original recommender - I picked up after reading about it here

I wasn't the one who recommended them either, but I will do so now. I have read the whole series and am eagerly awaiting the seventh one, " An Echo in the Bone". Due out 9-22.

Obviously I think they're excellent.

They are written in 1st person so if that turns you off, might want to get OUTLANDER for startes before jumping into the whole series.

I've read each and every one of them and love them! I'm a sucker for history and sci-fi, and alternate realty (every see how thick the Harry Turtledove books are? :)) and when I accidentally discovered Diana Gabaldon I was hooked.. Yup, they are thick, but rich in detail - she's a university professor, what else would you expect :).

I'm not much on the Lord John series that she has written as a spin off from one of the characters in her Claire/Jaime series, but that's just personal opinion.

I got the whole series, thinking that since so many people loved it, the books would be a good read. I have been on the second book forever. Can't seem to get through with ease like the first one. I need to push myself so I can start reading the third book, maybe it will be better, if not I'm not going to waste anymore of my time on them.

I read the first one and wasn't that keen on it and it took me years to get to the second and from then on I was hooked! The last book though, I just didn't have time to get through that long of a book, so I got the CD's from the library and WOW! I loved listening to it. The woman doing the reading was excellent. Accents and proper pronounciation of things I never would have pronounced right. It made the book really come alive and if I can get it, I plan to "read" the next book the same way. So, glad to hear that they have announced a date for it. I hadn't heard that.

I was totally hooked on this series and found myself up until all hours of the night reading! I would go and get the next book when I still had 200 pages left in the book I was reading! You know sometimes I think it has alot to do with when you're reading and how much time you have. If I was reading it right now it would take me a while as I don't have the time to dedicate to it and maybe I wouldn't be as hooked. Nah, I would still be hooked! But when I read it, I was committed and leading their lives with them! (Crazy huh?) I read a ton of books and this is still one of my top all time favorite series.

I love books that have well developed characters and are not so short that everything is wrapped up in 200 pages. I absolutely love the Outlander series. I have read every book more than once. I adore Jaime and Claire and I am just dying to find out what happens in the next book.

Diana Gabaldon develops her story line well, writes in an easily accessible fashion, creates interesting characters, and meshes several different genres together.

These are my favorite books of all time! I love the website dedicated to the books, too: www.lallybroch.com. I, too can't wait for the seventh book to be released this fall. I actually get to meet Diana Gabaldon next month-can't wait!

Update on my answer for Outlander

I've finished the 2nd book. It did get to be an awesome read. Sometimes, (like Jo says) you need to read a little more at one setting to get into it. It was an awesome book. I'm planing on starting the Voyager (the 3rd book in the series) tonight.

I know I have recommended these books. It may have been me. I'm a sucker for historical romance and sci-fi fantasy as well (although these are more historical - except for the time travel thing). I have read 4 of them, and am working on the 5th. Yes, you do have to sit down and read many pages at once otherwise you get a little lost. I'm really enjoying the series. And yes they are long, but I like big books. More time to savor. :D
