Who drinks a gallon of water...

every day? (remember: 1 gallon = 128 oz) I'm asking because I've seen multiple posts on this and I've read that too much water can cause water intoxication which can lead to coma or even death. Most recommendations for water intake are in the 48-64 oz. range. Is a gallon a water daily truly necessary for optimal health? Are some people drinking 64 oz and thinking that's a gallon? I don't think I could EVER get off the toilet if I drank 128 oz. in a day--my bladder is toy-sized to begin with!

Like Kassia said I don't measure either, but I drink nothing but water all day long. I would be surprised if I got less than a gallon.
And, yes, I pee all the time!

I've worried about this before too. I think that it's if you drink that much in a short period of time - it is creepy to think that you can die from this. Over the course of the day I think that someone is safe though I dont know for sure how much I consume.

I drink a gallon a day, plus more. I live in Vegas, so its very dry here, and I work out and sweat alot. A gallon is just right for me!:7

I used to drink about 100-120 oz. and found over time that was too much for me. I would find that I almost had the feeling of having to go again right after going...very annoying. I cut back to 65-80, but I don't measure exact amounts. I drink water all day long, and spread it out. I also feel much better when I have had my perfect water intake. My skin is also clearer too.;)

I drink close to a gallon a day,especially during my workouts(drink like a horse,LOL)

I have a 1.58 liter water bottle that I just refill out of my filtered sink water atleast twice a day,and most days im on my third refill! And being that there are 3.78 liters in on gallon thats pretty darn close.

The only drawback is-im on the potty all day.But being a SAHM the potty is always availible,LOL;-)

I don't drink water every day. I only drink it when working out. I hate the taste. The only time water ever tastes good is when it comes from the mountains and I am backpacking on a hot, sweaty day.

Most of the time I drink tea, being British, and Izze drinks which are half water, half juice.

Sometimes when working out for a long lifting session, I make up a drink of half water, half pure orange juice and sip that.

I don't feel the need to be drinking sips of stuff all day long. I rather think this would annoy me and if anyone told me I had to do it, I would instantly rebel.

It is possible to get too bloated with liquid you know.

i probably drink at least a gallon a day (although i've never actually thought of it in terms of a gallon). i have a 52 oz. giant tumbler that i got from QT and i drink one whole one when i wake up in the morning (i have found it really gets me going and feeling refreshed) then probably another one while i work out, then at least two more during the day.

thing is, i LOVE water! i would rather drink that than anything else. i do have one caffienated soda a day in the morning to wake me up, but never more than one can a day.

as far as the bladder issue, for me, it doesn't matter if i am drinking my normal amounts or not, my bladder is the size of a pea!

I try to drink 64 ounces of water per day (8 cups) in addition to what I consume while working out. Some days I do, some days I don't. It can be tough for me and often times I have to force it. UGH.

Yeah I think that intoxication from water thing is only if you drink a massive amount quickly. That's what happened to that gal who was participating in a radio show contest some time ago. The contest was to see how much water you could drink w/o going to the bathroom. The contestants where basically chugging bottles of water one right after the other...

I wouldn't worry about this happening under normal circumstances even if you drink a gallon or more a day. :)

Water intoxication is pretty rare...and Wendy is right that it happens if you drink a massive amount rather quickly and don't add in electrolytes. This happened to a girl here in Colorado several years back. She took ecstasy, was really thirsty, drank a ton of water, slipped into a coma, and died. But I think it is most common in marathon runners who are constantly drinking water but may not be adding any electrolytes (the water dilutes the blood, basically).

Water intoxication will not happen to the average person, especially if you are drinking a gallon spread throughout the day and are eating your meals like normal.

I personally have been struggling to get even close to 64oz lately, but I do drink about 1L of peppermint tea on cold days in addition to the water I drink. I figure it may not be water but it's not sweetened or anything so it can't hurt.

Thanks to everyone for replying! It helps to understand the whole water intoxication better. It's interested to see the variety in intake levels and "beverages of choice." I've read drinking more fluids can make your skin look really good too. Will water puff up my wrinkles?? ;) I guess I need to go buy more toilet paper now since I'll be spending all my free time in the bathroom!

Don't forget that other liquids you consume in a day also count towards your total intake (including foods). Personally, I find a gallon of water to be completely unnecessary. If you just like to drink that much that's cool but to spend the day nursing a water bottle while planted to the toidy...pure silliness.

I drink anywhere between 70-80 ounces of water a day, besides the other water I get through food and coffee...:)

If I tried to drink a gallon, I'd be in the bathroom all day! I use a 32oz. water bottle, so I'd guesstimate that I drink somewhere around 64oz. of water a day depending on workouts. This doesn't include coffee, tea, milk, etc.

Dang it Beavs! There goes my excuse for not being able to do laundry, dishes, or feed the kids! :p

I drink when I'm thirsty, and it's water or club soda. I have no idea how much I drink per day and it can vary. When it's hot or I exercise, I drink more because I'm thirstier. I tried to drink the "prescribed" 8 glasses a day, but it only made me lose sleep because I would wake up needing to pee all night long. I figured my sleep was pretty darn important to me and I sleep better now.

Drinking alot of water doesn't make you bloated-it may feel like that at first cause your tummy is so full, but it actually sends a signal to your body to release extra fluids or bloat that it might be holding.

I think it also depends on where you live, I live in the desert with dry air, so I am always "dry" and with the working out, need my water for sure!

When I spend time in San Diego though, I find it more difficult to drink alot of water because its more humid. Does that make sense? I love, love, love water-SmartWater to be exact. And yes, I pee all day!
