Which Medicine Ball???

LAST EDITED ON Dec-04-02 AT 08:22PM (Est)[p]I am wondering about the same thing -- are all medicine balls the same? Like dumbells - hex, neoperene, etc? It IS the weight that matters?

I know stability balls comes in different thickness (of course sizes for varying heights). I heard on the VF forum somebody's kid bust her stability ball with a pencil. Because of that, I think I need a thicker/instructional one... I have to little ones who would just LOVE play with it.

Hi mojolisa!

I just received my medicine ball and stability ball from Fitness Wholesale. The medicine ball is from Power Systems called Power Ball and it is orange like Cathe's. The stability ball is a Thera Band 55cm ball, also orange(red) like Cathe's in the pictures. The med ball was $37.95 and the stability ball was 18.95. I also bought a cool air pump for 19.95.

I haven't pumped up the big ball yet, but I can tell you the 8 lb medicine ball is going to be a WORKOUT!!:)

Can't wait for those DVD's!!!

Hi there mojolisa,

Cathe posted a while back that she will be using an 8# medicine ball, and that a 6# medicine ball will do as well, and that it will be made of rubber(rather than leather).
As far as stability balls go, it depends on your height, they come in 45cm, 55cm, 65cm, 75cm. I am 5 foot 8 inches and have a 65cm ball, which is suitable for anyone 5 foot 5 " and above, as long as your knees are at a 90 degree angle when sat on the ball, then it is classed as OK.

Hi Donna!

Let us know how you like the med ball. I want to order one but I'm not sure of the poundage. I found a 9 pound md ball on ebay. I wonder if that would be too heavy? 8 seems like it would be a killer!

Kali :)

I too want to know how you like this brand. The only place cheaper I saw one was at Wal mart & all they had was a 10lb, which I am sure will be to heavy. I will wait until the tapes comes out & try it with a dumbell before I spend any more money on eqpt. Karen

Hi, I haven't really tried any exercises with the medicine ball yet, but I did try holding it in my hand out to the side (which I saw demonstrated in a magazine) and it was quite heavy. I wouldn't go with the 9 or 10 pound ball yet, until we find out how Cathe is going to have us use them. But as far as quaulity goes, it is very sturdy, hard rubber, like a basketball. It's a good one.

Also, both balls shipped within the same week I ordered them!

They have the same medicine ball at www.centuryfitness.com The price is $17.99 but I am not sure what they charge for shipping. These balls don't bounce but I recall Cathe saying that it doesn't need to.

I got the 10-pound med ball from WalMart for $16.13. I am going to work up to it using my 5 and 8-pound hand weights first!

All, thanks for your comments. I have some Firm and FitPrime tapes, and they use the medicine ball. This is what first got me thinking about buying one. Now that Cathe's using it too, I have even more incentive to get one.

Since I didn't have the ball, I used 5lb hand weight when I did those other tapes. In general this works fine, but sometimes the angle they hold the ball is a little different from how I hold my weight. For example, they have their palm facing up, and the ball resting in the palm of their hand. I hold the weight with my palm facing up, but since I have to grip the weight (to prevent it from rolling out of my hand) I feel like this is more of a bicep strengthening exercise. Whereas holding the ball seems to force you to use more muscles in your arms and shoulders. I don't know if this is 100% accurate, but it just seems that way to me.

There are other exercises, moving the ball from your left side to right while alternating lunges, and some overhead stretches where the shape of the ball is more conducive to getting into the correct position. All these moves can be done with hand weights, they just require slight modifications.

I don't have to worry about anyone poking my ball, so I may just bite the bullet and order the 6lb ball. I know the 10lb would be too heavy for me. I build muscle very easily, so I'm only interested in toning the muscles I have - not creating new ones. Also, it doesn't bother me if the ball doesn't bounce. In the FitPrime video Jac bounces the ball, but I workout on carpet, so I won't be bouncing anything. The only thing I'm curious about is how to 'add air'. I wonder if this will require my purchasing an additional pump.

I'll let you know how I like my new 6lb medicine ball!!!

Yes, Lisa, please do. I would much rather pay $11.00 plus shipping than $38.00 plus shipping. My budget is tightening (heating costs!)

Hi,

Last night I went to #####'s sporting goods store and found the 8lbs, TKO medicine ball for $21.42, wow! I remember that last year I wanted to buy them and were very pricey and of course I couldn't resist buying it for that kind of money yesterday, but I'm thinking of going back later and perhaps buying a 6lbs, just for variety or for those "light weight" days.
I just wanted to let you guys know, so if you have a #####'s sporting goods near you just go and check it out.

Laura.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-02 AT 04:14PM (Est)[p] Dear Laurak, Hi, would you please email me at [email protected] & tell me which store you are talking about? That price is very very good. I do not know why you have been censored, everyone else mentions the names of the store, thanks, karen

Hi Karen!

I think the store Laura is referring to is D-i-c-k's Sporting Goods Store. It is not that she used the name of a store, but THE name of THAT store!! Ha! Does that make sense?
