Where did you find your barbell?

I want to buy a barbell set this Christmas and am having a hard time finding one that is less than 6' long. I'm only 5' tall, so I'd rather have a shorter one. I checked on the Buyers Guide and am really not interested in buying this online (shipping charges).

Has anyone had luck with one of the national retailers?

I looked and looked for this, I didn't want to have a 6foot one and wanted 5 foot or less. ...tried Sportmart, Sports Authority and Play It Again before I gave up and bought online. Can't remember what I paid but finally decided the total price including shipping was something I was willing to pay.

I just ordered one from Amazon and the total was less than $30, which included shipping. I tried pasting the link, but it was really long, so do a search for the 80lb Beginner Weight Set (SET) by Escalade Sports. I haven't received it yet, but I would be happy to tell you more about it when I receive it. My husband's 6' bar was way too long for me too. (He would probably chuckle at that comment!)

I found mine at Wal-Mart. It's 5' or less and weighs about 4 lbs. The bar is one of those that came in two pieces... One end slides into the other, then my husband took it outside and basically beat it on the sidewalk. It's been great. It came with the vinyl-coated weights-- way more than I needed. I think it was $21.

I got mine at play it again sports. I had one that I traded in to them for a straight one that I could use clips on the end so I could change the weights faster it is great now.

Not Tammy, but I also have the troy lite bar (the one Cathe uses). I think it is about 5'. I am only 5 feet tall as well and find this bar works nice. I love the rubber encased weights and the fact you can order 1 1/4 lb. weights as well. I ordered online from fitness1st(I think). It was reasonably priced with shipping.

Good luck,

Elaine

Thanks Elaine! I have the page bookmarked for easy reference when I get my Christmas bonus. So you're a fellow "shorty", eh?

How many risers do you put on your step? I keep mine at the 6" height. Then when she does the step-ups, I put it up to 10" and pile a few old VHS tapes under each corner to make it 12".

how do you know what length of a barbell to buy? i'm a bout 5'8" and still somewhat new to exercising. i grabbed my mom's step that she uses for light physical therapy and saw the still wrapped All Step tape and thought i'd give it a try. I was hooked immediately!!! i love doing the weights, but i don't have a bar. mostly cause i don't know what to look for.

I received mine from Amazon today, and it is the US Weights brand. The bar is about 5' long and it is much better that the one my hubby's uses. His may even be 7', do they come that long? Anyway, it seems great. My only disappointment is that the lightest weight is 8lbs. but I have some 2.5's and 5's already that will fit it OK.

Thanks for your help on this! I just ordered my Troy set from Fitness 1st. (Couldn't wait until Christmas }( ). I can't WAIT for it to come! It's like getting a new toy.

Got the Troy barbell today and just did BBA with it. P.U. it's smelly! But BOY! I'm sure glad to have a barbell again. It really is different than the dumbbells. I wonder if I'll catch a buzz off of the smell...

I found one complete with plate weights for under $30 at Dicks Sporting Goods. I've even seen them at Sears, and I'm sure WalMart or Target will have something now that it's getting close to the holidays.
