when will I feel pregnant?

LHK

How long does it take to go from feeling normal to feeling pregnant? When might the nausea begin?

I am pregnant, and I conceived around Oct 23rd, LNP 10/9/02. So it hasn't been long- 2 weeks, or 4 if you count the way they do on websites. And I still feel completely normal, except my boobs are very very big, for me. (That is to say, I am nearly an A now!) Please tell me if it begins at 6 weeks, or 2 months, or what?
Thanks a lot!

Hello LHK & welcome to the wonderful world of pregnancy!! If you're very fortunate, you may not even experience nausea, or it might get to be incapacitating, you just never know till you get there ;-). Glad you got your doctor's appointment pretty quickly, that's very helpful.

By the way, my breasts (now referred to as the baby bottles) didn't start changing till a couple months in but they've grown a bit now and I can almost fit in to an A cup too, ha! Yeah, I keep teasing my dh that that's the whole reason he wanted me pregnant ;-).

Everybody is different and it seems like there are as many different experiences as there are pregnancies so don't get too caught up with what's "normal". Make sure you get the book What to Expect When You're Expecting and if your husband wants some reading material, The Expectant Father is an excellent book as well. Also, check out:

Great site!! Congratulations, hope you have a wonderful pregnancy!!

Congratulations and welcome!!! I am now 28 weeks pregnant and am feeling VERY pregnant! I know what you mean about wondering when it is really going to seem real. For me, the nausea hit at around 8 weeks if I remember correctly. It was not a violent nausea just a general all-day queasiness and incredible fatigue. My boobs didn't necessarily get bigger that soon (I was already a 34C) but they hurt like heck! Now, they are a 38D already--I am afraid of how much bigger they will get once I near the end and especially when my milk comes in--Oy Vey!! In terms of showing, I am a small, very fit person so I did not begin to really show until around 18+ weeks. Even now, I am not that big and only really look pregnant when I wear certain maternity tops--Naked is a whole other animal though!! Try to enjoy every stage of it whether good or bad--it is all worth it especially when you have your first ultrasound and can actually see the life in you and again when the baby gives you a roundhouse kick for the first time!

Congratulations, LHK!! I didn't feel pregnant until about 20 weeks. I never experienced any nausea -- just food aversions (coffee, oatmeal and blueberries mostly) which began at about 6 weeks -- and just felt like I was fat! I put on 15 pounds during my first trimester and looked kind of chunky. By 20 weeks I was finally starting to look pregnant instead of fat, and I was starting to feel the first flutters of my baby moving.

My daughter was born by C-section on August 14, so she is 3 months old today! Sometimes it still doesn't seem real and I can't believe she actually grew inside of me.

Thanks for the welcomes! So maybe I should just feel lucky that I'm still feeling normal? Who knows. I keep taking pregnancy tests since I stocked up on so many, and every day that second line gets darker and darker :) That makes me happy.
This afternoon I'm going to the Dr, so I can't wait to talk with her! I hope she doesn't put me on prenatal vitamins. I eat very well (have been craving, or at least wanting things like milk, squash, carrots, cereal, etc) and take a women's multi that has exactly what the authors of "What to Expect" recommend. (Yes I have this book!) (DH was calling our baby his little grain of rice!)
Wow I wonder if I'll grow into a B cup! That would be something. I'm pretty small too, thanks to Cathe. She helped me lose 14 lbs of fat last year so I am currently 119 lbs, size 2 going into this. I will keep you all posted as to what doc says and if and when I do feel sick! Keep the wisdom coming- I appreciate it! This is our first, obviously- DH and I are 30 and married 5 yrs...so the relatives have been waiting with baited breath!
Lisa

I was short of breath immediately! Then fatigue set in. By about 6 or so weeks, I felt a little nauseu and food cravings/aversions. I experiences no breast changes. Maybe now at the end of the first triemster they *might* be a very little bit bigger. (34B) But I am glad because I can only tolerate the most expensive, comfortable bras and would hate to have to start replacing them already. If you feel great--enjoy it and don't worry. Gina

Hello ladies! I'm just checking in to say that now I am 5 weeks along and still not feeling anything! Friday's Dr visit was good- they confirmed the pregnancy with a blood test and congratulated me! I guess I'll try to feel lucky for now, and just wait and see! I hope the sickness doesn't set in in 2 weeks- we are going to be moving! And we aren't going to "announce" until at least Christmas, so I'll have to pretend I'm fine!

When did you all announce? I have read 2 months, 3 months, even 4. Any opinions?

Thanks, Lisa

Hi Lisa, hope you continue to feel fine, especially during the move! DH & I only told our immediate families, a couple of close friends who already knew we were trying and our bosses at first. We waited until almost the second trimester, week 11 actually to tell everyone else. We were initially planning to "go public" after our first sonogram, which was week 7 but the kid was so incredibly small, much smaller than the doctor thought they ought to be so we held off until we had another look four weeks later. That time, the kid looked great and the doctor was able to take measurements and reassure us that everything looked good so far, what a relief!

In general, I think getting through the first trimester before spilling the beans is a pretty good idea considering your risk of miscarriage drops substantially at that point. Hope all goes well for you three, please keep us updated on your progress :)

FoolofaTook: A sonogram happens at week SEVEN!?! WOW that is awesome! Only two weeks til a sonogram? Really? Holy cow.
Well I'm still feeling perfectly normal, weight is the same, no nausea, etc.
So does the first trimester end after exactly three months? Or is it more complex than that? That would be mid-January for me, I guess. Hmm. DH wants to tell his (big) family at Christmas, and I'd only be 2 months by then. Something to think about.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-19-02 AT 02:31PM (Est)[p]HI, congrats! I think you should let everyone know when you're ready. Everyone is different. I always told immediately (this is my 3rd pregnancy). Although this time maybe instead of tellling hundreds of people within about a one week span we probably only told 20 people. It's always announced when I'm about 5 or 6 weeks at my church so immediately about 700-1000 are "let in" on the good news. My husband is one of the pastors at our church so he announced my pregnancy in the first service unbeknown to me. When I arrived at church for 2nd service people were congratulating me. Obviously we really enjoy letting everyone know early on and I've never let the thought of miscarriage change that(I've never had a miscarriage thank goodness).

Some books say the second trimester begins at week 13 and others say at week 15. It's so confusing. I've just decided to go with the week 15 point (I'll reach that point on Thanksgiving Day)since that would put me at 13 weeks gestation.

I think as sonograms go, it's definitely based on your doctor and other factors. I had a sonogram at about 14 weeks with #2 because I started spotting. I'm going to have my sonogram with this baby right before Xmas. I could be wrong but it seems that in the U.S., at least, many doctors don't give sonograms that early unless you're having problems or they need to date the pregnancy.

HTH,
Valerie
