When to start cleanse?

Okay so after many a post on colon cleansing and much hemming and hawing, I've decided to give it a shot. My DH actually wants to try it too which surprised me to no end! Anyway, the holidays are upon us which means my eating will be far from stellar come the end of this month. The cleanse I am going to try does not demand a spotless diet but ofcourse strongly encourages one that is as healthy as possible. Should we wait to begin this until the New Year or will a few days of cr@ppy eating not be the worst thing in the world?

TIA and sorry if this is TMI for anyone!:)

I think I'd wait until after the holidays myself. Although I am not sure what some bad days of eating would do during a cleanse...??

Hi Carole.

I think the bad eating will cause it to be less effective. That's what I've ready anyway. I don't *THINK* it will do anything horrible like make you sick or anything but I could be wrong....

That does make sense it could be less effective with bad eating...so have a good Holiday season and start in the New year...:D

I'd just wait, too. Enjoy the holidays - eat healthy, but enjoy. Starting a cleansing would just make me uptight.

Thanks ladies! I will wait.

I guess now that I've finally made the decision to do this I am strangely excited about it and can't wait to get started! LOL How wierd is THAT!? :p

Hi Wendy,

I'd also wait til after the Holidays. Otherwise, in my opinion, bad eating in between would defeat the purpose. I tried a cleanse last year and felt great during that time, but if I'd eaten crap in between I don't think it would have been worth it at all.

Best of luck!

If you don't mind my asking...what brand of cleanse did you use?

After lots of looking around I decided on Nature's Secret Ultimate Cleanse. It's 2 bottles of tablets taken a couple times a day, drink alot of water and eat healthy. That's all there is to it. I didn't want anything too involved or too diet restrictive. I already eat reasonably healthy so this shouldn't be difficult for me to adjust to at all. I just have to "clean up" some of the odds and ends in my diet.

I've seen the fasting cleanses and cleanses where you have to change your diet SOOO much that I that I'd be miserable. It's not worth it IMO.

I hope it works. :)

I am going to use it for a week and if it's okay then DH will start. He is afraid to start at the same time for fear of bathroom issues since we only have one in our home. I told him it's not supposed to be harsh so there should be no feeling of emergency involved but he's still nervous...:)

Give yourself some fun time, and wait until after the Holidays.

Janie

The idea is to die young as late as possible

I just got done using that brand of cleanse, and do not worry, you will not be racing to the bathroom at all.
It isn't harsh, its really mild, just sorta regulates you. I used it after my stint with painkillers after my hip surgery. I wanted to give my poor liver and intestinal tract a break!

Oh, and Lainie, its not really the same as a "detox" which usually requires one to "fast" or eat just certain foods for a days at a time. Not my cup of tea. This cleanse is simply capsules you take in the AM and the PM that help move stuff through you and provide liver support as well.

At any health food store, I believe I got mine at the pricey, yet oh so fun to shop at Whole Foods!:)

I certainly do not consider myself an expert on this subject, but I have read a number of books on the subject. The overall view is that the best time to cleanse is in the spring or the fall. Winter is a time to build the body, not take away.

Ann Louise Gittleman has a wonderful book on how to build the body with each season. It is a wonderful resource. She advocates building the adrenals and the kidneys during the winter season.

Cleanses put stress on the body because it takes work to clean out the system. It is good stress, but stress none the less and winter may not be the optinmal time as we need our energies to fight off those winter bugs.

Just my two cents worth. Good luck on whatever you choose.

Hi Wendy! I think it is great you and your husband decided to cleanse. You two will feel awesome when it's all done. I am actually in the health and wellness industry, and the cleanse is one of my top 5 sellers. I recommend you wait until after the holidays, because you need to eat clean. The whole purpose of the cleanse is to starve off the bad bacteria in the intestines and replace it with the good, and also cleanse out the toxins in our organs and scrub plaque off our intestinal walls. I know there are a lot of types of cleanses out there, but if it's a good one you should fill like a million bucks when finished. Have fun cleansing!

Happy Holidays!

Melissa

Interesting post! I must have missed all those other ones. As I was reading, I was wondering what exactly does it DO for you. Sounds like its purpose is to remove bacteria and toxins? I'll go research those previous threads.

IA -- though I don't know much about the whole process -- that a post-holiday cleanse would seem to make the most sense. Lord knows toxins are about the only thing goin' in the piehole these days. :)

Hi Tneah.

Thanks for the info on the cleansing product I purchased. I have no issues w/my *ahem* "schedule" normally and if I do get "backed up" then I just buy some Fiber One cereal and drink more water and I'm right back in the game after a couple of days. I want the cleansing process to do MORE for me then what some fiber one cereal is capable of. Should I look into a stronger product for myself perhaps??

TIA! :)

Hi Cathy.

Part of what a cleanse is supposed to do is clean/rid your intenstines of the built up waste that has not made it out of your body since your last cleanse. In my case that would be 35 years worth! It is also meant to rid your digestive tract of toxins and bad bacteria.

Depending upon the product you buy the process can take from a week to 3 months to complete from what I've read. There are lots of products on the market and some of them can be pretty involved as well as pricey. Some are stronger then others which can cause "emergency" bathroom runs which I do not want. I chose one that was not expensive, easy to use and was NOT harsh. I want it to be effective though so I will probably have to use it for a while. I am sure if you use something stronger, it won't take as long to complete.

HTH! :)

Hi Melissa.

Thank you for your insight on this! Since folks around here have been posting about cleanses over the past year or so there have been many a debate on the safety and true effectiveness of the process. I gather you find it to be both safe and effective?

I am going to wait until January to do this. I started practicing drinking the required amounts of water yesterday. LOL I missed the mark by about 13 ounces y'day. Gotta try to do better!;) Thankfully I have a pretty good diet already but do love to indulge in the occassional "treat". This process will force me to cut those indulgences out and stay on the "straight and narrow" for a while. I am hoping this will have noticable positive effects on the "outside" as well as the "inside"!

Take Care!

Wendy,

Just curious- What type of cleanse are you doing?

Keep us posted and let us know how it works out for you.
