When an Athlete is Injured...

Cathe: is it better to keep exercising "around" the injury such as DebbieH did during her elbow crisis and I am trying to do with this tailbone injury--or not exercise at all? I found I cannot do high impact anything; cannot do Pilates because of the roll-ups directly on the injury spot: but I can do low impact "wienie workouts", and upper body --some. Some no impact step. But, forget my advanced level workouts--what do you say? "Some or none?"

Hi Murph!
I just broke my tailbone in January and I was told that I could do whatever exercise I could tolerate. The doctor told me that the tailbone would heal well no matter what I did, so I just found workouts that didn't hurt. For me, that was the stationary bike and stairstepper (I guess the fracture was low enough that I could still sit on the bike fairly comfortably). I was able to do some lower body floorwork as well. In fact, sometimes my tailbone actually felt better after a workout - maybe because of the increased blood flow?
Anyway, my nonprofessional opinion from personal experience would be to continue exercising with your "wienie workouts" until your tailbone heals - hopefully soon!!

Erica; you are a doll..

Just the words I needed. I hope to meet you this summer--you're close to HB and DEB H in Akron, aren't you?!

Hi Murph!

I'm north of the Akron area - it takes me a little over an hour to get to Akron. I wish I was closer to Debbie and HB - they have so much fun together!!
Looking forward to meeting you this summer and hope that your tailbone is improving!

RE: Hi Murph!

I'll bake you some cookies...tell me what kind you like. Now you HAVE to come.;-)

Let's hear it for weanie workouts...

Hi,

I just had to respond to your post. I too have been injured for about a month now. I have either been resting or doing workouts at about half power. My knee seems to be out of whack but my husband (an orthopaedic surgeon) and a MRI have not helped figure out what ails me :-hmmm !! Next week I go to the next city for a second opinion - how embarassing! But, hey, it's my husband's idea.

Anyway, I've found that doing something is better than nothing. Instead of one rest day a week, I rest every other day. And - funny thing - I was able to ride a 70k bike ride two weeks ago with no problem. Odd!!

All the best to you in your recovery...

Joanna

thanks, crowd!

HB: you bad girl! No cookies!!:-rollen
Erica; How long did it take before you felt back to normal? I'm finishing two weeks now.
Joanna: that's a riot. Doing family work is tough, though!!-)

Murph...

My tailbone felt pretty good after 3 weeks I think. I remember it got worse before it got better and I was very discouraged, but I suddenly started feeling better very quickly. But, I'm sure recovery time varies a lot depending on the injury. When I broke my ankle several years ago, the doctor told me it would take a few weeks to heal and it took a full year - I thought I would never walk without pain again.
Are you feeling any better after two weeks?
Erica

Umm, yes

I felt good enough today to ride Echo again. but, when i do high impact anything or try a Pilates roll up-that is a negative, captain. I think 3 weeks will do it. i am going to stay in Wienie World again this week because I sure do not want to wreck this thing by doing too much too soon. Thanks for asking...

Akron

Hi Erica

Sorry I have to interrupt here - I live in Kent and would love to meet some fellow Cathe fans! Do you guys ever get together?

Best Wishes,
Angie

Hi Angie!

I used to live in Stow - right next to Kent! Debbie H. and HB met me at Summit Mall last summer and we had a lot of fun. HB took us on a powerwalk that gave me sore shins for days!! We were scheduled to meet at Aurora Farms Outlets after that, but I had to cancel due to unexpected out of town visit. I think we are planning on getting together again in the summer (July?) when Murph will be in the Akron area. We'd love to meet you!!

RE: Hi Angie!

Yup--I'm coming out to Akron in July. Deb H and I will coordinate dates around her new "arrival." She and I will finalize dates around mid June. Love to have you join our small Cathe fest if you can...talk, eat, ...

RE: Still here

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this site and have never posted anywhere before. Please forgive me if I goof up! I too am wondering about exercising around an injury. I've been working out since Vol 4 of the Firm tapes but am new to Cathe since March of this year. I love her workouts! The past years I have exercised 6-7 days a week alternating weight work with cardio tapes.Anyway, this week I was doing Strong Legs, I loaded up too heavy on my barbell.Dumb Dumb Dumb! I injured my right pectoral muscle on the release, but didn't notice any pain until about 4 hours later, the Delayed onset thing... I just wondered if any of you, the educated crowd, ever experienced this type of injury and if you continued to do aerobics in working around it.
Thanks for all your advise.

Hi and Welcome--

even though this is Cathe's forum--she's busy right now making new tapes for us. So, since I started this thread, I'll say that most of us exercise AROUND NOT THROUGH the injury. That is, if it's "good pain"--okay--if it's not, DON'T DO IT. And we constantly encourage and advise one another around here, so feel free to "whine" to us anytime. On pecs, specifically--I'd say you're almost in the same boat as me except on top. Do low impact step, low impact aerobics, ab work--anything that doesn't hurt.
