I have a few I give to every year. Always breast cancer research, Habitat for humanity, the local shelters, and I have a passion for 2 local safe homes for women escaping domestic violence. I'd like to find another that I could give time or funds to that go directly to the folks intended. I would love to hear your thoughts....

Very soon after hurricane Isabel flooded our area several years ago, the Red Cross had set up a local school with shelter, clothes and food. The people I met were organized, caring, wonderful people. Even better, they also welcomed pets. Since then my husband and I have sent them an annual donation.

Another "vote" for Habitat for Humanity and the Red Cross, plus our local community kitchen and homeless shelter. We also donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, for research (my nephew has CF). Thanks for bringing this up -- we've been thinking about other avenues of giving, so it's interesting to see what other people are supporting.

Mine are already on your list. I give to St. Jude's as well. I also leave room for the random person I might meet who's down and out. Not tax deductible, however.

Oh, I forgot. Your local chapter of the United Way. They help out in so many ways. Your money can be assigned specifically to your community.

I always donate to CHOP. Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. Now That I have moved to Indiana I am also donating to RILEY.

Any charity that helps animals, I give to my local Animal Protective League a lot and am also trying to volunteer more to help them, you'd be amazed at how volunteering a few hours can really help them!

A friend & I sold merchandice of the APL's at the pet adoption this Saturday for 3 hours and were able to raise about $200 in that time & all it cost me was 3 hours, if my friend & I hadn't of helped they would'nt have had enough people to sell for them. :)

My dog and cat each give some money annually to the rescues they came from. Yours truly would love to work with an animal rescue but knows this is not possible because I would get too attached the animals and end up bringing them all home with me. I don't know how other people do it, especially when they foster animals but I thank them tons!

i don't have one set charity but for personal issues i am always donating what and when i can for cancer research,st. judes, and autism charities.

now that my daughter is with a special needs scouting group we are vigorously raising what we can in canned food and monetary donations for the food banks as well as i always make my daughter(who is 8) to drop money in the salvation army bucket when they make their appereance during the holiday seasons. i let her know that helps kids who don't have lot. we don't have a whole lot ourselves but we certainly have alot more then most do so any donations to these kind of causes is something i advocate.

We donate to several, but first and foremost for us right now are our troops. We donate most of our charity dollars to the Wounded Warrior Project, as well as to Operation Uplink, an organization that supplies phone cards and other goods to soldiers.

We always make yearly monetary dontations to the USASPCA, our local NPR station, and our city library. We also donate used clothing to Goodwill and the AmVets, used books to the library (and I will buy used books from the library, as well), and canned goods to our local food bank. At holiday time, we usually adopt a child to give toys and clothes to through the Salvation Army Angel Tree program or Toys for Tots.

We usually add on a different disease charity every year. This year it was MS, but we also have given (and will give again) to the Heart Association and Cancer Society.

I really like Heffer International. You can purchase animals for people in remote villages who use the animals to raise money for and feed their families. Last year my kids gave my parents a flock of chicks -- which were given to a third-world country. The kids love the idea of it too. Check out www.Heifer.org
