What would you have done?

I ordered Pizza today and asked for delivery. I live in a building and was told that I would have to meet the driver downstairs because it was dark outside. I had to pay $2.75 to have the pizza delivered. Once the driver called, I had to get out of my pj's, go downstairs and pick up my pizza. I decided not give a tip because I paid for the delivery and only got the pizza delivered half way. Once I paid and started to walk away, the driver asked me if I was going to give him a tip and I told him No because they only delivered half way.. If he would have come up stairs, I would have tipped him.

I know there was long debate on this last week and some had said they would tip no matter what and others said they would tip depending on the service. I am just wondering what you would all do in this particular situation. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I would like to hear them.

I always tip delivery people, sometimes 15% - 20% especially in bad weather. There was a delivery person killed in my area recently and others attacked which may be why the place you called has the drivers stay outside, maybe for their safety. Drivers are not responsible for their company's policies, though if I were him, I wouldn't have asked you if you were going to tip or not...that's too bold for me.

I definitely would've tipped him. He did bring the pizza to you. You didn't tip because you had to walk down stairs. I disagree with your reasoning. But, like you said, to each her own opinion.

I agree too that he was a bit bold in asking for the tip. I can see where he would've expected one though.

I agree with Tygra. He was probably only following company policy and, let's face it, some neighborhoods just aren't that safe. I don't think that he should have asked about a tip, though.

I lived for several years in a semi-rural area--down a 9-mile narrow, winding road from the small town. Only one of the three pizza places in town would deliver, and it was policy that you had to meet the delivery guy/gal halfway up that 9-mile road "at the fire station." Even though I had to get in my car and drive to the fire station, it was still better than driving all the way into town. And, yes, I tipped the delivery guy/gal because I felt he/she earned it.

another agreement here. sadly, it sounds like it isnt the drivers decision. he was just following orders, and is probably taking the brunt of it from other annoyed customers. i would most likely have tipped, but probably would have looked for another place to order from in the future.

"I live in a building and was told that I would have to meet the driver downstairs because it was dark outside."

At that point I would have cancelled the order.

Thank you everyone for your opinions, I do appreciate it.

After reading your posts, I still don't think I would have done anything different. I still believe that I paid for delivery and only half the job was done.

I normally do not get delivery, the pizza store is just down the street and I usually go and pick it up. I think I will just do that in future.

And I didn't realize that pizza places still charged for delivery. I probably would have ordered from a place that had free delivery (beside the point, I know...)

I would've given him less probably, but still tipped. Unless they do something flat out wrong or inappropriate, something of that nature, I usually tip. We all have to make a living. I think that is kind of gutsy to ask about a tip. Would make me not want to order from them.

I never order from any place that charges for delivery. Once you add the price for delivery plus the tip on top of what the food already costs, I could have eaten twice.
And I am also with Bill, would have cancelled the order when I found out that I had to meet the driver outside because it was too dark out.

I would've probably given a smaller tip as well and would not use that pizzeria again in the future 1) because of the delivery fee (if they're gonna charge a fee, it needs to be delivered to you *on your doorstep*) and 2) because of the rude delivery person.

Two questions: when a delivery fee is charged, what is that for? I mean, who gets it? Is it a built-in tip for the driver?

And not to hijack, but I'm also wondering...what do you guys normally tip someone who's delivering your food to either your home or your car? What about carryout?

Cathy :)
