A new gym opened very close to my home about 4 weeks ago. I went there couple times and the w/o was great but I always had a headache after each time. I smelled cigarette every time but I tried to ignore it and tell myself that is just cannot be possible. Unfortunately it is. This is a huge room divided with "fake” walls, no doors. The receptionist was smoking when I walked out today. Now I know, why I have headache after each w/o.
How can they let their employee to smoke in the gym area? Is there no rule for this?

Does your state have a law about smoking in the workplace? In CA, it is illegal to smoke in the workplace, walls or not.

I cannot stand nor do I tolerate smoke well. Like you I get horrible headaches. I would try to bring it up to management.

i know in Va. the only place i have been around with smokers in the workout place is all the car garages in the country but they smoked in their offices. its a pain for sure. but smoking in the gym???doesn't that make for bad business i would complain and just tell them that it gives you a headache and how can you come to their gym(giving them business)if you can concentrate on your workouts.

I live in PA and I don’t know the law about "workplace smoking".
I usually don't see the manager when I'm there but I will call and complain about the smoking.

How does that motivate someone to be healthy and fit? I would call and complain, maybe try to get your money back.

I'm sure if you mention it to management they'll take care of the problem immediately. I'm sure you're not the only one who notices the smell.

since we are on improper gym etiquette,i was watching fittv's they gym and the owner walked in and smelled greasy food and found one of his trainers eating burger and fries and just went off. he thought it was unfair for that temptation to be there when alot of them that come to lose weight have unhealthy issues with food. just though i mention that.some ppl are just in it for the money and not the passion anymore. really said isn't it

I know you're not supposed to discriminate when hiring people, but I DO know that certain organizations and companies CAN choose to hire only non-smokers based on their line of business. For a health club to hire someone who smokes, and then allow that person to smoke on the premises, is just irresponsible. If she wants to smoke and be unhealthy, then she can do it on her own time and away from people who want to live a healthy lifestyle.

I'd have said something to her directly about her smoking in the "health" club. I have asthma and I'm allergic to smoke and do not want to be around it, especially when I'm working out and breathing heavily. I don't know what I would have said to her, but I'd have said something appropriate for the circumstances...and depending on how she responded to me, things could have gotten REALLY ugly after that.
 
I second Nancy's thoughts--talk to management. You are surely not the only one who is bothered by this.

The irony of the situation is almost amusing--a smoking receptionist at a health club? Please.

I hope I'm not the only one who is bothered by this. And I hope that I'm not the only one member too. I never have seen anybody working out there. I thought that is because it is new facility and others haven't discovered it yet. I was so happy when it opened. It is 5 minutes away from me, very convenient and $25/ month.
You are right Maggie. This is crazy and so unbelievable isn't this?

Nancy- I love when somebody calls me Kris. I will use this from now.
