What tape/dvd to get next?

I have been doing Cathe's "How to get ready for your Wedding" tape faithfully since Jan.28th. I promised myself if I got through until March working out five days a week that I would reward myself with a new workout. I really like the step work and the weight lifting, but don't enjoy a lot of jumping around if I can help it. What do ya think? What should I try next? I don't have any of her other workouts.

Hi. I was wondering if you considered the step routine in the wedding video to be too much jumping?? As far as jumping goes, Cathe does have some videos that are similar in the "jump factor" to the wedding video and some that are definitely higher. My suggestion would be to get Step Heat or Step Max, and possibly even Cardio Kicks for some non-step variety. Some of the moves in CK may be too jumpy, but can be easily modified. As far as strength training goes, I'd suggest another total body workout. Either Maximum Intensity Strength for a more slow, heavier weight workout or Power Hour which moves a bit quicker with slightly lighter weights. Power Hour is one of my favorites. I'd say her "jumpier" videos would be Step Works, Rythmic Step, Interval Max and Maximum Intensity Cardio. Just my two cents though!

I don't consider the jumping in the wedding video too much. I did the firm for a while before this and really got tired of all the jumping and plyometrics (yick). But, the wedding video, I like, it is fun! I am still working on that ricochette move there, but other than that am having fun! I love the weight workouts and the step workouts!

With the all in one, how do you work your workouts? Are these like the firm where you do it all at once, or two separate workouts? I understand you alternate step and weight workouts with the wedding video, that is what I have been doing. Just wondered how I would work my week with all in one's. I am really enjoying my Cathe workout and I have already lost one jean size!! ( yipeee!)

Thanks!

Megan, I would get Step Heat for cardio, and for strength, move straight ahead to Pure Strength. All her strength workouts have a reputation for being tough, don't let that stop you, just do what you can. I feel the Pure Strength series is less intimidating because you split it up over three days (ex-mon-wed-fri) instead of killing yourself in one day, which can be very discouraging when the routine is new to you. The other thing is, you will have more delayed onset muscle soreness from MIS or PH, which can get in the way of sticking to a routine if you're new to it. They're all good workouts and all provide something important, but I heartily suggest Pure Strength as a sequel to the wedding vid. Just my experience. I know you're not a rookie! Kath

You might like Power Max, if I remember correctly, there aren't any plyometrics in this one. It's tough - don't get me wrong - but you mentioned you didn't like the plyo work from the Firm. Cathe doesn't combine weights and aerobics like the Firm. However, she has circuit workouts where you do aerobic segments (pretty high intensity too) and then move to weights, then back to aerobics (step, hi/lo etc). The CTX series uses this method. So does Body Max like Bobbi suggested. Circuit Max too. But she doesn't combine weights & aerobics like the Firm does.

Cardio Kicks is a fabulous workout that is done completely on the floor (no step). It's really fun & challenging

CTX is extremely popular on this forum! It's a lot of fun, lots of variety, and quite effective. Do a search, you'll find lots of info

Hmmmmm that cross train express is looking mighty interesting...:>) Do you get enough weight work with that? And since there are six workouts do you do each workout once a week Mon-Sat?

Yes!!

I'd highly recommend the CTX Series! It is so much fun. You get a combo of Hi/Lo, Step & Kickbox on the different cardio segments. There are 6 different tapes in all. Each one has a body part (strength) segment at the end of each cardio, with the exception of the 6th. tape which is devoted entirely to LEGS! (& LEGS it works! Whew!) The series is designed that you can do it many ways, but doing it 6 days a week works very well. That gives you a day off to rest. Have fun choosing. Let us know what you decide!:7

Forgot!!

Yes, you get enough weight work with the series. It is deceiving how hard 10-15 minutes of weight work can be! I love the weight work section and I consider myself an advanced lifter. Go for it!

Hi Momof6,
I'd definitely recommend CTX. I got it and I really like how the cardio is varied (kickbox/step,floor aero.) and I combine it with treadmill running too. Lots of times I do 20 min. of treadmill and then one of the 20 min. CTX aerobic sessions, for a varied 40 min. cardio. Or 20 min of one CTX and then 20 min. of another. I get knee problems if I do too much of the same thing for cardio. The weight work is good too(one body part per day) but if you're concerned about not getting enough you could always tack on a couple of your own exercises since the tapes are fairly short (all under 1 hour, I think).

By the way, you have SIX KIDS??? How do you do it? I have a lot of respect for you! What are their ages? I have a 2 yr. old and 1 yr. old (13 mos. apart) and there are days I think I am just going to go nuts. I go back & forth between one and the other all day long. Then around dinnertime the whining kicks in and I just want to scream!!! We do have lots of fun too, but I don't have to explain to you how exhausting it can be! So I usually work out at 5:00 am. You should be proud that you have found the time to work out regularly! Good luck with choosing your new workout - I'm sure you'll love it if it's one of Cathe's!

I definitely think I am going to go with the CTX series on dvd. Thanks so much for all the advice!

Yes, I have six kids. I have an 11 year old daughter, an almost 10 year old daughter, a 7.5 year old son, and a 5 year old son, then a 3.5 year old daughter, and last but not least a 9 month old daughter. We definitely keep busy! I remember those days when I had just the two little ones, having a couple of older kids really does help. You get an extra set of hands! :>) Lately I have been working out in the late afternoon while the kids watch a few of their tv programs in our "playroom". It does get to be pretty difficult, though, if my exercise runs long, so I look forward to a little shorter workout with the ctx, then I think I will supplement with my recumbant bike! :>)
