I just bought Carly Simon's Let the River Run off of iTunes. I've always loved the song since I heard it on the move Working Girl. For some reason, I find it so empowering. What's your song?
I'm not sure if it's empowering, but I absolutely love And I Am Telling You I'm not Going from Dreamgirls, but the Jennifer Holliday version. It's the best for just sheer belting-outedness (yes, that's a word).
"My song" changes all the time. The ones that I always come back too, though, are "Lounger" by Dogs Die in Hot Cars, "Radio Radio" and "What's So Funny 'bout Peace, Love, & Understanding" by Elvis, and "Swallowed by the Cracks," by David & David. After seeing The National last night, I think "Mr. November" and "All the Wine" will be on a constant rotation for a while!
Music is such a big part of my life that it is hard to narrow this one down but whenever I am having a bad day or go through a bad break up ect PJ Harvey's Rid of Me CD makes me feel strong again.
Not to get off subject but I am jealous that you got to see The National last night. I got invited to go see them about a month or so ago but it was around finals time so I basically had to stay holed up in my room studying all weekend.
Jacque...it was a GREAT show. They have been the opening act for the R.E.M. tour and they seemed happy to be able to play encores, since, as an opening act, they don't get to do that. They came back THREE times. They're off to Europe now, but, if you ever get a chance, check them out live. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Here's a review (and this guy is wrong about the number of encores; they played "Mr. November" in the second one and came back for a third. -- hey, I had only one beer; I know of what I speak!)http://www.last.fm/event/582772/reviews
Some songs that "inspire" me (I'm not sure about empowering) are:
"Ya Moh Be There" by James Ingram and Michael McDonald
"I'm Free" by Kenny Loggins (Footloose soundtrack)
"Innervision" by System of a Down
"What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong
"As The Rush Comes" by Motorcycle (A chill-out, trip-hop song - not the dance mix, though)
I am really weird, but the song that gives me a burst of strength when I think I have none left (especially when running long distances) is a track from the score of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. It's called "The Battle". I actually had it set as my Power Song on my Nike+ iPod, so when I was feeling particularly low during a training run, I could hit one button and go right to that song. Maybe not "empowering" as some would define it, but it got me through some very long miles.

Evily, if you see this -- I think that's exactly the kind of thing Stephanie was getting at when she started this post! But, "power song" on an ipod?! I've not heard of this but it sounds so cool! How do I do it? I'll try to figure it out.
I haven't heard of many of these songs either, but I also love John Hiatt's "Cry Love"!! Before I discovered cardio coach, U2 and Los Lonely Boys would get me through a run when I was lagging.
