For me, being from Detroit, Vernors Ginger Ale for an upset stomach.

For cleaning, baking soda and white vinegar to clean showers,etc..Vinegar to get rid of clogs in a drain. Baking soda used in cat litter to get rid of bad odor.

For storage, I use wooden clothesline clips instead of the plastic ones cause they last longer than the plastic chip clips.

Well, there's some I don't recall at the moment, what are yours? Alot of them are less expensive and work better than what you find in the stores.

Please share. Thanks.

Those are good ones. I got ginger ale when I was sick as a child. That would be the only time even now I would drink it! For a cold and sore throat, hot tea!

Interesting topic.

For ear infections:

Hot vinegar poured into each ear canal and let sit for a while before covering ear canal with a cotton ball. This is what my mother used for all of our ear infections, and they were gone within two days. I never took any antibiotics for ear infections.

For gas:

A cup of lukewarm tap water with 2-3 teaspoons of baking soda. Stir up as best you can and then chug it (you have to chug it to get it down, because it tastes nothing short of hellish). Within 2-4 hours, all gas is gone.

For a sore throat, a great thing to use is a cup of hot water with lemon and honey. Very simple yet very soothing.

Snorting salt water for a runny nose.

Mint tea and/or ginger for tummy ails.

White vinegar for cleaning out shower heads, the boiling kettle on my distiller, anything with mineral build-up, floors and countertops, toilets, etc., etc.

For a tension headache, often 'trying to enjoy the pain' helps relax tense muscles and it lessens or even goes away.

FOr a sore throat:hot lemonade.

I might have to try that, but what do you mean by "hot" vinegar? (Too hot would cause damage). And cider or white vinegar?(or does it matter). And how much vinegar? I assume a small amount, like a tablespoon?

I just learned how to get rid of fruit flies:

Fill a dish with a half inch of apple cider vinegar and add 2 drops of dish liquid and mix well. Let it sit out for a day or two and the pesky fruit flies will drown in the mixture.

Any old fashioned remedies for a nice old fashioned hangover?

My friends took me out of my 40th birthday last night, and I feel nothing short of hellish today! I feel more like 80 today! But, how could I refuse all those free shots?

Kathryn,

I'm not sure the type matters, but my mother always used cider vinegar. Yes, it was about a teaspoon or so. (She'd warm it up in the microwave and then spoon it into the ear canal.) As far as the temperature, it wasn't HOT hot, just enough to be a few degrees above body temperature. It should feel very warm (but not uncomfortably so) going into your ear.

Hope that helps. :)

Back in the day when I used to drink alot, that night when I came home I always had two tylenol extra strength and a Coke. The next morning, the same thing plus a Big Mac to coat my stomach.

Sure, others have great ideas too.

Heidi- I agree with Jennifer - a big greasy cheeseburger, fries, and a fully loaded soda is what I used to have to do when i was still hungover and needed to go to work (when I worked evenings in a restaurant). The more loaded w/ grease the better- just the thought of it now makes me want to throw up but it does work if you are desperate! Also, even though I hate to admit I did this a few times, typically while on vacation or something- just start drinking again & you'll feel good in no time!

Thank goodness a heavy drinking week for me now it about 5 drinks total and usually less, ah the days of being 21, enjoyed them but so glad I matured... well at least a little! ;-)

I do agree that food does help a lot. I really don't think I could've stomached a greasy burger let alone a drink - ack! A little hair of the dog that bit ya, they say...

Yes, I'm only an occasional drinker myself - I think hangovers are actually a good thing...makes you think twice about overindulging like that again.

Thankfully just rest, fluids, toast, my fluffy robe and my dog were my best friends today. DH even took my boys to their football games and didn't give me a hard time about not going - esp. since I sat at home on the couch watching his Browns win -- which is exactly what he'd wanted to do! Bless his heart, he didn't make the situation worse than it was. I think he saw how miserable I truly was.
