What Is Your Favorite Holiday..Why?

Yeah! I am back in sin city and up and running--my internet was down for two whole weeks, on and off in San Diego, drove me nutty, but I did get alot of writing done...:) Anyway! This time of year I start to get all excited and energetic for some reason, fall is my favorite season, plus the promise of Halloween and Thanksgiving is right around the corner.

So what are everyone's favorite holidays and why? Mine are Thanksgiving and Valentines Day.
Thanksgiving is wonderful with all the yummy food, the smells, the gathering of loved ones without the pressure of the whole "gift giving" drama that Christmas is. Just plain ole' good food, good folks, a chance to relax and let it all hang out. Plus the leftovers are pretty awesome the next day. A truly "thankful time!':) Plus, the cooking disaster stories are so much fun aren't they?

I think of Valentine's day as my 'Christmas" to those I love. Valentine's day is all about showing the person or people who you love a little appreciation, so I give my personal gifts to friends and family at this time. Its a great pick-me-up after the holiday let down, I love valentines day!:7

Of course I love Christmas/Hannakha (I just butchered the spelling-writers are the worst spellers! At least I am) but only for the chance to decorate, listen to the beautiful music, watch the movies and remember the true meaning of the holidays, I hate the whole pressure of gift giving just because we are supposed to, which is why Valentines day is perfect for me!:7

I agree with you -- I also love fall, partly due to the anticipation of all of the fun holidays to come!

My favorite holiday is definitely Christmas. I totally understand your position about the pressure of gift-giving and all of that, but to me that is fun. I am not at all concerned about what I am going to get from others. However, I love love love all of the list making, shopping, wrapping, etc. I also do a lot of baking around Christmas, which is like therapy to me.

I love the Christmas tree and other decorations, the cards, the family get togethers, and all of the rest.

Also, my son is 2 1/2 and for the first time this year, he really understands the concept of Santa Claus and he is SO EXCITED! He is very into making his list, and behaving himself and all of that. It's going to be a very special Christmas at my house this year!!

My vote goes to Halloween! I love to get dressed up with DDs and acting like a kid again. Our house is COVERED in Halloween decorations.

Christmas is another story.....We have TONS of family to buy for. If we spent even just $25/person we'd be spending a terrible amount of money and we just can't afford to do that. So when DD#1's 1st Christmas came around we told our families to not buy us gifts because we aren't buying gifts for them. Oh, did that make waves! We buy for the nephews (becuase that is so much fun) but for the adults we were all just basically exchanging gift cards. Why not just keep our own money?! DH's fam was actually thankful that we stopped bcause they felt a lot of pressure too. My family is still bitter about it, but oh well, you can't please everyone. On C'mas day we stay home in our jammies all day. My mom gets angry we don't some over, but being self-employed, this is about the only day in the whole year that DH actually takes off. We need our own little family time too.

Katie - Collin is going to be a BLAST this year!

My favorite hollidays are definitely Halloween and Christmas!

Halloween because I get see my little ones dress up so cute and walk them around. And I also get to laugh at my DH who also dresses up every year(this year he is going as "mullet man".hes wearing a flannel shirt, tight acid washed jeans with the bottoms "tucked and rolled",LOL) (no offense to those of you who have mullets;-))

I love christmas because I get see my kids get toys they have asked for all year! And to see there faces christmas moring is so exciting!

Tneah-Yeah for the internet!:)

HALLOWEEN!! I love haunted houses and scary movies. I love to still get dressed up. I love the candy of course:9 And i love seeing all the little kids in their costumes.

For me it's definitely Christmas--partly because it is so over the top. I understand people don't like the commercialism and the gift pressure, and I can agree with that, but it's always been such a fun, magical time of year to me. I love buying (or making) gifts, I love wrapping them, and I especially love giving them. I actually don't much like getting them, though, now that I'm an adult. If I want something I have generally already got it for myself (unless it's too expensive in which case it's unlikely anyone else will spring for it either). I have plenty on my Amazon wishlist but again, if I really want that stuff listed I'll get around to getting it for myself eventually.

I also love decorating the tree, Christmas music, advent services at church, and on and on. Also, now that I live near NYC I like to go into Manhattan and see the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and the windows at Macy's, etc.

Man, I'm getting all excited just thinking about it. Must buy some gifts today!

Oh, and like Katie said I like the list making, too. The computer I had last year crashed so I have to make all new spreadsheets for gifts, thank yous, Christmas cards, etc. I go over the top with the list making just like everything else at Christmas.

Most definitely July 4th! I like a holiday that goes out with a bang }( :p

Seriously though, I love summer, camping, hiking, boating, and the like so Memorial Day and the Fourth of July naturally for during happy times for me (not to mention how much I appreciate their historical importance). I loathe winter and the depression that accompanies it and this year I am not really looking forward to Giftmas. Halloween is for kids (unless one is celebrating Samhain I suppose), Valentines Day is a Hallmark holiday (and chocolate and roses do nothing for me). Thanksgiving can be fun....

That's my crabby holiday commentary. The fact is, holidays are none too snappy when family members are sick but I am glad for cheery people who buy Hallmark cards and dress up like Harry Pothead characters. If it weren't for them the world would be a crusty place.

Do you count Halloween as a holiday? It's my favorite. I love the fun of dressing up. You can be whatever you want to be on Halloween. I love the people who get so into decorating their homes for the kids, and the haunted houses.

My 7 year old had been bugging me for 2 weeks to take her to the local Scream Park haunted houses. I didn't want to take her because I didn't think she was old enough, but she insisted she could handle it. After telling her what to expect, and that the "monsters" were really just people dressed up who wanted everyone to have fun and not to hurt them, we were prepared. She had her cocky "you can't scare me" attitude and was psyched. We paid the admission and walked towards the first of the 5 houses. As soon as the first zombie with a chainsaw came up to her...she grabbed my hand, said "I want to go home" and wouldn't go in. I would have tried to talk her into it, except there were tears in her eyes....stupid zombie.

Anyway, we sold our tickets to someone else and left. Maybe in a few more years. I am, however, taking the 2 guys from India to it this week. I really wanted to go in and they don't get to experience Halloween back home. Someday I will visit India, and they will repay the favor.

I'm even worse than Beavs. When I was younger, I loved holidays because I got the day off work. These days, I look forward to my days off so I can workout at my leisure. But on the big holidays, my gym always closes. x( So, my favorite holidays are the little ones when I have off but the gym is open, like Columbus Day. :p I guess I really don't have much holiday spirit?

BIRTHDAYS!!! I'm not sure this is considered a Holiday, but it's my favorite annual 'event' to celebrate. For so many reasons. First, it's a day for the MOM to celebrate that day when SHE was part of a miracle. Birthdays are NOT over-marketed or commercialized like SO MANY of our official holidays are these days!

I LOVE BIRTHDAYS!

I'm going to say Christmas mainly because it's the one season of the year that I'm not that strict on my eating. I kinda save up my food cravings and have them all around Christmas. When you try to eat clean all year around it's nice to go hog wild (and I mean HOG) and enjoy seasonal favorites. Plus my family adopts a needy family every year. I love going shopping and giving the family a Christmas to remember.

Definitely Halloween!!! I love this time of the year - the change of the seasons, turning leaves, etc... I have always loved decorating for Halloween and dressing up. It's so much fun!

I used to enjoy Christmas too, but now with 14 nieces & nephews to buy for and 6 sisters plus brother n' laws etc. etc... it's become a pain. Also, spending Christmas Eve with my family and then jetting off to the other side of the country for Christmas Day with my DH's family is just insane. I still like Christmas, but I'll admit, it's lost a little of the magic it held when I was a child! ;)

Can I pick none? I don't have a favourite holiday. The most I look forward to is a day off (or, in the case of my office at Christmas, a week off).

Valentine's Day

It is the day my husband and I were married and it means the most to me.

I would probably love Thanksgiving and Christmas but I don't care for all of the unneeded stress of presents and meal perfection. I miss the days when we lived out of state and were able to prepare small meals...few gifts...just the two of us. Love my family but hate the stress.

Oh definitely Christmas. There's almost a magic in the air, and most people seem pretty happy (harried and busy, but mostly happy). I love seeing the lights and the kids waiting in line to sit on Santa's lap, the cards we receive from friends and family, and having my whole family together again if only for a day.

I have to pick two--July 4 b/c I'm a silly patriot from the Philly area w/too much education in American history. I love celebrating the birth of the best freakin country in the world!

And Christmas, b/c the season seems to bring out the best in people. Everyone's just a little kinder, more patient, & more generous than the rest of the year. Also b/c it's such a great example of the American paradox: we're incredibly greedy & unbelievably giving at the same time. :p

My DH does not like holidays (he is Jewish and while he respects the holidays, does not observe them, but I like to cook brisket, matzo ball soup to remind him anyway:) )

He says that everyday he wakes up is a holiday.:7 And is thankful everyday. Lovely, but I love the excitement, the smells, the preparation, the, well everything about most holidays!:+

When I worked in an office I would hold the Halloween party for everyone's kids to come and have fun. I decorated the place in a different theme every year, and would dress up, I do not have kids, but would imagine every holiday is more special when you have children.:) I am off to decorate our house in "fall/Halloween" finery today.

I'm sort of with Nancy on this one. I'm not a big holiday person. Maybe I'm just a creature of habit but I don't really LOVE any day where my routine is disrupted.

I guess I enjoy all holidays to some degree, but I would take regular Tuesday over a holiday any day.:)
