What do your DH's do to work out?

FYI

My way of thinking is a short workout is better than no workout
at all. My boyfriend works a lot of overtime sometimes 12 hrs per
day so I don't expect him to work out for an hour that evening.
Your DH can also try a short 10 minute workout for one body part per day and then some abs/core and stretching and be done in 20 minutes.

If your husband will workout to a DVD, he might like Power 90, Power Half hour, or P90 Masters series. They are more masculine than most. There are ALOT of guys on the beachbody site.

My husband won't touch a DVD workout. He workouts out on his own. He lifts heavy weights a few times a week while watching TV (Mad Money LOL!) and he rides his Mt. bike for cardio. He will use the treadmill and the st. bike in the winter.

Since you have some nice cardio machines have you thought about downloading audio guided workouts like iTrain or Cardio Coach? The iTrain's are really cheap--4 or 5 bucks for an individual w/o, so you could try one and if he doesn't like it you haven't invested a ton of money. I just got my elliptical and using the audio coaching makes the time fly by.

My husband has lost 15 pounds and improved his endurance and flexibility with JUI-Jitsu training 2-3 times a week.He use to do a lot of weight lifting and basketball but burned out on it all about 2 years ago.Took up golf last year played 5days a week(walking the course) and this year alot less golf and jui-jitsu since February. He has done a Cathe workout with me but thinks they are too hard(too complex with count changes)He thinks she is an "animal" (it is a compliment). He really enjoys the team aspect of the martial art school and has made great friends.I think men a lot of times enjoy the social aspect of training ,such as team sports and group competitions .He is however very interested in the functional style of training like Tracie Longs TLT workouts.I agree that the P90x series would be a good one for men as long as Tony's personality jived with them.

He loves boxing. I have told him that is something he would stick with. He always talks himself out of it.

Hi,

Have you mentioned the words "erectile disfunction" to him?
Sorry if I am being to personal but isn't that one of the
health risks for diabetics? That might get his attention and get
him to start exercising.

You have my empathy. My DH may be closing in on Type 2 Diabetes. Our doctor told him it's important for him to lose weight. He's good in the summer, because he LOVES to cycle. He has joined several bike touring groups, and they take fun rides that have a variety of different themes. But when it gets cold out, he becomes completely sedentary. x( He has tried joining the gym and doing the Lifecycle and he HATES it.

What's worse is that he's very temperature sensitive, and won't go cycling unless the temperature is warm. Even fall seems to be too cold for him. So, in the end, he's sendentary about 8 months out of the year. It drives me crazy, but it's his life. I don't nag nearly as much as I used to, but it still drives me nuts.

Not a whole lot these days b/c of working full time and law school. We do get to the gym together once a week, though. My husband likes to run on the treadmill w/ me and lift heavy. I try to torture him w/ Cathe's advanced tread w/o periodically ;)

Long work days make it harder. We both fight being tired or just grumpy when we get home. The workout that sounded like such a great idea while we were having coffee in the morning doesn't sound so great when we get home after work.

My husband is doing Power Max and Gym Styles, plus Coremax, also Legs and Glutes. He likes it a lot. The steady state cardio is still something we have to do (30-40 min. sessions), but the weight training adds a new dimension, and, amazingly, he really enjoys doing it. I think it helps a lot to follow a workout like you're taking a class, even if it's a DVD. I think both of us train harder following Cathe routines. The Core Max routines are particularly important for him, along with the stretching, because of back problems. We're working toward an October physical where he might end up in discussion with his physician if the high cholesterol that showed up 10 months ago is still testing in that range. His physician mentioned maybe putting him on cholesterol lowering medication after the October checkup. I'm doing everything in my power to avoid that from happening because the side effects of those drugs make me uncomfortable, and I know that if he can get down 10 pounds to his target range, and I keep cooking healthy, we can make that goal.

We also bike and hike in the summer, and ski in the winter. But I think the gym style workouts are going to need to be part of our daily routine because this New England weather always gives excuses not to go outside and don some Goretex to get a workout in like running or biking on nasty days. Heck I don't want to. I'm trained to get up at 5:00 to get workouts in indoors, but go out in pouring rain or 20 to 40 degree weather to bike or run? I'm not that tough either.

My DH walks. A LOT! He's been known to walk 2-3 miles in the morning and another 2-3 miles in the evening when he can. And he mows the grass every weekend with a non-power-propelled mower (it is power, just not power-propelled). He does loads of yardwork and maintains the pool. Oh, and he cycles, too. If I rollerblade, sometimes he'll come along, but mostly he's tired of that. I guess you can tell he LOVES being outdoors.

He also has 1 15# DB he keeps in the master closet and uses it for lat row, overhead extension, bicep curls, etc while he is waiting for the shower to warm up (nekkid man lifting a DB - now that'll wake you up!). If I leave my BB out in my workout room, he'll occasionally stop in and use it, but mostly his resistance training is that 1 DB and functional fitness. I have tried to get him to do Cathe, but it is pure drudgery for him.

nrich...my H used to run with me and was very active until knee surgery in 1987. He is 49 and out of shape. I was hoping when I got P90X he might join me...no....so I got an Elliptical trainer. He actually got on it last week. Only 5 minutes but that was a start. He seems to like it but just the 5 minutes on resistance 1 got him sore! I truly hope he keeps it up. The key if finding something your DH likes and that can be tough...:)

Since I don't have a DH,(Thank Goodness) my "DW" work-out consist of:

Bowflex
Treadmill
All Cathe
Taebo
Amy Bento
Seasun
Turbo Jam
P90X
Yoga
Belly Dance work-outs (I really like to watch)
She has over 100 DVDs in there.........
Free weights
VKR Tower
Medicine Balls
Big fat rollie balls
I can't walk in that room without tripping!!!

My DH does P90X and rides the recumbant bike. He really enjoys Tony Horton's style and the gym atmosphere of these workouts. When he rides the bike, he either watches tv or plays his PS2. I think the key is for him to find something he enjoys so he will stick with it!
