Well, I decided against the personal trainer

I met w/the guy last night & after talking to him in person it became pretty clear that he doesn't differentiate between men & women. That's a huge red flag for me. And per Laura's advice I asked him for some references from women in my age range. He said he couldn't give them to me b/c they all live in NY. As if my phone doesn't dial outside of NJ. Another red flag.

Combine that w/my inherent suspicion of PTs--I mean no offense to PTs here b/c I know you're all great & I do trust your advice--but after 20 years of going to the gym I've seen & heard some pretty crazy stuff come from PTs so I was already kind of nervous spending the money on one.

After I had this rather uncomfortable conversation I asked another PT--one who I've known for years, watched train others & def. trust--if they had any PTs who specialized in women only, esp. ummm more mature ladies. He said can I tell you the truth? (I love this Q--what does he think I want, lies? :p) I said of course. He said I've watched you train & you have a great routine. You don't need a personal trainer, you have the exercise knowledge, just keep being consistent & push yourself. He did recommend I continue w/the nutrition sessions since this is where I'm completely lacking in knowledge. Boy did I appreciate his honesty! He saved me $1000+. I just have to make sure I don't tell anyone else in the club b/c I don't want to get him in trouble. ;)

He said if I wanted to shake things up a little I could do a few boxing sessions w/him maybe 30 minutes once a week (my gym has an awesome boxing studio). It'd maybe help me tone a little more. But it was just a suggestion w/no pressure at all. It'd be much less expensive & much more fun. :)

Sounds like good advice. Personally, I think you should be the one doing the Personal Training. :)

Wow, how great that the second PT told it to you like it is. Don't you just love people like that? So refreshing!

Good luck with everything, Laura! :D

Well, thanks for the kudos. ;) It is imperative that clients ask for references. People often don't empower themselves and consider PTs "experts". It really depends on the person. I NEVER assume that I'm an expert. Instead, I consider myself a catalyst for change. In this situation, YOU are the catalyst. Well done on sticking up for yourself (and saving a tons of $$$). I can't imagine getting better feedback from folks on this site. I'm so proud of you!!!

Definitely continue to go with those whom you trust. Use your intuition, as it's consistenly been right on.

Laura - Honestly? I never thought you needed to hire a trainer - you clearly KNOW what to do! I never said anything in your earlier post because I don't really know you but I do read your posts and feel like I know you ... I'm impressed by that trainer who told you THE TRUTH!!!

Thanks guys, I'm pround of me too! :) I was pretty impressed by the honest dude as well. So much so that I might do a few sessions of his boxing class so I can knock the other dude on his a$$.

Hmmm I'm thinking next home improvement will be an aerobics floor in my basement.........DARN those things are expensive! But it sure would be nice to have.........;)

You are so sweet! Thank you very much for that!!! And yes, I'm hard core! Think Jillian with a little softer side...but still a bring it attitude.

Duh....dumb a$$ (me) just realized that the original poster might have meant Lauramax instead of me. Geez, I feel like an idiot.

Lauramax DOES have great guns!!! :)

Must be something in the name. ;)

Seriously, if there was a choice betw. me & the buff Laura well, I don't think that's even a choice!

Laura -- you don't need a personal trainer -- you have Cathe! And as far as cardio -- you have Cathe!! Why do you need a personal trainer? As far as nutrition, that's different, but you probably know enough about that to do THAT on your own!

Just my opinion! Julie
