I wanted to post something else about this.

There is scientific rationale behind WW's recommendation to check in with sports specialist (what that means, doctor, trainer, etc. I don't know) if you are earning more than 28 APs. per week.

I excerpted this from an article in the WW Science Center. It's probably verboten to post it, but it seems relevant:

"For weight loss, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends 200-300 minutes or 2000 calories per week. This translates into 60 minutes of daily activity and burning around 300-400 calories per exercise session.2,3

To prevent weight regain, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans relied on a growing body of research to make the recommendation of 60-90 minutes of daily moderate-intensity activity, burning around 400-500 calories per exercise session. This level of activity was also found among those enrolled in the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR). Participants in the Registry, which includes individuals who have lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off for more than a year, report expending over 2,500 calories per week doing physical activity which also translates into burning around 400-500 calories per exercise session. "

So you can see that research supports activity in the 2000-2500 calories burned per week range (or 20-25 APs) for weight loss and maintenance success.

It seems that the WW program is designed to work really well up to around the 20-25 APs per week zone. It does seem that activity above this level causes some metabolic differences (this is me editorializing) that aren't easily resolved simply by eating ones earned APs, based on what we’ve seen on the EMLM thread, where some gals who earn mucho APs have really struggled with losing, even though they are at a caloric deficit.

But it does raise the question why work out so much? If working out less would yield better results, perhaps both in terms of weight loss and eliminating overtraining syndrome, why not ratchet it down a bit?

I understand that folks who train for endurance events can't limit themselves to 3-5 APs earned per workout session, but for the average WWer who's just looking to lose weight and become fitter, it seems that at a certain point, the additional exercise may undermine those goals.

Lisa I totally 100% agree with your post. Sure if someone is training for a marathon or competition then they need a very rigorous workout schedule. But for most people, more exercise is not better and certainly can lead to injury and overtraining. Some people do take things to extremes. Our bodies are very smart and totally compensate when something is off by trying to "protect" itself.

Thank you for your post! I too have had a similar problem. I have been EXTREMELY active for years. I actually am a former NFL Cheerleader. My activity level has always been high. In any event, before starting WW I did on average 5 days of cardio for 50-60 minutes..plus Pilates with a personal trainer for 60 minutes twice a week. For about 6 weeks I hit a plateau. I also cut back on my activity level. I now do about 3 days of Cardio and 2 days of Pilates. I have noticed that I have started to lose again. The prior week where I worked out EVERY DAY at high intensity, I gained. Go figure.

Thanks for all your input. Especially the article.
I have been a die hard exerciser and runner since I was 14. I have always been an overtrainer. My girlfriend who was a trainer used to yell at me all the time to slow down. I am trying yoga and pilates to switch things up.
CPOGGIO, I hardly think my decreased workouts have caused me to flab out in two weeks. I am running 10 miles a week and working out with weights.

Hi everyone!!
Quiet so far this mornign on the boards. Maybe everyone is sleeping in like me. I meant to get up at 6 to do a step workout, but my cold kicked in big time over night, I slept like cr** and my ankle is bothering me again today. So even though I just had a rest day a few days ago, I think I may blow off today's wokrout again. The weird thing is I don't feel all that bad, just not motivated to workout. I've got a ton of office work to do and the weather is lousy outside so it's the perfect day to do it.

Amy - haven't heard any updates on your dad recently, how's he doing?

Corinne - same question for you, how's your mom?

Tracy - oohhh Monday we wont' hear from you at all - you'll be too busy previewing and working up mishmoshes with P90X!!

Jane - That's great news on your car. Bet you can't wait to get it back.

Wow, they got your car fixed up faster than Sears can get my fridge fixed - two and a half weeks and they are telling me the part won't get here until late next week. It's a flippin' $18 part!!!!!!!!! Ok - so I'm a little bit upset about the delay. Deep breath, hershey's chocolate kiss and I'll be fine.

Happy Saturday everyone!!!

Claude

Traci- Thanks for that little bit of insight! How true! That's one of the biggest reasons why I want to find a sports nutritionist to see if I am on the right track or if I need to change stuff up. Claude's right about Monday, but don't forget to come up for air!

Claude- Thanks for asking. Dad's doing fine so far. He started the hormone treatments last week and will stay on them for 4 months. February is when they expect to put the seeds in.

I thought I would NEVER get home this morning! First, a coworker's car wouldn't start, so I jumped it, then I needed to get gas on the way home and got stopped in traffic several times because there was a 5K/10K run going on (in the middle of the roadx( !), then when I got to the last intersection before my subdivision, there were 15 bicyclists taking up THE ENTIRE LANE!!!!!x( x(

I finally got home, checked in with you girls, now I am off to bed, because I have a 13 hr shift tonight with the time change!x(

Later, gaters!

Good morning fellow WWer's...

Traci - interesting article and feedback. I routine earn AP's in the 30's each week because I follow Cathe's rotations. The synergy of the workouts that she complies always works better for me than when I do it myself. I can always use TimeSaver premixes for the workouts called for to rachet it down a notch. We'll see. Right now I'm still losing. Interestingly I was down 2 1/2 pounds yesterday since my Tuesday morning weigh-in here at home and today I was back up 1 1/2 pounds of that. It is not a good thing to step on that scale daily.... my OCD gets the better of me sometimes though. My measurements are what I look at the most and I'm right on track with those. Measurements are what tell you if you are going to get into those pants or not!

Claude - I hope they get your part in soon. Hopefully my Envoy will be done by next week so we can pick it up next Saturday. They say that it will but you never know. I am not relishing the thought of that drive back up there!!

Traci - I also picked up P90X but haven't really done much with it except for Ab Ripper X. I love my Cathe workouts. I got them to supplement my Cathe w/o's. I don't think I want to follow the
rotation.

Amy - we were posting at the same time. Get some rest!!!

Have a great day everyone!

Sorry That I haven't been posting here much! Been busy, and actually whenever I come on Cathe, I always go down the threads and read (Ask Cathe, Open, etc.) and I've been getting really discouraged with how a lot of people are acting (and I've been really happy with all the replys our WWs ppl have been doing, because you have made some great points.) I guess I feel like I'm going thru a enough sh!t in my like that complaining about a darn CD puts a foul taste in my mouth and I immediately log out, but I shouldn't take it on our WW forum, cuz everyone here is just excellent:)! (And we all have different opinions, we just don't slam each other for expressing them!!!:) )

Claude - Thanks so much for asking, I really do appreciate it! She is getting operated on Tuesday, it is a day operation, and we will probably know more after the operation or at her follow-up appointment. But the longer the operation is, the greater the probability that it is cancer. My mom told me the first thing she is going to ask before she is put asleep is What Time is it? and it will be her first question when she wakes up. I told her not too, cuz complications could happen that delay the operation, and it has nothing to do with her having cancer or not, but my mom is stubborn like me, and she will most likely do it, lol. But she just got nominated at her work for being an outstanding employee, and I hope she wins it because she deserves it! And she is very excited about that!

Traci - Thanks for that article, very interesting! I remember a post somewhere about eating less and working out less (really to just get the benefits of exercise) and how they were losing weight faster than doing intense workouts 6 times a week. I believe you have to do what is right for you, and every body is different.

Amy - Have a great sleep. And I am excited about the time change, and extra hour of sleep for me!!! And I have a midterm tomorrow, so it will do me some good,

Taking a day off of exercising today to study, and I wanted to go for a walk later on, but it's raining, so not likely.

Have a great day everyone!!! :)

Corinne

Corinne: GREAT to see you...completely understand about s'staying away"... hoping all is starting to calm a bit.
BIG PRAYERS heading your way for Tuesday...PLEASE drop us a note when she's safely out of surgery. Study Well today

Amy: 13 hr shift....oh my.... I do believe you get mega good samaritan points for yesterday....

Claude: So sorry about cold and ankle....Think maybe your body wants a little TLC???? I too am working in my office...its a disaster area today!

Jane: You are so right about measurements & clothes being the absolute best guide around! Thanks for reminding us all of that one!
With P90X I'm thinkin' of doing Cathe's new circuits as Cardio Only and using BM2 upper lower as tack ons to days I do P90X strength. Who knows.... I have no idea of length on the P90 series so that is definately a factor! I do know that I may as well get my $$ worth out of workouts before time gets less flexible w/ holidays approaching.

I completed my lower/ab mish mosh today.... Clocked right at 2 hours...I feel really good although legs still can use more stretching. Am going to attempt to keep tomorrows cardio at 60 min inc. w/u and stretch....NEW CONCEPT FOR ME! I'm willing to try anything (healthy) to keep the scale moving...

BBL

Traci - wow marathon w/o for you today. I did IMAX3 and I am usually wiped after that one. It felt good though. Tomorrow is MuscleMax thank goodness. I love cardio but with HSTA on Wed, RS on Thurs, KM yesterday, and IMAX3 today, my poor heart needs a break! I am on one of Cathe's Fat Burning Focus rotations though, it is definitely burning!! I'll "rest" tomorrow with MM and then have a 40 minute run with some ab work and stretch work Monday. Tuesday is my rest day and then NOVEMBER NEW DVD ROTATION here I come on Wednesday, can you tell I'm excited!!!!:p

Traci - I don't think I will be able to post on Tuesday, because it will be a crazy day, I am going to work then right to the hospital after, so who knows what time I will be home at, but I will definitely post on Wednesday, and hopefully with some answers, this not knowing business is very frustrating.

Jane - Isn't Imax 3 KILLER! I love that WO. And I read the November rotation and I got so excited to start it. I have no clue when I'll be getting my dvds, but no matter when it is, I will definitely being giving that rotation a try!!! Let me know how it works for you:) !

Sandra - I read somewhere about CK Sales, and how it is good for us Canucks... this might be a stupid question, but what is it and what are the benefits??? If you don't mind me asking. I am relatively new to Cathe (my first purchase was the hardcore series). I never saw anything about CK Sales, so I am just wondering. And I completely understand your disappointment, I hope they clarify things to let you know if you are getting the gift or not. And all this business on who deserves it or not is just silly (my opinion only). Hope you get your DVDs soon!!! The darn border can be so annoying sometimes, lol!

I hate the class I am studying for, it's Management Information Systems, smtg I will never really use (well atleast I hope not, lol). I hate classes that are included in your program that you must take even though it has nothing to do with you major. Anyways, I was really thinking about dropping it, because with my mom, work, the excitment of the new DVDs (I know, pathetic), etc. I have been really having troubles concentrating. Well, I can drop it without it affecting my grade, but I won't get my money back. So that means throwing out around 500$$ away ... and then I thought of all the Cathe DVDs I can buy with that, and how I can even go sky diving again, so I shut myself up and got my a$$ back to studying. Cathe even helps me to stay concentrated at school, lol, gotta love her! :) :)

Corinne - let us know how your mom does...I'm be thinking about you on Tuesday. IMAX3 is definitely a tough one. I remember when I couldn't make it through it and then when I finally was able to make it through it and felt like I was going to keel over! LOL..... I can do it without modifications, even all those plie jacks but boy is the heart pounding and the sweat pouring and flying. Good luck studying. I know that is tough when you have other things going on.

I am excited about starting the Nov rotation. I probably need it after tonight. We went to Fox's Fish Camp... I did get my flounder dry broiled but I ate WAY TOO MANY hushpuppies and I ate onion rings!!! I can feel my rear end expanding already!!! I have the flex points to handle it but it is going to take a chunk of them.

ETA - I just ran up my points for that fabulous high-fat meal!!! I used 29 flex points!! Oh brother they add up fast! I went over one flex point so I have to stay OP for the next three days. I am still only eating 4 AP's a day and still starting with 20 pts instead of the 24 for maintenance so I do have a little wiggle room... if I ate like this every day, there'd not be any wiggle room in my pants!!!

Hi, everyone - Just read everyone's posts.

It's been a crazy two days. Yesterday did 45 min TM and Push/Pull. Today I was toast - taking a rest day.

Eating has been terrible - work banquets the last two days. Will have to get it back on track this next week.

Can't wait for the new workouts!!! I pre-ordered at the end of August, so I haven't seen anything in the way of a shipping confirmation yet....

Traci, thanks for the articles from WW (that was you who posted, correct?)

Corrine, good luck on Tuesday -

Claude, terrible news about your cold. I hope you're feeling better.
Have a great night, everyone!
Cheryl

Hi girls!

I've missed you!! Life has been so hectic lately, and I haven't had time to check in, but I'm still reading your posts and of course, getting MUCHO inspiration from all of you :).

Traci: thanks for posting that thread! I feel kind of validated in my theory that WW is geared towards those who do mostly moderate activity, and that beyond a certain points, simply eating one's earned AP isn't quite enough. Makes me feel better!! I am going to slow down a bit now that training is over, but I still want to be pretty active (50-70 min of working out 5 days a week, + 90 min of yoga 1 day a week), so I'll have to see what my nutritionist comes back with as far as whether I'm eating enough calories on the 20 points/day (+ AP, + flexies).

Btw, if you are interested in sports nutrition, check out this site: www.drclydewilson.com. This is the nutritionist who came to one of our track workouts and told us that if we didn't get enough salt, our bodies wouldn't be able to absorb the water we were drinking, and we'd pee too frequently. He's a little hardcore (I don't think he believes in cheating at all LOL), but his principles are sound, and I have teammates who followed his program to a T and saw such a huge difference in their performance.

Jennifer

Hey, Jennifer- Welcome back! Thanks for the site, I will have to check it out!

Jane- All I know that my losing came to a screeching halt as soon as I found Cathe last May/June! I am glad that it's working for you, but I am in search of my "perfect" combination still! I totally know what you mean, though about the scale vs the measurements!

Corinne- Great to see you, girl! I am hoping and praying that your mom's surgery goes well and without problems!!! I understand what you mean about some of the other forums and it frustrates me as well. I guess that maybe our long hauls with weight loss has given us all a new perspective and patience in other aspects of our lives!!

Traci- You WonderWoman, you!!! I hope that you can feel "fulfilled" with your piddley little 60 min workout tomorrow!!;-)

Everyone else, I missed, I hope that you all have a great weekend and don't forget to turn the clocks back!!!
