Weight training for triathletes.................

Hi Cathe,
I'm planning on doing a half ironman late this summer and with all of the cardio my plan has I'll only be able to use your strength videos and coremax and stretchmax.
My question is, right now I'm going heavy and trying to build muscle. Feb 12 is when I start training for the triathlon. According to my books, once I start this training my weights should go lighter and more reps, which is fine, but I was hoping to include bootcamp and the HSTA and the HSC. Can those be considered my weight training or is there not enough reps and they're more considered stamina? I use the same weights you do.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Amy.

I work for a company that has a lot of triathletes (in fact our president just recently qualified for next year's big race in Hawaii!). If you want, I could ask them if circuit training will be okay to do as your weight work. I see them at the gym all the time, so it would be no trouble at all to find out.

Wow!!! Thanks Shelbygirl!! That would be great:7 !
I did 3 sprints last year and because that's the shortest distance for tri's I didn't bother too much with worrying about which to do, but the half is so much longer I want to make sure I'm doing everything right to prepare for it. I really appericate you inquiring for me. Thanks again!!!!

I probably won't see them again until mid next week, so I'll get back to you with their answers then.

Happy New Year,
Shelbygirl

Hi Amy! How exciting that you're going to do a half ironman! Which race are you doing? I've been a triathlete for 5 years and have done 27 triathlons with 5 of them half ironmans and 1 full ironman. I'm going to attempt to qualify for the half ironman championship in 2006 or 2007, yikes!! I thought I'd share with you what has been my experience with weight training during triathlon season. I use mostly Cathe videos too. I also focus on heavy weights during the winter/off-season, right now I'm doing Slow & Heavy, Gym Style, PS series. During the first part of the pre-season I can still handle heavier workouts but break out the body parts so they are shorter workouts if I find I'm short on time. I also switch to her other strength workouts such as MIS, CTX, TS, etc. But I find that once I'm into hardcore triathlon training especially for the longer distance events I gravitate toward circuit workouts like bootcamp, HSTA, HSC, etc. and do just fine with them. In fact I think those workouts are great esp. for preseason because of the plyometric and speed/power focus that are in those workouts. For the half ironman distance something that has worked pretty well is to do one upper body part per day and legs maybe once per week (mid-week), heavier on the upper body but have to go lighter on the legs. The only time that I gave up the weight work completely is when I was training for the full ironman because I just didn't have time to get it all in. But I would never do that again because I felt I lost too much muscle mass especially given all the cardio training I was doing. I did the ironman in Sept. 2004 and it has wreaked havoc on my metabolism ever since then (my age probably has something to do with it too...I'm 43)....so not sure I'll ever do a full ironman again! Anyway, that has been my experience, please feel free to email me if you'd like, would love to chat with you!
