Water retention . . .

I thought I once read a post on this subject but I can't find it anywhere so I'm hoping someone wouldn't mind answering this question once again . . . it had something to do with when you first start using weights that your muscles will swell and retain water so you may not see weight loss or loss of inches right away. My questions . . . do I remember this correctly? How long does the initial water gain/retention last? Does it happen every time you change a rotation or up your weights or just when you very first start w/ weights? I started the Pure Strength series about 2 weeks ago after an unfortunate long bout of laziness and don't want to get discouraged if this is the case. Thanks!!
 
I can only speak for myself, but everytime I start a new heavy lifting rotation I retain water for up to a week. It doesn't seem to happen with endurance based rotations, but PS Series and S&H in particular will cause me to experience a temporary fluid gain. I assume it's my muscles holding fluid? The last time it happened it took 6 days before it went away.
Hopefully someone with a "real" explanation will chime in for you! :)
