Wall Squats

Hi Cathe,

I did week one legs on Saturday and have a question about the wall squats. Just an aside, my legs were very sore for two full days after doing this workout! Yippee! I knew I was in trouble when they were already getting stiff that evening. :) Anyway, the wall squats where you go down and pick up the weights, I really had a hard time with this, I couldn't get to the weights without either stooping my shoulders over or bending my knees to an extreme angle which hurt them. Any ideas?

Thanks so much!!!

Steph

I had that problem too, and a few others around here....I think the consensus (is that spelled right? ;-) ) is that we needed to stand our feet farther out straight away from the wall. I'm doing legs again on Friday and plan to try that.

I am hoping that Cathe will do an instructional vidoe on Cathe TV to show some tips and proper form for this move. I posted the ?/suggestion on the Ask Cathe forum this morning.

I have been using Kettlebells for these wall squats. I, also, had a hard time getting all the way down with proper form. The KB's were the perfect height to execute proper form. I hope this helps.

If you do not have kettlebells, someone else posted that they just put the dumbbells upright in order to pick them up.

Putting your feet out from the wall and ball does help a lot. Although I haven't been able to still do the exercise. I'm looking forward in conquering that some day.

I plan to hold the dumbells (or maybe a kettlebell) and NOT go all the way down to put them down and pick them up (my knees would appreciate it, I think).

Another solution would be to do this with your step platform on one side, your High Step topper on the other, with the weights on them, bringing them up 4" higher than floor level, then you wouldn't have to go down so far (and could add risers as needed).

Thank you

Thank you for the good ideas. I think I will try either putting the weights up on end or putting them on top of something. That seems like it would work. My other problem is that the "wall" I'm using is just the studs that are holding up the paneling that the people who owned our house before us put up to divide the basement into rooms. The only place there are two together also happens to be right where there is a big water pipe only three feet away. :-(

Thanks again for the ideas!

Steph

I was hoping others were having this problem. I ended up doing the exercise by just holding the dumbbells.

The first time I did this I held the dumbbells. The second time I stood my dumbbells on end; however I had the feel of the move more the second time so it didn't feel quite as hard. With that said, I still don't think I can go all the way down like Cathe does - not yet anyway.
