Walking

Oh yes, absolutley! Especially if you keep things varied by including lots of hill work, that will definitely work the hips and butt. If you have no hills in your area, speed walk the bleachers repeatedly and/or get on a treadmill and jack up the incline for "hill work" intervals.

I just spent 12 days hiking and backpacking in Glacier national Park, hiking trails up to passes and down through the other side. I dropped 10 pounds and ate really well. My legs and butt got lean and my whole body worked like some well-oiled machine. People seriously underestimate walking, power walking and hiking.

I am in total agreement with Clare. I think that people do underestimate walking and hiking. I have been a runner for decades, but decided to incorporate power walking (with hillwork) into my cardio program. The day after my first power/hill workout, I was so sore! I was shocked because I am in great shape. Like a lot of other runners, I thought walking/hiking was not truly "athletic" enough for me; I was very wrong. BTW~ although I have a pancake-butt, it has definately been lifted and is rock-hard from all those hills. I'm a believer ;-)

hahhaha you could say I hiked, My dog had me going in differant directions as I walked, my hips ached when I got home, now today I am so sore and stiff, I really need to do that again LOL, I think my dog needed it also, he is out of shape also, he came home and layed himself down on the airconditioner vent LOL I really loved walking, would do that today but I am going to give the behind a break LOL

Walking definitely works the whole back side (glutes, hamstrings, calves). If you focus on pushing off with your back foot, it can add to that effect. And as others have said, walking uphill really works the glutes.

I've been doing "power walking" for about 4 weeks now, an hour a day most days of the week, between 4 and 4.3 mph, and my butt usually feels it.
