Valerie Waters AHB dvd set

I actually think it was the negative reviews that helped me like the program - kind of like when you go to a movie with low expectaions and you leave finding you actually enjoyed it.

Maria,

You are so right! A lot of people get upset by negative reviews but they tell me exactly what I need to know. I know what I can tolerate and what I can't.
Lets face it, we are watching these workouts over and over. I want something that I'm going to enjoy, something I look forward to doing. The workouts I enjoy the most keep me in the gym. I have some workouts that excite me so much I wake up thinking how I can't wait to workout!:D:D

Well, I've actually only done the Build Circuit of the DVDs so far as I don't lift again until tomorrow (and I might have to actually take a forced rest day due to my work schedule and doct appt, etc). Maybe I'll feel the same way about the pace when I do Burn or Sculpt......so I guess I shall see.

I guess I just feel a little bad or guilty maybe cuz I started so much "buzz" when these were first announced cuz I really liked Val's paper workouts and her blog workouts and then when I see people unhappy, I worry.........or something like that.

I don't think you should feel bad at all!!! There are quite a few women who are thrilled with this series and are willing to look past the flaws. I think the circuits are great! I love all the sliding moves and I loved the alligator walk!

Those that kept their AHB, what have been your impressions on the program? Are they keepers or are you sending them back?

So far I am keeping mine. I finished my first week of AHB on Tuesday, yesterday was a rest day and I do Build 1 again tonight. I am enjoying these workouts. I like Sculpt 1 the least so far - I hear it is the only one that moves too fast - even from the Phase 2 workouts. I may have to do this one off the paper workouts. I had DOMS from Build 1 for three days. It will be interesting to see what it does for me tonight. And I really got a good cardio effect from Burn 1. I am tempted to try out the Phase 2 workouts but really want to follow the rotation as is. But I think I will hold out since I most likely will be keeping the workouts. The negatives (flaws, pace, form) haven't weighed out the positives for me (enjoying the workouts, valslide exercises, motivating, no dread factor - except maybe Sculpt 1 but I won't no for sure until I do it a second time). Hope this helps.

I've done Build 1 and Burn 1 so far (and am about to do Sculpt 1--if I can ever tear myself from the computer this morning :p) and I really love these workouts. They were exactly what I expected in terms of intensity, production quality, and enjoyment factor, so I think that's why I wasn't disappointed when I previewed them, and eventually did them.

I think there is something about these types of circuit workouts (ones that are entirely built on strength exercises, vs. ones that mix cardio exercises with strength ones) that click with me. And something about Valerie's choice of exercises and sequencing works for me and makes it fun. I not only get the results, but I have fun as well (which is probably why I get the results--because I am consistent about doing them and there's no dread factor).

I also feel that for years I was trying to push myself with advanced workouts, thinking the more intense, the heavier, etc., the better. But in reality, moderate workouts with moderate weights is what works better for me--and more importantly, what I like. So when I finally gave up the idea that I have to do something like STS or else I'm just wasting my time, when I gave myself "permission" to do lighter weights that still challenged me, that's when I started seeing and feeling results.

I'm definitely happy with my purchase!

How facinating, . . . .thanks to Cynthia for the honest review. I've never actually heard of Valerie, . .but I read through this post with great interest. For me an instructor has to "click" with me, . . . . Cathe has become my standard and it is hard for me to find anyone else equal so I truly rely on honest reviews from other Cathe fans to steer me in the right directions.

I love, love, love Cathe as well and I, too, think of her as the gold standard of instructors! Valerie's VERY different in terms of personality but for me, she's just as appealing. They both seem to be sincere/genuine and want to help women get in the best shape they can. Love that about both of them :).

I've just previewed AHB so far, but I like a lot of the moves.

One thing that really bothers me, though, is that Valerie kind of 'throws away' the last rep of every move. For example, if she's doing bicep curls, she doesn't take the rep all the way to the bottom on the last one, but just kind of drops it. And for overhead presses, instead of making a nice, full up-and-down motion on the last rep, she does the up motion fine, then just kind of slops it on the way down.

I don't know why it bothers me so much , but I find it very annoying.
