Using a barbell

I need some suggestions on how to use the barbell without my neck and shoulders hurting? When I sit the barbell it sits on the bone on my lower neck/shoulders it really hurts after just a few minutes. Is there something I can put on the bar so it is softer? Or is there a certain way to hold it? I love working out with Cathe's DVD's but squats and lunges really hurt my neck:-(
 
My local Academy Sports has the foam barbell 15" pad for only $6. The foam insulation works well too. I got a 6' segment at Home Depot for only $2. For a standard 1" bar I got the 7/8 inch size of insulation and it fits snugly. Both are good but the barbell pad will be a little cushier.
