Upper leg definition

I was wondering if anyone can help me out, I posted a message on 'Ask Cathe' asking how you get that line that seperates the quad and the hamstring. You know when you see a person's leg from the side, they have this awesome line that seperates the leg muscles of the upper leg. Any advice from any users on which exercises I can do to get that line. My thighs are very muscular and defined, but I want that line!!! Any advice is appreciated.

I am not completely sure, but I think some of that may be genetics. Of course along with being really lean. It sounds like you may already be lean with muscular thighs. I was looking at my brothers legs the other day and he has that line- doesn't even workout except to walk!! I guess he got the good genes :+ . Sorry, I guess I am not much help.

Thanks for the feedback. It is strange that you see that line on your brother's legs, because I see it often on womens legs and hardly ever on a man's legs. You know, look at Denise Austin's legs, she has that separation between the quad and hamstring. Thanks for your feedback, I guess being lean may have something to do with it.

I also think that it's something that someone can only see when you're moving. I've noticed that with a bunch of my muscles- I don't think I have them, and then I catch sight of myself in the mirror doing something else (like reaching for the toothpaste! I love it!) and I can suddenly see a muscle.

I am on a rotation that I hope will help do just that for my legs. I may sacrifice some upperbody muscle to get there, but if I do, I will be build it back up later. I can send you the rotation if you send me your email address.

Hey Robin--I just posted a reply on the Ask Cathe forum. I noticed you go to a gym, so you've got lots of options. I posted what I thought would be the most effective, but if you want other ideas shoot me a PL.

Maybe it's good genes. ;-) I haven't been able to do squats and lunges for almost 4 months due to an injury, but I have been using PLB and GSL floor work a lot lately. I also haven't been running and doing my cardio DVDs either. Just walking on an inclined treadmill and the elliptical. I have that line you're referring to. How's your diet? I've made big changes there too.

I don't know if I've helped at all. Good luck getting your results.

ETA: Oh yeah, I've been using Bryan Kest Power Yoga a lot more since I got hurt.

I'm getting a very faint version of that (in certain angles, under certain light!). I think it's just a combo of muscle definition, fat reduction (and having the genetics to have the fat leave that area) and consistency over time. I think maybe functional moves that engage the stabilizing muscles, like 1-legged squats, help as well. The sometimes-faintly-perceptible ;-) demarcation I'm developping (I'm hoping it will continue!) seems to coincide with my doing more of that kind of work, as well as more of Tony Horton's brand of plyo.

I am jealous that you have that line! Anything that you can think of? I have been given some good advice from other users on this forum. I am going to stop using so much weight for my legs, because they are too muscular in front, so I am going to focus on using lighter weight with a lot more reps, this may help, I don't know. You think that yoga has helped with the line? My diet is pretty good, my bodyfat percentage is around 15% overall. Thanks for all of your advice, I appreciate it.

Is this part of the teardrop if you do a search cathe lists a workout for defining it. I hope this is the right info.

No,the 'teardrop'is a muscle on the inner side of the knee.

He really does. I was noticing them the other day. Nice and shapely, but with very little fat. Shave his legs and if you didn't see the rest of him you'd think he was a girl. Don't tell him I said that though:p

Wouldn't it be nice if we could simulate just the lighting we wanted to accent our bodies to look good!!!! I notice this too. Then I go and look in the bathroom mirror and horror show!!

Hi there Robin,

Actually, before I got hurt I was following the Freestyle Method of training for the legs. So, maybe that's where the credit is due. Not sure, since it's been three months (oops, not 4) since I've done that kind of training. If you do a search you'll come up with a ton of info. It's high rep low weight. I really liked following that type of training. I definitely saw results. ****Beware**** Make sure you do lots of stretching if you go this route. My tight muscles may have contributed to my injury. It's just a hunch. Give it a try. Maybe it's time to shake things up a bit. :) I was also incorporating the Slim Series by Beachbody. It's not great for upper body, IMHO, but I did like using it for leg workouts. Again, it's the high rep low weight philosophy. I love Bryan Kest Power Yoga. I definitely feel worked out when I finish his practice and stretched. Good luck. Let us know what you decide to do.

What about any exercises in the gym or yoga/pilates that you have done where you have noticed that line more? Any thoughts? Thanks for your input.
