Upper Body Workouts Like PUB?

Beth-B-Fit

Hi all!

Anyone have any suggestions for upper body workouts that are similar in style to PUB? PUB gives me more DOMS than any other upper body workout. I don't know why! Any ideas?

Thanks,

Beth

The thing about PUB is that it involves a large volume of work at a relentless pace in an efficient time period. I don't think Cathe has another upper body workout quite like it.

Producing note-worthy DOMS is one thing. But are you growing with this workout? It's an endurance workout, when done as-is, rather than promoting sustainable strength gains (I speak from personal experience). It's a useful workout to do after a period of time training in a specific manner, just to test how you now do, to see whether you have made strength gains or not.

I think it works best as a strength workout when broken down into either pyramid up or down, taken at a slower pace with less volume of work. This is one way to use the DVD to keep making it useful to you.

I guess I also don't really understand why we should want another workout just like it: PUB already exists, and can be used in different ways, made more flexible in our fitness programs, where the point is to shake things up, have workouts that train us in different ways.

So, getting another workout just like it is less useful to you than getting a workout, say, like the Burn Sets from Xtrain, that is complementary to it and will help promote fitness gains (growth) when used in conjunction with PUB. I would use this as my guideline in choosing new workouts, or even among my old ones, rather than the fact that any given workout produces great DOMS. DOMS are often produced just because the movements are not as familiar to the body as other movements, that's all, and sooner or later, the body will get used to these movements also.

I hope I don't sound too negative, I don't mean to be, just aiming for a different perspective than I think you are going to get from other Cathletes. Anyway, I hope there's something useful to you in this response,

Clare

Do you have "total body trisets" or "slow and heavy". They are different but still offer a challenge. Just a thought.

I love pub/plb and would like more workouts done in this style. I want something updated just for variety. I can't do the same workout over and over. That said, I can do the same style repeatedly with variety in music or with cardio intervals or a mix of upper and lower. Just my preference. Jackie warner has a pyramid style workout but she moves fast and uses lighter weights. Her ab segment gives me major doms.

Thanks for all the ideas. I guess what I really like about PUB is that I like doing upper and lower body splits more than 3 day splits. I tend to use other total body dvds and just break them in half-like PP, SS, MIS, etc. I did just do a week of Slow and Heavy and got great DOMS from that, too. It's just nice that PUB is time efficient and I feel really worked out. I did PP and did 3 sets of the UB and did my own pyramids with them. I was wondering about other instructors and will look at Jackie Warner's.

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions!

I would like to see another pyramid workout--upper and lower body--but done at a slower pace and with maybe different exercises. Not a PUB/PLB part two but a new one. .

I suspect I'm not the only one who has to pause their DVD to change the plates on their BB. I'm not as skilled as Cathe at pulling those BB clamps on and off, and removing/adding plates!

Upper body segments

  • *second vote for upper body premix from Burnset.
  • *There is also an upper body premix from 4ds program.
  • * If you want some negatives high reps challenge, reach of an upper body split premix from CTX program.

No your not the only one, I can't seem to change my weights fast enough. The problem is that my BB clamps do not pull off and on as easily. Putting the weights on and off is fine but those clamps are what get me, so for some of it I just use heavy DB instead.

I also agree that a new pyramid workout would be awesome.

I love PUB. It's an endurance intense strength program.
If you want an intense hypertrophy intense strength program, visit STS disc 19 and 21. The training method is double wave (Similar to pyramid) and it does exhaust muscles:):):)
It's even more challenging than pyramid IMO.

Hi Beth,

I am back on your thread with more suggestion. Have you tried Triset from LIS series? It's an upper and lower body split utilizing the triset training method. Basically you do 3 exercises repeated three times. It is intense. This could bring a variety to your routine if you get to try it. Eventually you will have some DOMS should you be desperate to have some:p:eek:;)

Cathe Friedrich's Total Body Trainiing Tri-Sets workout video exercise dvd

All the best,

I would sub Xtrain Burn Sets. You could change it and make each of the 3 sets progressively heavier or lighter (up the pyramid or down). Uses all dumbbells.

Push Pull - use the premixes (2x or 3x upper body)... great workout that way and you can change your weights up as you go. Only the back rows uses a barbell but you can sub dumbbells.

One awesome workout split into two is Muscle Max... I love to do the upper body by itself. You can do it without the barbell if you'd like, no problem.
