update on lower back pain (long)

I went to the dr today (my primary dr) and he asked tons of questions, did reflexes, had me do other exercise type of things like stretching, pushing and pulling against his hand with my legs, etc. He said they did not have an x-ray tech in the office today but it sounded like sacroilitis (sp). He said I had good strength, good reflexes, no weakness, numbness, etc. He said I could take over the counter pain meds (I told him I didn't want rx meds as the pain wasn't that bad) and he actually got on the little bed the in exam room and showed me different stretching type exercises that are good for that particular area. Other than that, he said keep doing what I'm doing (additional stretching, yoga) and come back in about a week if it isn't any better. He said they would then do more tests (x-rays, MRI) since I already have 2 bulging discs. I asked about my regular exercise and he asked aht all I was doing....and said I could continue as long as it wasn't causing pain but to lay off squats and lunges for awhile. I feel pretty good about it and will follow his advice. Unfortunately, I have PLB scheduled for Thurs. I know floor work will be okay but does anyone have suggestions on anything else I can do to keep from losing any definition in my legs? I'm not sure how long I'll have to stay away from squats and lunges. He didn't mention deadlifts and I haven;t tried any. He also said any work on the stability ball should be okay. What are "your" thoughts?

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is it similar to, worse, or better to have this than an actual disc problem. Does it ever go away completely? I did a seacrh and was reading a post about someone who was told she could no longer do step aerobics due to problems with this joint. That would be very upsetting. ;-) I was under the impression from the doc that it should go away, it just may take somet time, as all back issues do.

when you do go back to working outt listen to your body and keep your back straight shoulders blades squezzed toghter doing your exercises butt sqeezzes are good for your back and buttocks the doctor had my fatherinlaw do but sqeezes for his lower back:)

Hi Kim! I just in the past 2 weeks have been having a tweaky lower back. I read a thread at the Video Fitness forum about a dvd series called "Classical Stretch" I was intrigued and bought the whole body workout and the back pain relief stretch "workout". I did the back pain dvd so far and I REALLY love it (my back loves it too!). My lower back tweaky pain is gone and my back feels stretched and relaxed, which is unusual for me since I have alot of stress in my shoulder blades as far as I can remember. Check it out here http://www.classicalstretch.com/

Good luck with whatever you do!

Thanks for the link to the Classical Stretch DVDs. I just ordered the Back Pain one and I can't wait! I've been having such horrible back and neck pain for months now and I'm really looking forward to this DVD possibly helping!!

I am glad I can pass this along to someone that it will help. My dear friend has been riddled with horrible back pain and I wish I would have known about this dvd before she got so far gone. She is at a point now that she can't even do stretching. Soon as my back got tweaky I sprang into action and luckily that thread on VF was there!

Good luck to both of you!

Hi Kim

I have a condition called sacroiliac joint syndrome and have been battling it for about 5 years. I believe mine is due to running for the last 35 years. From running on uneven surfaces for that long has put an imbalance in my sacrum. Streching does do wonders, but I finally sought a doctors review along with MRI's to rule out any other underlying problems. A great Physical Therapist is a must. She has showed me not only the specific stretches but also stabilization techniqes which are paramount (to stabilize the sacrum). I've also found that Trigger Point Therapy to work wonders. There is a book called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook, which is a self-treatment guide for pain relief, that I could not live without. My condition with the imbalance in the sacrum can sometimes put pressure on the piriformis muscle and also the sacaturberous ligament, which is very painful.

If I were you, I would seriously consider the MRI to find out for sure what you need to do as the next step for treatment. Also, I have orthotic insoles for my running and workout shoes, which when I found my Great Physical Therapist, she had casts made of my feet and had them made for me. I'm still running, but not a much as was in the past (about 22 miles a week compared to 35-40 that when I was younger, I would do consistantly)

Good luck with you problem. I hope you can find some relief.

Have a Great Exercise Day
Dianne

I forgot to add that I also use inversion therapy with an Inversion Table. This has also given me some relief. I guess with all I'm doing to combat this sacrum imbalance that I have; something has got to work. Hopefully.
