Torn meniscus :(

Hi everyone. I have been down and out for the count for awhile now. I hurt my knee (behind the knee cap) in the beginning of September doing a step workout. It didn't seem that bad in the beginning and I could walk on it fine 90% of the time. I cut all activity out except for walking, but then my knee started feeling weak and wobbly. Anyway, I just found out today that I most likely have a partially torn meniscus. Right now I am going to go to PT for 3 weeks or so and see if it gets any better, which it usually does for small tears. If not then it is off to the ortho doc for a consult and possibly surgery.

Yuck! I am so depressed. Anyway, enough feeling sorry for myself. Though you guys can feel sorry for me :D . Does anyone have any experience with a torn meniscus? Also, any thoughts for staying sane while you can't exercise. I am really moody and grumpy now. My poor DH.

TIA,

Karin

Hi Karin,

You and I are in the same boat. I recently had an MRI done that confirmed I have a meniscus tear in the left knee. I have an appointment with a surgeon next week to talk about fixing it.

I'm almost 100% sure that I did mine skiing back in 2005. I went the PT route at first, and while that did help a lot with identifying muscle imbalances and my overall leg/knee strength, I've been experiencing a lot more pain and swelling in my knee over the last 3-4 months. It's possible that I may have done something more to it while playing volleyball at a July 4th party ;( . I'm hoping surgery will fix it.

Karin, My husband has torn his meniscus twice (I don’t remember if it was the same knee or not, but he's had two surgeries). It's really not bad to have it repaired. The pain didn't appear to be that bad. He didn’t take the pain relievers the hospital gave him. It was just less than three weeks after having the repair that he was out jogging again. He just didn’t go too far.

Thanks for the info ladies.

Gayle - I am so sorry to hear you are in the same boat. I hope that your surgery goes well and that you get back to normal quickly.

Karin and Gayle, I hope all goes well for both of you. I'm sure you're recovery will be over before you know it and you'll be back to working out with Cathe again.

I have not experienced that, but I wanted to say that I am sorry. I have been injured multiple times and it just plainly SUCKS! Hang in there and post anytime you want to vent. I am wishing for a healthy and fast recovery for you!

Karin-

I had surgery in Oct. of 2000 for a meniscus tear. My knee didn't get better with therapy. I could hardly do step, run or aerobics. I am so happy I got the surgery. It didn't take long to get back into exercise-slowly the first couple of weeks. After that, everyday I was able to do more and more.

Joanne,

Thanks SOOOOOO much for posting this. I'm currently in the state where you were pre-surgery and it's driving me nuts. I can't believe that I'm actually excited to have it!!

I had both a torn meniscus and a torn ACL. I had surgery about 4 years ago. I healed perfectly and was running within 4 months. I waited too long to have the surgery because I didn't want to take the time off from work. Very happy with the results.

Karin,
Don't worry! My Mom recently had surgery for a torn meniscus and she walked out of the hospital feeling fine. It was such a simple procedure. Just amazing. Absolutely nothing to be afraid of! :D
