Took 2 weeks off and saw positive changes!

I was getting very down on myself because I was working out 6 days a week at high intensity, eating pretty clean and not seeing any changes. I was also exhausted and stressed because of our impending move (waiting, waiting, waiting to find out WHEN!) So a couple weeks ago I decided to take my son and spend a week in the States w/ family while DH was doing business in South Africa. I didn't workout for 2 weeks, ate OK but not stellar (but not bingeing either) and just relaxed the week I was with family. When we got back I had a friend in London for business so spent the weekend and first part of the week with her. I didn't stress about not working out. Got back into my workouts this week and feel pretty good. Most importantly I see changes in my body, and so do other people! My weight hasn't changed much, but my belly is flatter, I am slimmer through my mid-section and upper body and face. I am so pleased!:)

I think I was pushing too hard, beating myself up, and not allowing myself proper rest and recovery. I also think that lowering my stress level and relaxing made a big difference. So now my plan is to workout 5 days a week: 2 days weights/3 days cardio/2 days rest (one day might be active rest like yoga or stretching, one day total rest.) I'm going to keep my workouts to no more than 1 hour. And I'm going to relax about how much I'm working out and just enjoy the process more.

I feel like I had one of Oprah's "lightbulb" moments!:)

hi Stephanie!

Glad you are feeling so positive! I have had the same experience recently when I moved and have relaxed as a result of it as well. I exercise 5/6 days but do not stress if I can't do super intense workouts each time. If I have days where I do alot of yard work (mowing, raking etc.) I usually bag a formal workout all together. I think my body has never looked better. And some others in the house agree }(

Like you, I have come to believe that the intensity level of my workouts AND food stress were doing more harm than good, in the end. Isn't it great to take the pressure off? It makes you enjoy working out so much more.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow - what a ride!’ — Peter Sage

I too have learned that taking some time off is very beneficial and saw results in my muscle growth in taking a week off. I hadn't planned it, I just had a crazy work week and stressed and just let it go.

I think we are all so dedicated that it seems counter intuitive to take time off. Plus, because exercise is a part of our lifestyle, it feels odd not to do it; like not brushing your teeth that day. Still, once you've done it and seen the benefits you're a believer.

This makes perfect sense to me. I think we grossly underestimate the importance of rest. Congratulations on your factastic results!
