Tonsilectomies

I am so tired of having sore tonsils so I was thinking of having them removed after Christmas, I was wondering if anyone else had theirs out as adults? and if so just how painfull?

Hi, Leslie, my sister had hers out when she was older and it was tough.

I cut and pasted this from a q&a session between a doctor and an dult considering the procedure:

The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia. Your mouth is held open and the tonsils are incised and removed from your throat. The surgeon wears a headlight so that they can see. The bleeding is controlled at the time of the surgery using a little electric cautery. At the end of surgery you go to a recovery room, and 3 or 4 hours later you go home. We certainly provide you prescription for analgesic medicines, however, there is little question, particularly for adults, that this is an uncomfortable operation. Some people do fine with Tylenol with codeine, some people require morphine or Demerol. Whereas children typically recover from tonsillectomy in 2 or 3 days, women will usually be uncomfortable for 5-7, and for reasons I do not understand, men are typically uncomfortable for 10, 11 or 12 days. During this time you have a sore throat, and it is important that you drink fluids and maintain your hydration.

I hope this helps!

Hi Leslie,

I had mine taken out when I was about 23 - a while ago - and I can honestly tell you that it was not fun and very painful. I won't go into specific details, suffice it to say that ice cream and jello definately have to glide down your throat and no talking for at least 24 hours and of course pain medication. Over the years so many medical professionals are against tonselectomies since the tonsils functions as a "filter" of sorts. My youngest daughter (now 25) has suffered with her tonsils since she was a baby - high fevers, etc. and is also contemplating having them removed because of constant sore throats and infections. Seek good medical advice before you have them removed.

Take care,

Iris

Well I can't answer for myself but my 11 yr old son had his tonsils and adenoids removed just 2 months ago and he was in extreme pain for 1 1/2 weeks , he was given tylenol with codeine which didn't help and ended up getting dilaud instead ( a morphine deveritive).
The nurse at the hospital told me thay most adults who get this surgery are in more pain than the kids. Good luck

My 17-year-old niece had her tonsils removed last year and it was a very painful recovery. She felt okay the first day or so after the procedure, but then the pain kicked in and she really felt awful.

Her boyfriend had his removed, too, and had the same experience!

My little boy had them taken (including adenoids) out when he was 4 and he was pretty miserable for about a week.

He used to get sick all the time and ever since he had them taken out, he hardly gets sick anymore.

Leslie,

I had mine out at 21. My brother had his out last year at age 44! From what I recall, my throat felt like it was on fire for about a week after the surgery. All they gave me for the pain was plain old Tylenol! I had them out after YEARS of getting strep throat over and over and over (it seemed like I was on antibiotics forever back then!). My tonsils were huge and when I was 21 I went to a doctor who asked "why haven't you had these things removed?". Best thing I've ever had done! :) Haven't had a sore throat (or strep) since! (I'm 43 now). Not sure why my brother had his taken out but he didn't complain about the pain after surgery. I think it had something to do with his snoring and adenoids too.

This is not to say the surgery is without risk. My understanding is that the older you are, the more serious a tonsilectomy can be. Do your research and find a top notch surgeon. Good luck!

I chickened out!! LOL I had a flare up with my tonsils this past week, what is happening is I get these white pockets on them and they hurt for about a week to two weeks and as soon as the white pockets drain they stop hurting and I get about a week to two weeks break from pain. but I am feeling ok now so I changed my mind after hearing all the scary stories LOL. Ok I am a big baby!!!

I don't know if this link will work but basically there is a line in there re-stating what I have always heard, that is, that sore throats are not a good reason to have tonsils removed.
Only if they are enlarged and blocking the airway should they be considered for removal.
I remember growing up that tons of kids had their tonsils removed, like it was part of growing up or something. Kind of like nowadays how everyone is taking Ritalin, most for no reason.
