Those really hard pimples?

Every once in awhile I get one of those really hard pimples on my chin. The kind that really hurt and never really come to a head. How do you guys (those that get them) get rid of these? What causes these? Sometimes it seems like if I hold a super hot rag on it or put alcohol on it (but that just seems to dry the top skin) it helps a little. I tend to have the oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and my cheeks are always dry. I've been using Aveeno ultra-calming cleaner in the am with the lotion during the day and then the skin-brightening scrub in the evening and the ultra-calming cream at night. Been doing this for awhile.

Hi Kimbra -

I get those sometimes when I am really stressed or my hormones are out of wack. First, DON'T touch it. Like you said, it will not come to a head so no use trying to mess with it. Second, I would say stop using the scrub for now while you have the cyst. I would also advise not to use alcohol on it, as it would just dry on the skin and make it worse.

Actually, I treat it just like any other inflammation and that seems to work well. I find rubbing an ice cube on it for a while helps if it is really inflammed. I also take ibuprophen for the inflammation.

As far as preventing them in the future, I would try adding an exfoliant (BHA or AHA) and disinfectent (benzoyl peroxide) to my daily routine. Also, check the ingredients of your night cream to make sure it does not contain oil. Add a weekly clay mask to absorb excess oil, and only use a scrub a couple times a week to prevent irritation. These cyst like zits only really happen to me in times of major stress or when my hormones are messed up, so you might want to consider reducing your stress or adding BC pills to regulate hormones if they are a consistent problem.

Hope this helps.

I had one of those in my bikini area last week, and I think it may be from an ingrown hair. I 'discovered" it in the middle of the night, and it woke me right up...yeowtch!

I would also recomend using a light cleansing scrub in the morning before starting your morning skin routine. Also - do you use toner? Toner is a good way to make sure you get anything that is left over after you wash your makeup off. I have been told that on your chin is where you breakout from hormones. I agree with the others - doing an exfoiliating and clay masks weekly.

Hi Kimbra. I go to the dermatologist , he puts a tiny shot of something in it, and it's gone the next day. Depending on how urgent it is for you to get rid of it, it's an option. I'd had one on my chin for two weeks recently. It really hurt & wasn't going away. After the shot it was gone the next day. Mine are completely hormonal. Good luck! C

The only place I put my night cream is on my cheeks. I'm already on BC pills. Do you have to use the same products in a skin care system? All Olay, or Aveeno? Or can you mix and match? I stopped using masks many years ago because they seemed to dry my face out - mainly my cheeks - too much. Is there any stuff you guys can recommend?

Kimbra

Only use the masks in your t-zone - that is what I do. Use what products work for you. I do not use all of one skin care line. It may take some time to find the right ones for you and you may need to change with the seasons. Also - if you can find a moisturizer that is good for your t-zone (no oil/won't clog pores) you should use it - those areas need to be moisturized as well. Good Luck.

Hi Kimbra

I get those a lot, and I get them everywhere on my face. I do have a facialist who is really good at popping my pimples for me:p I can tell you what she does and what I do:

She uses a needle and poke into the pimple. When there's a hole on the pimple, it is really easy to get it out once you squeeze it. But when you squeeze, you have to go down, pressing your face, not squeezing your skin cuz it'll damage your skin.

I get those mostly when I am stressed. Many people say it's cuz of what you eat too i.e. spicy and fried food, but I don't think that's why I get them. Mainly it's your hormone, so I am sure it has to do with your mood and period.

I also use a hot towel and put it over my face, or you can go to a steam room. That way, it's easier for the pimples to get "riped," and if you want to get it out, steam/ hot air opens your pores, which makes it easier to get it out.

Since I have been using Paula's Choice skin care I have not had one of those kinds of pimples. I have very oily skin and I used to break out on a regular basis. This skin care has cleared me up very nicely!

I agree with Angela -- Paula's Choice skin care products have been very good for me. One in particular that might help with cystic acne is the Beta Hydroxy Lotion (also comes in a gel). BHAs can exfoliate the lining of the pore, helping get rid of the gunk that leads to pimples. Another thing that has helped me -- probably the most -- is Retin-A. I haven't had cystic pimples on my jaw line since I started using it three years ago.

I've wrestled with hormonal cysts for many years, but have found that what works best for me is to take a combination of vitamins that are supposed to help PMS symptoms:

200-400 mg of magnesium/day (bloating)
50-100 mg/day B6 (acne)
400 IU E/day (bloating/breast tenderness)
1200-1500 mg calcium/day (all symptoms)

This combo worked almost instantly for me, although it is supposed to take hold after 2-3 cycles. If you Google PMS and B6, you'll get a bunch of articles on the subject if you're interested in how this works and the hormones it affects.

Good Luck!

(Cetaphil is also an excellent mild cleanser - for me, stopping all other skin products like moisturizers, etc. worked best - things I thought were helping were really causing irritation!)

Don't touch it! A friend of mine (22yrs old) had one on her nose between her eyes about 2 weeks ago and she kept picking at it trying to get it to come to a head. She woke up one morning and her eye was nearly swollen shut. She went to the emergency room and they put her on antibiotics. The next morning both eyes were swollen shut and she was in a great amount of pain. The admitted her to the hospital and had her on an IV antibiotic overnight. They say she just kept pushing the infection back in and with it being on her face they were really concerned about it reaching her lymph nodes and doing more damage.

To make a long story short - she picked her pimple so much she was admitted to the hospital -SO DON'T PICK - YIKES!!!

Definately dont squeeze them. I did last week and it swelled up quite a bit. Love the cold compress idea. I will be trying some of the suggestions above such as retin A.

I apply a hot wet cloth to it and dab some benzoyl peroxide gel and let sit overnight. Almost 6 months ago I had a horrible breakout, along my checks and chin. At 46, my skin looked like a teen in her prime. I didn't have acne as a teen so to have it now was frustrating and depressing. Hormonal acne, which acne around the jaw line is a sign of, is the hardest! I tried everything and nothing worked. I signed up for Curology. It took some time but it works! My routine is this: morning I use either the Dermologica Derma Clay Cleanser with the Daily Microfoliant or use the MD first, rinse and then use the DC. And at least 3 times a week I'll use the DDF Brightening Cleanser. This cleanser has glycolic acid and salicylic acid. Exfoliating is very important to oily skin, but only once the acne is under control. Evening: use the Dermologica Precleanse to remove makeup, which it does. The best I've found without and trace of makeup left. Followed by a benzoyl peroxide cleanser. I use walmalt brand with 10%. No toner is needed as my face is thoroughly clean. Then I use the Curology cream. Now, if I do get a pimple which is around my period it's two at the most, small and turns to a whitehead quickly. FYI, under my makeup I use the DDF glycolic 10% exfoliating oil control gel. It's not drying. On top.of that I'll use a light spf face cream. My favorite is Lancome renergie lift. One of the few firming creams that do not break me out. I get facials monthly, the microdermablation to give a deeper exfoliation and to remove scaring. My face is beautiful! Absolutely acne free! For spot treatment of acne, I've found benzoyl peroxide works better for me than salicylic acid. Glycolic acid works best over lactic acid. Lactic acid is great for delivering moisture to the skin. But since I'm not dry all over, GA is,best in that it removes dead skin, thereby keeping my pores clear and small.

I put toothpaste on zits at night after I remove my makeup. I have very dry skin and rarely get pimples, but most things for zits dry out my skin or irritate it.

I bought a charcoal treatment by dermatologica for my teenage son and it worked magic on his skin - even he noticed after about a week. I'm a bit weird myself though and use polysporin lol! It does have an antibiotic in it so i guess that's why it works :)
