Those of us 40+...

I'm 48. I have found that I need to stretch more (I never use to stretch in my 20's and 30's and now I wish I did). I also cross train, more so in the spring, summer and fall as I like to bike and inline skate.

I'm 41. Will be 42 in April. I too have found that I need to stretch more. I am in the best shape of my life. I exercise more now than I did when I was younger. Didn't pick up weights until age 40. Sorry I didn't do it sooner. I've gotten much stronger and leaner. Do cardio only 3-4 times a week and strength train 3x a week. The only thing I really hate doing is running. I've never really had to diet until a few years ago. Now it's not really a diet but more a lifestyle change. I'm pretty good during the week but fall apart a little on the weekends. Lost about 20 pounds in the last year since I started working out again and changed my diet.

I'll be 51 next month. I've been working out consistently for 20 years, don't feel any decrease in stamina, strength or flexibility. I also don't feel that my motivation is any worse than ever. There were always times when I had to make myself get off the sofa (or off the computer!)

I've done more strength training in the last 5 years, more because I feel it will be better for my bones. I'm at high risk for osteoporosis and I want to do everything I can do prevent it.

I'm fortunate that I've never experienced a serious injury. I haven't really changed my routine as I've gotten older, still do the same amount of high/mixed impact as I always have. I guess I'm a sturdy old lady!

I will be 43 in March, so currently I am 42, I do have to modify more lately due to knee pain and foot problems. I still enjoy exercising and will never give it up. I vary my workouts a lot both with intensity and length so that my body can keep up. I was older, late 30's when I took up weight lifting with Cathe but I had always tried to do some type of aerobics as far back as college and even exercised through 2 of my 3 pregnancies one all the way to 38 weeks.

Otherwise, because I know what a workout entails now from doing them soo often, I often have trouble matching my mood and desire to a workout that will fit my bill for that day. It's not that I don't want to workout but I have either grown tired of what I have or nothing strikes my fancy for a particular day. sigh.

I also used to walk and now I can't (due to weather and foot problems) and I also can't do step much anymore again due to foot problems.

I mostly do kickboxing or modified hi/lo now.

Same here, very frustrating. I've played sports and exercised my entire life, continued through 3 pregnancies. Running is probably the only thing I don't get tired of. I'm 41 very happy with how my body looks. I'm finding that I need to do more stretching and change up the intensity a little more. I'm happy with my cardio and strength endurance.

Doreen,

I am fifty...turned last week. What I have noticed is that to build fitness level is difficult and overtraining is more apparent. I had minor surgery (major to me it was bladder cancer, but nothing was "cut"). I couldn't workout for nearly a month or I had bleeding. Then when I started again, it took quite a bit to get anyway near my routine.

Also I keep things varied now. Two much of anything and I end up with knee, hip, or toe pain. So high impact is no more than once a week.

But the biggest issue for my fitness level now...is how much I need my sleep. one late nights and I am hindered horribly in my workouts. So much for my all nighters in my twenties, and thirties and going for a run the next day!
