Thinking of those affected by the BRAC

I hope most of you were not impacted by the BRAC being released this morning. I heart goes out to those who have been affected. For those of us who were not affected, let's all let out a sigh of relief. Whew! I work on the Navy base in San Diego and definitely am relieved.

BRAC stands for Base Realignment and Closure. Today, a list of proposed closures of military bases were received by Rumsfeld from the BRAC Commission located in the Pentagon. This list will be forwarded to an independent BRAC Commission which can change them and will submit them to the President in early September. The President has until late September to either approve or reject the list of base closures. More info on the BRAC process is located at http://www.defenselink.mil/brac/

And my suspicion is most of the base closures will be in blue states. Not that I think our current administration is vengeful. Naaahhhhhhh. Couldn't be that. }(

I work for a painting contractor that does mainly government work on navy, army, and air force bases. So in a way it kind of affect my job security. Less bases, less jobs to bid. But it looks like I'm OK for now.

I'm with you 100% Lorrayne! My husband is active duty Navy here in San Diego and we've been concerned for all who are affected. You don't realize how many people lose when bases are closed...and not just the military folks...the surrounding towns and businesses too.

We didn't get too many closures in CA this time...we got a BUNCH ten years ago though. x(

Actually, each party was affected equally.

Lorrayne,

He's on North Island. Obviously not going to be affected there, but we thought maybe ASW base or Miramar might get the boot.

There is the trickle down affect like any company who does with for the Govenment. The affect of closing down these bases will reach out beyond just government employees.

We had base closures in Orlando a few years ago. Luckily it was a slow process so the community didn't feel the sting as sharply as anticipated.

My husbands base is being closed down here in Pa. I've been dreading today as there have been rumors. I tried to keep an open mind but all the rumors were true.

Its really scary, although I know everything will work out. I'm more sad that it might mean we have to relocate and I swore I would never move my kids out of a school district once they were in middle school. I got moved in 7th grade and it was really hard. My daughter has such nice friends, is happy and is on the honor roll. I'm really afraid how it will affect her. She is 13 and in 7th grade.

The good thing is, its not like getting a pink slip saying your out tomorrow. We have time to think about this, look into options and prepare. It could be worse.

Its just so hard to believe everything you hoped for as far as retirement and a job could be altered. Who knows maybe it will turn into a wonderful adventure. I have to have faith in God and he has taken care of us so far.

Fort Knox is on the list to lose 4800 military jobs and gain 1700 civilian employees. My MIL works for the army hospital there and my FIL works for the Gold Vault. I figured it would not close due to the Gold Vault being there, but this will cause some problems in the small area they are from. I'm really glad my MIL will not be losing her job.
