Thin Celebs & Fitness Models

Oh gosh, here goes. I may make some enemies. Please try and keep an open mind. I, too want to look like Cathe and not Jennifer. We ARE on the same side of this issue.

On more than one occassion it has occurred to me that the MAIN thing that separates thin celebreties and fitness models is muscle. Thin celebs are so thin because they don't have fat. Fitness models are just as fat-free (if not more!) only have muscle.

Now which do we REALLY think is harder to acheive? To eat so cleanly or to eat so cleanly, plus get enough protein, and work out hard with increasing resistence?

I am not so sure that the celebs starve themselves, they just have someone prepare healthy meals (as previosly suggested) and they do have admirable self restraint. Fitness models must also eat very healthy and have self restraint, but they must also put all the effort into working out--and not just a little bit a few times a week. And they have to consume all that protein.

But the bottom line is that BOTH celebs and fitness models represent something that is very difficult for the average woman to acheive. And whose physique is actually harder to acheive Cathe's or Jennifer's?

Jeanne

Hi, Jeanne, the thing is, when you are muscular, you burn more calories at rest, so you can automatically eat more than someone who isn't muscular and still remain slim.

Some of the celebs are naturally thin. Lara Flynn Boyle is a good example. Some use restrictive diets. If you remember Jennifer used to be more voluptuous. Still, it's your genes. Cathe is muscular and has developed that amazing physique through her career as my favorite fitness guru. I'll bet Jennifer finds it more difficult since she's on a hi protein low/ carb diet and it's not her "natural" bod. I remember she once commented on being Greek, having breaasts and a butt. She looks pretty "skinny" these days. I'll bet Cathe would be slim and toned even if she did not work out as much as she does in her capacity of fitness expert.

After I posted, I realized that someone would bring up the "more muscle = more calories burned" aspect. Still, I think that fitness models as fat-free as Cathe is are eating extra protein or an extra potato, not the extra stuff that tempts the average woman. Or maybe they can eat a LITTLE bit more dessert than the thin celebs. An edditional 15 pounds of muscle is only going to burn an extra 150 caloires (1 pd. muscle = 10 additional calories) a day if memory servie me correct.

My real point, and I still maintain it, is that fitness models, while healthy are gorgeous are still not realistic or easily attainable figures for most women. I still try, but I also try not to let myself get down when I have trouble looking like them!

Don't let yourself get down!

PLEASE don't compare yourself to others! Focus on your own personal goals - whether it be finishing Interval Max without modifications, doing 20 full pushups, achieving more muscle tone, or whatever.

Also realize that everyone has their own "best body" and that is what you should focus on trying to achieve - not the physique of some celebrity or fitness model.

RE: Don't let yourself get down!

I missed your point but I agree with you actually. Both groups tend to be more naturally lean than the "average" woman. I would personally rather look like Cathe and I also think she has the edge as far as keeping her physique.

RE: Don't let yourself get down!

My main point is not to compare yourself to others! I am 5'6" with a long torso, short legs, and a muscular build. I will NEVER look like a 6' super model so why even try?

The good thing is that I prefer a muscular, fit physique anyway over someone who looks like a stiff breeze would blow them over. Plus, I need energy and muscle to keep up with my 2 kids and working full-time, volunteering at church, etc. I heard on the radio yesterday (so take this with a grain of salt) that Lara Flynn Boyle says she never exercises and some days she stays in bed all day. Who would want a life like that? Not me! Even if she does make a ton of money, I wouldn't switch places with her in a million years.

The funny thing is, I started working out to lose weight and look good but I guess it's all changed for me now and I realize the fitness benefit I get from exercising is much more important than how it makes me look. Sure I'd like to improve my body.

I'm sure we all have flaws we'd like to change but you have to be realistic with your goals and don't compare yourself to others.

RE: Don't let yourself get down!

I hope I didn't come across too strongly. I know you said you agree with me. I just feel very strongly about this topic (obviously).

Actually, it's about 27 calories a day. So 15 pounds of muscle wuld burn 405 extra calories daily. That's like a pound of fat burned every 8 or 9 days.

RE: Don't let yourself get down!

I think one thing we need to remember, is that both celebrities and fitness professionals by necessity have to put a major focus on their appearance. My guess is most of the fitness professionals who have gained celebrity status (like our Cathe and others) have done so partly because their genetic makeup causes them to look like they do, but also because they work out a lot more than any of us have time to do. It's their job and livelihood. Cathe probably knows that when she sheds the few extra pounds for her videos, and she looks great, she's an inspiration to those of us doing her videos, so she goes the extra mile to do this. But most of us simply don't have the time (or the genetic makeup) to look like her. My guess is that if I taught a couple of classes a day and did some personal exercise to boot, I'd be a whole lot leaner than I am, but I feel very fortunate though, with what I do, to get the hour in, and think I do pretty well given time constraints. I know that I'll never look like Cathe cause I just don't have the time to achieve that level of fitness. I am however, grateful to her to make such quality workouts, that I can maintain a very good level of fitness for overall health and well-being, with healthy weight control. That's the important thing for me.

I don't know if this makes sense, but just a point of view that helps me stay realistic in what my goals are and should be.

Cheers!
Colia

Right and I have read that taking in a mere EXTRA 100 calories per day can add up to a 10 pound weight gain per year so even if it were 150, it's still beneficial.

Shakeubooty, I am 5'7' and have long, long legs and a very short torso and I have have to work hard for muscle. We are about the same height but the opposite composition. I'm 38, healthy, strong and for the most part content with my body. I'd love to have great abs but that happens to be the place my body likes it's fat so....

My husband looks at all the gorgeous models and actresses and always tells my daughters, "she's almost as beautiful as your mother." The way he says it, I believe him! You are always beautiful when looked at through the eyes of someone who love you! Who needs 6 pack abs when you have that?

Also, I think alot of celebs are rather full of themselves and also seem needy "love me, need me, look at me" and let's face it, beauty fades. I see commercials telling me how to look younger than I am and I wonder why I'd want to. I am getting older and that's a part of the whole gig. My oldest child is going to be a teenager soon and I am heading into midlife. I look forward to being forty because I am going to be a forty year old who rocks!

You go, girl! I also want to be a 40 year old who rocks!

I'm 37 and I'm in the best shape of my also - mainly due to Cathe's videos and better nutrition awareness. Sure, there's room for improvement but I don't have hours and hours to workout each day like some celebrities do. Nor do I want that to be my focus in life. That's what great about Cathe's videos - she makes efficient use of your time when working out and is constantly reminding you to challenge yourself when your workout gets too easy or your body no longer responds.

The only regret I have is that I didn't change my attitude years ago! In '99, I trained for the Tucson Marathon and I weighed about 123 which was great. I looked good and my abs were the best they'd been since before the three kiddos came along, but I still had plans to get slimmer!

Now, 7 pounds heavier, I think it'd be great to be 123 again but who has time for 50 miles a week plus weight training? I don't. I know I'll get a little slimmer because I have started to train again after a break but it can't be as intensely as it was then. Also, I love good food and cooking is a source of pleasure as is eating, so that's gonna cost me a couple of lbs! I once weighed 100 pounds and looked like hell and thought it was great! Sick!

I am happy to be just who I am now and I plan on doing Cathe's workouts and running until I am an old poop!

I wonder what kind of workouts Cathe will be designing for us in twenty or thirty years? I love this lifestyle! We'll be the stepping grannys!
