LAST EDITED ON Nov-05-02 AT 04:02PM (Est)[p]Hi All,

The amount of fireworks going off outside at the moment is driving me mad !!!!!!!!!! :-mad My little toddlers are asleep in bed and I don't know how they are sleeping through it ? I don't know why we (the UK) celebrate with fireworks when the gunpowder plot was foiled all those hundreds of years ago...GRRR !

Anna (who is cross, and has a thumping headache)

Hey Anna,

I'm sorry, pardon my ignorance, but can you explain what is happening there? Sounds really interesting.

dmd

Hi dmd,

It is Guy Fawkes night ('Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gun powder, treason and plot !' Old English rhyme !) and the residents of the UK go mad letting off fireworks on the 5th of November every year, and an effigy of Guy Fawkes is made and burned on bonfires - quite gruesome, I know ! There is normally a traditional Bonfire party where we eat sausages and baked potatoes to keep us warm as it is always freezing cold. And we have Bonfire Toffee as a sweet treat (which is very more-ish !).
Basically, in the 1700's (which is also known as the 16th centrury, I think), Guy Fawkes hatched a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament with barrels of gun powder, and luckily his plan was foiled, he was captured and charged with treason, and I think burnt at the stake for his sins. So, he didn't actually follow through his plan, but every year it is celebrated in England, which I find very odd ? And I am pretty sure his plan was to blow up the Houses of Parliament on the 5th November. And so we remember it, hence the racket outside !!!! :-rollen

BTW, dmd, I am soooooooo impressed you sing with a Big Band (Green with envy !) :-wow It must be amazing ! When you are on stage, do you feel like you go back in time, as if you are transported back to the 1940s ? (Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but I just LOVE anything to do with the 1940s). And please, can I ask, do you sing these particular songs on stage,
'Indian Summer' & 'Ciribiribin' ? - they are my FAVOURITES ! In fact, Debbie H mentioned that you had done a CD with your Big Band, do you have a web site ? As you can see, I am a HUGE Big Band music fan. If I had lived in the 1940s, I would loved to have been a WAAF - all those war-time dances ......

Anna :)

Hi Debbie,

Just read your message on the other posting (Annette's posting about 'smugness'), and it ooo, gave me goose bumps reading it, I am so in awe of you Debbie (as you can see I am a real 1940s old romantic). I would love to do that, sing to a Big Band on stage (maybe in my next life !) WOW :-wow !
And you won't believe this, but I grew up very close to North Yorkshire ! I am from Cleveland in the North East of England (the county just above North Yorkshire), and the last place we lived in the North East was Yarm-On-Tees, in North Yorkshire AND my DH and I had our wedding reception at the Scotch Corner Hotel. And I know what you mean about those North Yorkshire dales.....they are beautiful, aren't they ? (The North Yorkshire Dales are famous for the James Herriot stories, 'All Creatures Great and Small'), I am not surprised you were weepy while out running. Did it rain alot while you visited the UK ? It always rains here ! That is why the UK is so green !

It is lovely to meet you Debbie !

Anna

We have had fireworks since last week it is really getting tired I don't remember such a noisy start to November in years. The only thing keeping me going is that it has to stop at midnight its the law thank goodness.

Babs

Hi Babs,

Well, you are very lucky, there are some folks around my neck of the woods that have clearly ignored the midnight curfew ! And yes, the fireworks have been going off around here since Hallowe'en finished ! GRRRRR..... :-mad. Let's hope it pours down at midnight !!!!! Tee-Hee ! :7

Oooo, Babs, if you are still up, Nick Chavez, the hairdresser from America, is on QVC at 11pm tonight - he is very watchable and cute, and does great demonstrations. I am feeling a bit yucky tonight, achey joints, throbbing head, and dizzy spells :-(
:-tired

Take Care

Anna :)

Well all I can say is that I miss Bonfire night a lot!!!!

Fireworks on 4th July just don't cut it with me!

I used to love bonfire night as a child, we had a guy we made out of old clothes stuffed with newspapers, a lovely bonfire, we kids had sparklers by the packet and loved to draw in the sky with them, and I loved and remember the smell of them as they burned in the air. We had a party with jacket spuds, hot soup and then treats and fireworks in our back garden. Loved it.

I was hoping to share this tradition with my girls, but here in Michigan it wouldn't make any sense or be possible. We've just had Halloween which I find dispiriting as kids get greedy and snatch candies from our basket... it's just not the same. Sigh...

Missed your post was going to exercise but didn't its my rest day on Tuesday. Actually we have so many fireworks because its Diwali as well I think we have another week to go (arrrh), I guess people complain a lot more here because thankfully they have obeyed the curfew. Diwali has caused a lot of problems here so the police are very aware that they need to make sure residents don't become too irrate.

At home today with a migraine so I will be posting on and off.

Babs

Oooo, Babs, take care with your migraine - they are not nice are they ? My friend had to take my eldest to school this morning as I feel so yucky - aches, pains, feeling sick, throbbing head and dizziness. I can sympathise, I don't feel great either.

Saw on other forum, your message about medicine balls, thank goodness they are not to bad to manage !

Anna :)

Hope you are feeling better soon

I don't like all the fireworks lately either. Hopefully that's the end of it now. I worry about my cat going out (I hate to force him to stay in). Apart from the noise scaring him, I've heard about nasty people doing horrible things with cats and fireworks (don't want to go into detail!)

Hi Shaz,

I quite agree, it is the pets I feel sorry for, some of those bangers were really loud last night. It frightens animals unnecessarily.

Where abouts in the UK are you ?

Anna :)

I live in Connecticut but it always struck me as funny that a "holiday" would be named after the bad guy. My birthday is November 5th, and I've been an Anglophile my whole life, so since I was very young I knew it was Guy Fawkes day...so I always mention it when people wish me happy birthday. But I still find it odd that the day was named after the bad guy :D

Hello Anna,

Sorry to hear you and Starbuck are not feeling well. I myself woke up with a nasty cold! I am at this moment having a strong espresso and lovely piece of dark chocolate ( good mental health and antioxidants...ahhhh). Trying to romance myself into a run and MIC upper body. Ay Dios miyo, I am not in the mood and must move according to my rotation if I'm gonna fit into the gowns in my closet! There's motivation for ya!

It did not rain while we were in the UK. I was told again and again how unusual it was that the weather was so warm ( 70+ degrees). We brought California with us I guess. I was struck by how much London reminded me of San Fransisco. Overcast, a bit muggy, bustling with allllll kinds of people of different cultures, the gardens, and the FOOD! Never had such great indian and greek food in my life. Once in the country though, there were the cute pubs and meat pies. What a trip for my husband and I. It was the year of our 15th wedding anniversary and my 40th birthday ( both spent in the UK). We may go back someday. I had never left my children for more than a few days prior to this trip, next time we will probably take them.

I do not recognize the songs you listed. I'm not well versed in English music, remember, I grew up singing spanish! We perform allot of Nelson Riddell arrangenment such as those done by Linda Ronstadt and also a ton of Sinatra swing stuff and other old standards. It has been a huge education musically for me. Most of the guys in the band are studio musicians with degrees in music. I on the other hand, do not read a note...a travesty for me since I have to learn so much music all the time and this band really doesn't need to practice like I do. Hence my need for the endorphins and general fitness that come with Cathe's workouts!

I did not start singing until well into my twenties Anna. Honestly, I think that most people can sing. It really is kind of like "acitng" you know, "interpretation". I was a dancer/athlete during my youth and still see myself as a dancer who just happens to sing. I do enjoy it and think everyone should have some music in their lives. What other music do you like? I love to talk about what people listen to to motivate and inspire them. For expample, I listen to Mambos and Salsa music when I run and Jazz when I cook ( LOOOOOve to cook). Lord, this is going on wayyy to long I'm sure I have chased others off this thread by now.

Fun chatting wiht you...feel better okay? And, welcome to the forum. You fit perfectly.

Shaz, Bernard

I've slept the day away and feeling like death not sure what tomorrow will bring.

I remember (and I know I am showing my age) that people would often tell their neighbours that they were having fireworks so that they would keep their pets in. Those times have long gone.

I watched today on the history channel the Gunpowder Plot. It was really good a highly ambitous plan that would have changed world history if it had been successful.

I am just glad its over for another year.

Hi Debbie,

Oooo, what a lovely way to spend your 15th Wedding Anniversary and birthday in the UK :D ! I am glad you enjoyed it here. DH and I visited New York (and the US) for the first time this year, and we loved it. We had a 4 night break, and it was fabulous.
The songs I mentioned I think stem mainly from the Glenn Miller music era, but I love swing too :7 I grew up in a fairly musical house, my Father has played brass instruments since he was a young teenager, and has played in Brass Bands (still does) all his life. My brother plays the violin quite well, and still does, but more as a hobby now. And I have dabbled in Spanish/Classical guitar playing, and had a go at the Clarinet too (but I really wanted to learn the saxophone).
My other music love is Stevie Nicks (as a solo artist and with Fleetwood Mac), in fact I love Fleetwood Mac too. I saw Stevie in concert in the UK way back in 1989 and she was FANTASTIC ! I also love Dusty Springfield, who is sadly no longer with us - her voice blows me away, and I also love Cilla Black's music from the 60s and 70s (other UK posters might not agree with me here !) But actually Cilla is my favourite cooking music, I love singing (?, yelling more like !) along to her - Cilla came from the Liverpudlian/Beatles scene in the early 1960s.
Sorry to hear you have woken up with a cold Debbie, I some times take Echinacea, to help shorten the life of a cold, it seems to work too. My nausea has passed today, but I am still achey and dizzy - my DH thinks I am pregnant (I hope not !), which I am pretty certain I am not - three children under 5 is quite enough for me !

Hope you had a good run !

Anna :)

Oh Babs,

Hope tomorrow is a better day :)
Sending out
<<<<< positive, get well soon, cyber-vibes >>>>> - migraines are nasty things

Hi,

I was just reading through the forum when this post caught my eye. I thought I might post just to let you know I was born in England, Yorkshire. In a small town call Beverley. I came to Canada when I was 18 and have been living here ever since, I'm now 42. I must admit I loved Bonfire night I have great memories plus it's my Brother Birthday.

It's alway interesting to me, to read post's of others that live in the UK or that used to!

Hi Anna, I'm in Littlehampton (home)/Worthing (work) in West Sussex, near Brighton. What about you?

Hi Shaz,

Know your part of Blighty well - I lived in Chichester, between 1990 & 1992, went to the college there (College of Arts, Science & Technology) and did my HND in Beauty Therapy and Salon Management. Lovely area of England.

I am from the North East originally, but now live in Nottinghamshire, just outside of Mansfield, on the outskirts of Sherwood Forrest.

Anna :)
