Hi dmd,
It is Guy Fawkes night ('Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gun powder, treason and plot !' Old English rhyme !) and the residents of the UK go mad letting off fireworks on the 5th of November every year, and an effigy of Guy Fawkes is made and burned on bonfires - quite gruesome, I know ! There is normally a traditional Bonfire party where we eat sausages and baked potatoes to keep us warm as it is always freezing cold. And we have Bonfire Toffee as a sweet treat (which is very more-ish !).
Basically, in the 1700's (which is also known as the 16th centrury, I think), Guy Fawkes hatched a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament with barrels of gun powder, and luckily his plan was foiled, he was captured and charged with treason, and I think burnt at the stake for his sins. So, he didn't actually follow through his plan, but every year it is celebrated in England, which I find very odd ? And I am pretty sure his plan was to blow up the Houses of Parliament on the 5th November. And so we remember it, hence the racket outside !!!! :-rollen
BTW, dmd, I am soooooooo impressed you sing with a Big Band (Green with envy !) :-wow It must be amazing ! When you are on stage, do you feel like you go back in time, as if you are transported back to the 1940s ? (Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but I just LOVE anything to do with the 1940s). And please, can I ask, do you sing these particular songs on stage,
'Indian Summer' & 'Ciribiribin' ? - they are my FAVOURITES ! In fact, Debbie H mentioned that you had done a CD with your Big Band, do you have a web site ? As you can see, I am a HUGE Big Band music fan. If I had lived in the 1940s, I would loved to have been a WAAF - all those war-time dances ......
